CoL Wing and Taggart were on time, and a few minutes afterward the robbers' agent entered with a package. "As I look at my iron field gates," Bays the celebrated English farmer, J. J. Mechi, "iron wire fences, iron sheep I fmrdles, supplied to ine by my friend Barrett, thirty odd years ago, but all perfect now, and when I compare them with the rotten gate posts and other wooden matter of an equal age, I can only wonder that agriculture still runs in (the old wooden rut. Iron tubs and iron ©arrows stand alike heat and cold--no cooperage and carpentering. The posts which support our shed s should, if of wood, have their feet placed within the socket of an iron pipe driven in the ground. I saw this admirably done at the Earl of Essex's, Cassiobui'y, where the lower end of implaned fir poles rested in the f fioeket of iron pipes (5s. each), firmly ' embedded in the soil. Pig troughs and drinking troughs lor animate and poultry appear to be nearly everlasting, while the water in them is always acceptable. We find the large circular pif troughs -«y convenient in the sheep fold, for .eir weight and form prevents their be- g upset by the sheep$ and the water .ost* The temperature of the water is ;teu slightly mised by the heated ifon. I have seen lambs injured by drinking water immediately taken from a spring, at a temperature of about 48 deg., in hot weather. My twelve-iron rick frames (Garrett's patent) are worth as much as .fljey were thirty odd, years ago, when •fiWt put" down--no rat«. BjT the by, this reminds me that my practical friends sarcastically suggested thirty years ago juld ijthat I should want no such frames, for I ii should frii i A it' ild never grow up enough to fill my new great barn. We evidently, on the score of profit, should pass more rapid ly from the old wooden age to that of iron, coal and brick, with steam as a mo- l^tive power. Who would hove thought, forty years ago, of building iron ships Somnambulism Extraordinary. A curious case of somnambulism, says the London Echo, is reported by a cor respondent at Calcutta, of which a khid- mutgar in the employ of his friends is the subject. A little after midnight till nearly 2 o'clock in the morning this man, he says, begins chanting verse after Terse of his Koran and of sacred hymns ; re peats the divine precepts ; criticit-es the shortness of time in this world, and the length of eternity in the next; and, finally, winds up with an unearthly howl or shriek. During all this time lie is in t'nft wnnndfif* nf alnmliprg j\nrl the Only 'I icRKltfe OF TIRtilHIA CI#te Graphic Description of the Conflagration -LOM Estimated at 90,000,000. A correspondent at Virginia City, Ne vada, who witnessed the burning of that town on the 26th of October, gives the following s^phic deeeriptioii o£ ihe con flagration aha tab scenes incident to it : The greatest fire that has ever visited Virginia City has just spent it force, and the whole town from Taylor street north is in ashes. About daylight the alarm was given, the fire having broken out in a private dwelling on A street. A high wind -was blowing at the time, and be fore the department could get at work many buildings were in ruins. With in credible rapidity the fiames spread to B street, and soon it was apparent that the greater part of the city was doomed. The alarm was taken up by all the hoist ing works ia the city, and the shrill notes of steam-whistles and fire-bells, the howling of the wind, and the crackling of the flames made a perfect bedlam of sounds. The engine?: from Gold Hill were brought into service, and every available appliance used to check the fire. Within an hour from the time the first alarm was given, at least twenty dwelling-houses on A street, and the main business portion of E street were burned to the ground. Thp first build ing that succumbed on B street was Mooney's livery stable, a brick building with a wooden roof ; all the horses and carriages had been removed. After leaping across several small frame buildings the fire next took hold of the County Court House, a large three-story brick edifice, in which were oonfined about fifteen prisoners. These were removed to an adjoining building, and subsequently liberated upon their own parole, as under the existing cir cumstances nothing else could be done with them. The east side of B street was soon enveloped in fiames, and the fire was extending northward as fast as a high wind and a succession of wooden hottaes could carry it. The firemen were doing their utmost, but to no avail. People removed their effects into the street only to have them burned before they could be taken to a place of safety. While the fire was thus extending to the business heart of the town, it was also crawling up toward the base of Mount Davidson, destroying in its course the finest family residence in the city. On B street, the International Hotel, a four- kuh'v liiitik. wm« on the and the jcvrclxy liiouiMW.'wij oi Its.. M. -Fred erick, on C street, was smoking, while at the same time the high wind "was car rying cinders as large as one's hand over into the east side of 0 street, and pres ently a frame building in the rear of the Enterprise office was in flames. Thus did the fire approach so quickly from B to C street that business houses in the latter thoroughfare were considered safe until it was too late to save anything Enterpn that the books alone were saved. The office of the Evening Chronicle was with its con tents totally destroyed. The Footlight, published in the same building, was also a total loss. During the burning of these buildings, the lire was making rapid headway northward and eastward, and communication between the ex tremes of the city was cut offl Piper's Opera-House and adjacent buildings on D street were smoking hotly from the roof, and soon burst into a live flame. It was now the most exciting moment of the fire. From the start the fiames seemed to approach directly the