It cer tainly the finest carriage'in this village «nd cost, we learn, #350. COMMISSIONER WENTWORTH IS NOW *t work grading the street running East from the Depot, which when completed will be. a great'improve ment to that locality. He is filling in and raising the street in a manner that will remedy the mud hole that has always been found in that section both Spring and Fall, REMEMBER the Lawn Festival, on the Grounds of D. S. Smith, on Friday eve ning next. The McHenry Cornet Band will be in attendance. THE officers of the McHenry County Agricultural Board have changed the time for holding the next Fair from September to October 2d, 3d. 4th and 5th. This was done so as iiot to inter fere with Fairs held in neighboring counties. BEN GILBERT has been struck., with the spirit of improvement, and is put ting a new wall under a portion of the front of his building. Ben don't make much noise about it. but nevertheless is selling choice Groceries at bottom figures. If you don't believe it call at his store. THE Dancing Public should not for get the Parties to be held at the River^ side and Parkers Hall, in this village, on the evening of the Fourth. The best of music will be in attendance at both pi ace sv and nothing will be left undone to make it pleasant fbr all who attend. ALDERMAN C. B. Curtis, has been treating his residence to a new coat of Paint, which much improves it? ap pearance. The work was done by Cur tis & Wait, who as Painters, Grainers, or anything pertaining to tlieir line have no superiors In the county. Fred Snorr has also been Painting lu and around his residence, which much im proves its appearance. THE Steamer "Athlete" earns ticwu the river on Friday night last, and is now anchored at her old dock, and is ready to make trips to the Lakes with Picnic, Pleasure or Fishing parties at all times. She Is under command of Capt. E. Griswold, with Ira Snyder as Engineer.* Her boiler has been en larged, and she has been repainted and otherwise improved, and presents a very handsome appearance. THE arrangements for the 4th are progressing favorably, and a large gathering and an enjoyable time may be expected. All kinds of Athletic sports will be introduced in the exer cises of the day, such as Base Ball Game, Foot Bacing, Boat Racing. Ac. The Steamer '"Athlete" and "R. They are composed of good material, and although this is their first appearance we have no doubt they will give an entertainment well worthy the patroaage of the public.-- We bespeak for them a rousing bene fit. ED. POTTER, while counting eggs the other day, that frieud Parsons had brought to the store, heard a peep, but from whence came the chipper no one could tell, and the search was finally given up. The next morning as David opened the store door, he very audibly heard the same peep, and on going to the pail he saw protruding through its prison shell the head of a beautiful lit tle chick, who was cared for and is now doing well. Ed says he bhall contract with friend Parsons for his spring chickens hereafter at ten cents per dozen, and raise them hiuicelf.- -llich- mond Gazette. WHILE passing the store of O. W. Oweii, a few days since, we noticed him unloading a new invoice of the celebrated American Sewing Machines, for which he is the Agent in this sec tion, and we do not exagerate when we say the American has gained a popu larity in this county second to no ma chine ever made. The points claimed for it are it has a self-threading shuttle self-setting needle, never breaks the thread, never skip# stitches, is the lightest running, the simplest, the most desirable, and in every respect the best Family Sewing Machine in the market. We adyise our lady friends to examine the New American, as they cannol fail of being pleased with it. THE Algonquin correspondent of the Dundee Record says: Allan Pinkerton's new book, "The Mollie Mnguires" has been received here, and can be bought of Wm. H.Earlle. It has fifty illustra tions arid is very interesting. Eight of the "Moilies" are to be executed to day (Thursday 21st,) in Pennsylvania. They were brought to justice by Allan Pinkerton, after extraordinary detect ive operations among them-, covering a term ot thi ee years, the full and won derful incidents of which are graphic^ ally told in this volume.