It was found to be in the upper part of Mrs, L. C. Gates' house, and as the smoke was so "dense it was for a time almost impossible to ascertain how much headway it had gained. A ladder was put up to a door in the back part of the house, and P. D. Smith, with his Babcock Fire JSxtinguisher, entered. and in a very few minutes succeeded in extinguishing the tlames. He had done this so i long that he had 'probably come to believe that it was by his eflorts that the trains were stopped. But oa Friday last he made a mistake. The Direct- tors car was pasting this Station at the rate of about forty miles an hour, when old Prince made his usual signal which was disregarded, and he was struck by the cowcatcher, thrown high in the air, and as he aligiited upon the track his tail was cut off clone behind hig ears, aud old Prince was ue more. He was a good naturrd, inoffensive animal, and well known to every man or boy who have visited McHenry for several years back.
