"TT • • ; * ' y*ww":" mvmwww. ji?,w* r LIFE IN 'FRiyCO. f Decidodly the most striking charac teristic of San Francisco is the radical . change constantly going on in its so cial and commercial circles. Yet bow great, rapid and astonishing are the changes wrought in this intense exis tence which we live none can fully un- \ derstjuid except those who reside here.. To me, even familiar as I have been with California life, years, in years ago --lamiliar as I am with it to-day, the , changed and changing condition of the small fraction of the population whom ir w I call my friends, amazes and astounds >; me. I cannot comprehend the myste rious fate that rides through all the de partment of our affairs. Are we, in deed, different from our brothers of the Atlantic elope? Is our career more erratic, more dangerous f Do we move in tangents and not in well defined % circles ? * Before me stand* a man wbo, a few short years ago, worke d as a day laborer in a mine, and to-day he has more dol lars than any other man in the United States, rejoicing in an income of near ly half a million bullion a month-- Yonder is a man trembling on the verge of want and utter destitution, who a few months ago was a millionaire! In this passing gaudy equipage, languidly reclines a woman, robed in the richest fabrics and decked with the rarest jew els, who, five years ago, took in wash ing for a living! And that poor, sad- f&ced and meanly-clad woman to my right, not half a decade hfU9 Since she was a power in, society--the proud wife of a man worth the rever. encc of a kingdom, and who sold all things short In this life, and then sold death short! One can find human wrecks all along our streets--wrecks that have been made so with the sud denness of a thunderbolt! And we can find where fortune has suddenly poured its golden stream into the lap of hard labor and pinching poverty, and the recipients walk .before us now as the ruler8 in the marts of commerce. Men pass us on all sides, anxious and excited huraying on to disaster or defeat, or to •access and victory, as though this day enfolded all their chances of life and, I had almost said, all their hopes in the hereafter. And, mu<$t it be said that women, many young and beautiful'and pure, are found mingling with and tak ing a part in and with the surging throng, as anxious, as determined to brave "fate and the devil" as are their fathers, husband and lovers! Ah, me! As strange is life and its surroundings here as are the genial climate, the na ked hills und t'ie radient Heavens!-- Philadelphia Press. DUNDEE and RICHMOND, Cash Stores of C. F.
