The following account of it we take from the Wauke gan Gazette: "While the equestrian exhibition was in progress, 011 Thurs. day afternoon, quite a serious accident occnred, the particulars of which are as follows: Mr. Arthur Merrick was the escort of one of the ladies and rode a half-broken *>ut large and high mettled bay horse. As the party rounded the turn near the main entrance this horse left the track and ran into a crowd of p?Opli» Standing outside, striking Mr, Jarvifc Torrence, of McHenry, heavllv in the breast and shoulder and throw ing htm to the ground, giviug him a severe shock. The unfortunate man was able to walk around after the acci dent but was apparently suffering con siderably. It was the general verdict that Arthur ought, to break his colts before he exhibits them in such a crowded place." Mr. Torrence arrived home on Thursday evening, but on Friday was in a critical condition and sni!ering badly. Dr. Brown was called who upon examination found two of bis ribs fractured and the right lung badtj' bruised. Me f>» now improving as-fast as coVdd be expected. r TRACHKKS ASSOCIATION. "A young blood" by the name of Carr, hailing from Greenwood, came to til's place on the evening, of the 8th inst, with the declared intention of knocking Hubert Potter's two eyes Into one" but before he got through he would gladly have let the job to any one else as we are informed lie went home with one eye in ailing and his whole face in a condition not to be easily recognized by his own mother, while Hube escaped with hardly a scratch. BISMABK. CRYSTAL LAKE. EDITOR PLAIN DEALER.--Your not hearing from this piace last week was not owing so much to the wailt of news as to the want of time to chronicle the events of the week. A temperance meeting was held in the Baptist Church Friday evening, Sept. 7th, addressed by R"V» Mr. Woodward, of Elgin. That he is Msuc cess as a temperance lecturer we think all will agree who listened to his able remarks. ami our advice to societies looking for a speaker would be to en gage Mr. Woodward. A donation parly was h»dd at the Baptist Parsonage Wednesday, Sept. 12th. for the benefit of the Pastor, Iiev. B. P. Hewitt. The result was a pleas ant time ami between thirtv and forty dollars, which will not only be quite a l*elp to the Elder financially, hut a great encouragement. That the Church is prospering under his labors is evi dent from tfie fact that they have re paired to the Lake every month this .summer for baptism. The Literary Society Will be held Thursday evening,Sept.27th.- A ffreat many, not only members but others, look forward to I he meetings with in terest, but when they are put off two or thre? weeks lunger than the usual time they lose that interest and unless this thing is stopped we are afraid the society will not last a great while. The front part will be used for meetings, the back room for a reading room. Several people have donated books to the society; and although the intention of the society is to depend solely on their own exer tions, tlie presents are very thankfully received by the association. H The Birthday Parfy given at* J; -E. Beck ley's was largely attended by the young people of Nunda and vicinity and the presents were numerous aud very valuable. Messrs. On and after the 20th of September 1877 we shall adopt the Cash system. Shall charge goods to no one and shall entirely do away with the use of books for that purpose. We establish this system not merely for the present, not for the purpose of "shaking off" that class of customers known as notoriously slow pay or doubtful. On the contrary we expect to carry it out without auy deviation for all time to come. The advantages to the Cash System are obvious. It enables the merchant not only to buy his goods at a much lower ^cale of prices hut also to save the cdsh djiicotint which in a judiciously managed business will nearly or quite pay tlie running expenses. He can do away with the extrao expense for help necessary to conduct a credit business and can save to his customers not only the advantages above named, but the losses in cured which in the credit businest is unavoidably large from bad accounts.. It is an undeniable fact that the cash and prompt paying customers pay their proportion of these bad ac counts, or |n other words the merchant who does a credit business forms his hasis of percentage to cover the losses by bad accounts. It will be seen by our partial price list that we mean what we say and are ready to substantiate by figures as well as words the advantages of the cash system. Yours Respectfully. P, D. SMITH.
