•;p -- • ICXFRAVAOANCB AT HTIXK , tfhere is no denylny that A good deal •f the flnitttcial trouble thrtt culnlliiates In bankruptcy comes from extravagant living. Sometimes It is the man him* self that paves the way for the sheriff, but qfiite often it Is his family. A case In poin. as t« the latter occurred not Very long ax*. A New Yorker hap pened to meet a down town acquain tance from a neighboring city and dropped into conversation with him.-- After a few ca&nal remarks the New Yorker asked about his friend's family expressing hope that they were well. "Oh, I suppose they are," said Mr. J. rather indifferently. --- "How is that ?r> asked the New York er. "1 hope nothing has happened.* Well yes, something has happened,** replied Mr. J. "The fact of the matter is I haven't seen my family in six months. You know I was doing a pret ty good business in B , and the folks at home got to living way up.-* Nothing would satisfy them but the best. As lung as I could afford it,^T let them have money right and left, bfrt presently times got hard, business foil off and I found that I was going be hind. I didn't want to alarm my fami ly, but I hinted that a little economy was desirable. But they paid no at tention. The demands for money went on just the same. Then I told them they must economize, that I was absolutely unable to support them in such extravagance. It was 110 use, though; if I didn't give them cash they got credit and the bills came to me. 1 f>t»ed it as long as I could, and then said: "Here, if you Won't live on what 1 can give you, out of my business, take the business itself," so I just made over the whole place to them and left. They ran it a few months, and then the sheriff stepped in and I haven't seen any of iny family since. I tried liaM to provide for them, but they wouldn't let me, and that is the result, lean hardly take care of myself now, and it is all on account of the extrava gance at home." JSTlt is a striking commentary on the labor situation in this country, thai a master carpenter in New York has just sent 200 carpenters and joiners to a firm in Manchester, England, Where they will be employed on the cotton Exchange which is now going on In the city. Their passage out will be paid for them in considerations of hav ing pledged themselves to remain one year. They have been guaranteed work for one, two or three years, just as they may prefer. The wages will not be much higher than here, but ithe lower cost of living in England will en able them to make larger savings. The same person who sends out this dele* gation of the carpenters, ayear ago sent over ISO stone masons, who fulfilled the stipulations of I heir contract faith* fully, and gave foil satisfaction to their employers. I^Stand by your friends, let come what may, is a good motto. If you don't stand by them you needn't expect t lie in to stand by you. So whether they be friends of high or low degree, in af fluence or poverty, stick to them and don't stop to inquire whether it will pay or whether it will be popular.-!-- Whenever you prove traitor and desert those who have stood up for you and helped your battles, you will find your self without any one to congratulate you upon your achievements, or com fort you in an evil hour when misfor tunes come thick and fast.