*^ It is double the size of his former books. Price #2- 50. This is said to be one of the most interesting books yet issued by Pinker- ton, and we have no doubt wi'l meet with a large sale. We trust some Agent will visit this part of the County soon. HAY BAKES! HAY RAKES! The unrivaled Tiger Self Dumping Rake has no equal. A child can oper ate it. Lord, at Riverside Hall, on Friday and Saturday eienfngs of last week, were well attended, and hignly satisfactory to all. In fact everyone who was present are loud In their praise of the manner in which che several pieces brought out were rendered, which proved that Mr. and Mrs. Lonl arefnot only professionals, put stand in rhe front rank. The first evening they gave the Third Act of Othello, with Mrs. Lord as lago, fol lowed by th« Farce of the 'tEuglish- man in Paris," and on the second the thrilling Temperance play of "Saved," followed by the Farce of "Six Months Married," and we have no hesitancy In saying that|in every particular they wire as well rendered as they conld have been with a dozen Actors. Mrs. Lord is a host in herself, and is well supported by her husband. Her magic changes of characters Is truly wonder ful. In any part which she assumes she takes it with that grace and ease that few if any can equal. We hope they will see fit to visit us again at no distant day. "Sidewalks ,. tUl you can't rest." True! A man whom these new side walks cannot tempt to take frequent strolls must be lazy. E. L. Billings, of Chicago, is examin ing the lakes in this vicinity with a view to pisciculture or the establish ment of a fishery. He is now looking at Silver Lake. J. J. Wilson has broken ground for the foundation of a pickle factory. It li to be 100x40, two stories high and situated between tho old factory and the railroad track. First an order from the members of the Board isgiveu to the saloon to dis continue the sale or gift of intoxica ting liquors to M. F. Ellsworth. Presi dent of the Board. Closely following, a request is issued desiring the saloons to refuse the patronage of the ihembers of the Board (I. e., G. W. Horn, B. Butler, W. St. Clair and R. Philip,) and signed M. F. Ellsworth, President.-- The members are gentlemen of well- know a<ul undoubted sobriety and ab stinence-- hence tho foolish--foolish farce. It was a pleasing sight to see the hill covered with active ball players Saturday afternoon. It seems good to see the boys re-awakening to the Im portance of being able to brag and ploy with the neighboring clubs, and, by the way, thero is a match prospec tive with the Barreville nine. We have seen enough of Rowley, Butler, Leonard and others to warrant us ssying that their hands have forgotten noneot.thtir old-time cunning Cattle thieves have made two dam- aging raids on the stock belonging to Schroeder and Robinson in the pastures of L. H. Robinson's farm about three miles from this place. Two weeks ago a yenrliugcalf was missed and sup posed to have gone astray until, upon mjssing a blooded bull calf, seven months old, search revealed evidence Of theft. John Marshall assisted lu the search and on a piece of bis wood land found blood and other marks plainly showing tiiat both cattle had been slaughtered and carried away. The thefts were committed within three days of each other which shows either intimate acquaintance with the locality or fearlessness. These are unwelcome visitors to the farmers and if caught things will be made exceedingly "hot" tor them. There Is very little clue to the perpetrators of this thievery yet well-grounded suspicions are hinted. I had the pleasure of a short conver sation with Mr. O. Freeman, of Genoa Junction, Wis., who had but just re turned from the Black Hills. He re ports things there to be In a much bet ter condition than he had expected to find them.although there are more peo ple than can be provided with work, and emigration lu consequence is in che greater part reflex. The mining district comprises only a few acres and the precious metal lies deep making successful mining impossible only when supported by capital. The conclusion is that this (as other mines and other occupations) brings sudden wealth to a few while tho masses ears common wages. MA FOIS. #9"St. Louis was somewhat startled by a heavy bank failure on the 19th inst., the First National bank of Mis souri having closed its doors. Its capi tal stock was #2,000,000, and it was re garded by the public as a very sound institution. Shrinkage in values is the alleged cause of the failure. The de positors, are, It is claimed, to be paid in fall, as the assets of the bank are sufficient to insure the early payment of 50 cents on the dollar. Richmond Department.