Consoli dated Virginia hoisting works and the railroad depot, but now it was certain that unless something extraordinary was done the works and the large sixty-stamp mill must succumb. There were a few intervening buildings that had not yet taken fire, and giant powder was brought into Ui«e to destroy them. Esplosioa after explosion thundered, bat the high wind and the great heat could not be overcome by powdor even, and the roar ing flames marched straight down ES street and to the mines and the mills in their resistless course, sweeping every thing before them, including the hoist ing works and mill of the Consolidated Virginia, the new battery mill of the California, and the hoisting works of the Ophir mine. The Virginia hoisting-shaft abuts on the railroad depot, and northeast from it are the hoisting works of the Ophir and Mexican. The hoisting works of the Consolidated Virginia were, at the time they were erected, the best appoined of any in the world. Attached to them were mechanical shops for every mechan ical department connected with the mine the whole costing from 8300,000 to $400,- 000. The new mill of the Consolidated Virginia was connected with the hoisting works by a frailroad built upon woodwork with trestles, and the fire" dashed oloug, this for several hundred feet, till it reached the mill, which was a lumber- built structure, and therefore fell a rapid prey to the tire. As the progress of the fire became so formidable the miners had been hoisted to tiie surface from every part of the works below, the shafts bulkheaded near the surface, and every precaution taken to save the lives of the men and as much propertv as possible. There is no doubt had the situation been properly taken in at the start, by the use of a few kegs of powder upon buildings that had not yet taken fire, a large portion of the city might have been saved. No correct estimate can yet be made of the losses, though they will probably reach $5,000,000. from them. The Enterprise Building was on fire so soon that the accountant's Reauurkftble Snake Story. A*» an antidote to toe milflktl vampires j fires are kindled in the yard at little child of Gen. Grimes was p; after supper, in the glare of the li when a raddom ww*.«in the ehik tracted the attention of the GeueraL He rushed to the spot in time to rescue the little fellow from the fatal fang of a large rattlesnake, in the coll of attack ready to strike. The snak& glided away in tike darkness, and the General saw serpents of all assortments, sioee and varieties, in playful multitudes, running about in all directions. Some were going under the house, others crawling out. Buch a con vention of reptiles would have alarmed any uui a brave uuu gaiiaui soldier. But tlie situation required attention. So » council of war was held, consisting of the General and an old negro named Ned. Ned said, "I tell you, Masse Bryan, if you will kill a snake or two, and burn em, dem oders will all git from here.'* No sooner said thaw dose; the General and old Ned readily sliMighiered a few, and piled them on the glowing fagots. The smoke and odor commenced ascending and permeating the atmos phere. Boon a head oould be seen here and there protruding from the holms, forked tongues flashing and eyes glitter ing. Then whole bodies appeared, and such a hegira of snakes was never wit nessed before. In a short time "mother earth seemed to have swallowed up her warlike birth." Gen. Grimes has not been troubled with them since.--T&r- boro {N. C.) Southerner. : -- The Sultan as a Ftnancierw i Whatever may be said against the Sul tan, says the New York Graphic, there is no question as to his capacity as a first- class financier. He has swindled the Christian nations which were foolish enough to keep him on his throne by foroe out of $900,000*000. He has sold bonds at a high rate of interest till it is impossible to borrow money to pay the interest any longer, and now he proposes to fund one half the interest for five years, which is a confession of bank ruptcy and the first step toward repudi ation. It is something marvelous, the way this sensual barbarian has succeeded isr gulling the astute financiers of Chris tian Europe of hundreds of millions, and should he ever go out of the govern ing and borrowing business at Constanti- nnnic ho wraM gMskft ft dlglit&l r>or*«<o»* Jay Gould, whose swindling capacities need fertilizing. It must be slightly humiliating, however, to English capital ists to reflect on their facility for being fleeced by foreigners, and semi-barbari ans at that. A large portion of this vast Turkish debt is due to English people, and the refusal of the Sultan to pay, interest has led to something of a panic in London. But the London banks are loaded with Egyptian paper, and_ Mexi can bonds are piled up in stacks with the worthless Venezuelan securities. It is hard to understand why it is that the most practical people in the world, peo ple who are made of solid, matter-of-fact material, are also the most easily de ceived, and have been most tempted to part with their money for wild and im practicable schemes. An Apt Repartee. The frequency with which unreason able complaints concerning the manage ment of public business come to the different departments is very provoking to those officers, says a Washington cor respondent, and some of their replies to these eomplainte are worthy of wits and philosophers. The other day a Post master down South complained of the delay in transportation of mails across the Gulf, and in the body of the com plaint was a voluntary admission that the delay was occasioned by bad weather, The document came to the hands of one of CoL Bangs' assistants, who is noted for his aptness at repartee. He read the papeis over carefally, to be sure he was right then he wrote the follow ing indorsement: "If your ease is as represented within, it should have been referred to Almighty God instead of the Postmaster Geuoral.
