THE stores in / this village were all closed on Old Settlers day, from 12 to 2 •'clock, in order that the employees might have a chance to"Re-Une." OUR baby Nine went to Woodstock •a Saturday last, and played a very flue game of Ball with a small Club of that city, the score standing 9 to 8 in favoi •f Woodstock. THE heads of the young men which have been shorn of their locks and pol- .lished off with horse clipping machines resemble an old fashioned hair trunk after many years of travel. S. K. THE insect tribe is quite active, and the bald-headed man is kept bu4y dis puting the squatter-sovereignty of the house-fly, and when they light en him in buzzing pairs he waxeth wroth. IN a notice last week of a thorough bred Short Horn Bull for sale, by W. W. Ellsworth, we stated he was "three years old " It should have read two years. See notice elsewhere. THE fine showers of the-past few day* Have had a wonderful reviving and re freshing influence upon the vegetable world, giving a mere cheering aspect to the weary, half discouraged tiller v»f the soil. Now at the church festivals the sin gle, strawberry drowned in a quart of watery cream thinks how like he is to the degraded oyster who formerly ruled supreme in an ocean of weak •oup. and almost wishes he had uever been born. QUITE a number of the editorial fra ternity of the District were in McHen ry oil Thursday. G. S. Utter and Dr. S. F. Bennett, of the Richmond iGazette, and J. A. Avery of the Waukegan Pat riot, made our Sanctum a cal), and we saw upon the streets O. A. Patridge, of the Waukegan Gazette, an^A. R. Brad bury, or the Woodstock Democrat. They were all here to help the Old Set tlers "Re-Une." THE Old Settlers Association, and more particulary the citizens of McHen- ry, are under great obligations to Hon. E. M. Mr. Dennis took grea£ pains to bring them from Waukegan for our use, and will please accept tho thanks oAhe Old Settlers aiid eur citizeus generally therefor. THE Woodstock Dramatic Associa tion are now rehearsing and will bring out on Friday evening of this week, at National Hall, Woodstock, the beautir ful Comedy, in Three Acts, of "Caste." With the reputation of this Amateur Association, and the known popularity of the play, we have no doubt they will receive a rousing benefit. They are to be assisted by Mrs. G. rianafoni, of Milwaukee, who novice on the stage. ? CAPT. E. She can accommodate 100 passengers withour crowding. Persons wishing to engage the boat for any special day should address E. Griswold, McIIenry, 111. Lovers of fun can look out for one of the gran dest times ever known in the county. TIIE game of Base Ball on Thursday last, between the "Fox River" Club of this village, and the "Typos'1 of Wauk- Vgan, proved a regular Waterloo for the "Typos,*' the game being won by the "Fox Rivers" by a score of38 to 5. Most of the old members remain in the club and the place of the outgoing ones have been supplied by Mr*. G. It is now a long time since a play was brought out here, and the public may as w ell prepare for a good square laugh. Prominent on the list of old settlers of this part of the county, is the old Saw Mill owned by Mr. Toles, which was built in 1837, which Is still in run- uing order aud capable of doing as good work as when 20 years younger.-- Mr. Toles is now daily engaged iu turn ing out oak, ash and black Walnut lum ber, which looks decidedly old fashion. Our Public School, which for the last two years has been under the charge of J. A. Baldwin, closed on Friday of last week. At the close of thV School he was presented with a picture, which to hi in in after years will uo doubt be one of the choicest of gifts and one which will remind him of many a happy time spent in this place. It was a group of his Scholars. It is seldom that a teach er leaves a School carrying with him the love and respect of the scholars and patrons of the School as does Mr. Bald win. Now "Santa," we find our mistake, we thiuk he had a beard on Iiis face and as we don't want a profeb- sioual gentleman to own that he him self was the Individual, we will play it was us. Thinking the matter over as we write, you remind us of a sports man who took his bow and went into tiie woods shooting. He apied a ring dove among the branches of an oak, and Intended to kill it. He drew the bow to hi* shoulder, and took his aim accordingly, but just as he was going to loose the arrow, an adder, which he had trod upon under the grass, st ung him so painfully in the leg that he was forced to quit hi? design and threw his bow down inapassiun.
