Society for the courtesy extended to them in al lowing them to use the Church for their weekly meetings, and hope t;hat It may be in their power to reciprocate at uo distant day.' THE exercises at the Literary Society Meeting on Wednesday evening last were very interesting and attended by a good audience. The subject of de bate was well handled on both sides, and proved conclusively tbiat the^ younger portion of our Society are taking hold of the matter in earnest* and with a success seldom seen by new beginers. The exeraises for Saturday evening will be opened by an Ad dress by Rev. W. A. Adron, and we hope to see the house well filled an that occasion. PROF. S. N. TOWER, of whom we ppoice two weeks ago as visiting friends in tliis village, has been prevailed upon to remain and try and get up a Singing Class in this village. The matter is now being canvassed and if a sufficient number of scholars can be obtained a school will be opened at once. Prof. Tower is well known here as a first- class teacher in Singing, and we see no good reason why a large class cannot be formed. Let us all put our shoulder to the wheel and raise aclas; of one hun dred scholars for Prof. Tower. Sociable. Tho next Sociable by the Ladies of the Universalist Society will be held at the residence of J. B. Perry, Esq.on Thursday evening of next week, Jauua- ry 17th. All are cordially invited. C. B. CURTIS and wife, of this village, returned on Saturday evening from a visit East. SEE the card of Dr. Samuel Sherman, In another column. He practices the Electropathy system. TIIE Tax Collector has received his books, and will in a few days be making friendly calls upon tho Tax Payers of the town. WE forgot to inform our numerous friends that our office would be open on New Year's for the reception of Presents, and owing to this neglect on onr part we are out a number of valua ble presents. MINE host Wlghtman, of the River- aide House, will accept thanks for a pail •f very fine solid meat Oysters, pre sented us on Saturday last. In the words of Rip Van Winkle, *May you live long and brosper." WE are now having what might be called snug Winter weather. On Satur day morning the mercury indicated four degrees below zero, and on Monday morning twelve. With a foot of snow wo should now be happy. WE are preparing a cut and will next Week give a correct likeness of a Mc Henry Orator, as he appears when de livering his celebrated lecture on "Human Nature." It is our intention ta make the likeness "true to nature." LOST, strayed or stolon. A Ladies •Might cap. The finder will confer a great favor On the disconsolate young •aan who lost it by returning it at <once, -as it was borrowed property. No questions asked or answered. Dit<3.. W. Cox. Dentist, who has been iat, tbe Parker House for a number of months .past, la now putting in his iplates of teeth at 98 a plate. It is needless to remark the superiority of Ills woilc. as a number of the people of McHenry and surrounding country can and do testify. OUR Street Commissioner has been <loing a good work on the road leading 'South from this village. During the late muddy weather it was almost im- passibly, but he has now covered it with* heavy coat of gravel, which wi 11 have the tendency to make it pas- aible again OUR readers in Rtagwood and vicinity should not forget the Dramatic entertainment, under the auspices of the Good Templars of Me Henry, which takes place in that village on Thurs day,.to-morrow, evening. Turn out and give them a full house. It will well repay you. The Brass Band will ac company them. DR. A. A, RICE, Dentist, has arrived and taken-posessio.n of Ms Rooms in the Riverside House,, where he -will be liappy<to8ee his friends and all those wishing Ms professional services. Dr. Rice has an experience in his profes sion that is a oure guarantee that all work entrusted to film will be done in a professional manner and warranted to give satisfaction. Cail and see him. BY the kindness of J. A. Baldwin, we have received the Annual Calendar of Philip A. Iloyue, Commissioner of Deeds and United States Commissioner, Chicago. Besides a handsome Calendar in the center, on the margin can be found, the names of the Judges and Clerks of all the Court.*, from the Su preme Court if the United States to "the Police Court of Chicago, alee the incumbents of tho offices of U.S. Com missioner. U. S. Attorney, U. S. Mar shal. Internal Revenue Department, Postoffice Department, Custom House, U. S. Treasurer's office, Chicago City offices, Police Department, Ac. It is handsomely gotten up, and a very val uable document for every business man. Jesse A. Baldwin, to whom we are indebted for this, is one of the As sistants in the United States Attor neys office. -Ell Perkins, S. W. Mead, D. A. John THE Good Templars will repeat the Drama of -"The Last Loaf,'" together with the Farce of the "Persecuted Dutchman" and "Who Died Firtt," at the Riverside Hall, on Thursday even ing of next week, Jan. 17th. For particulars see colored bills now in circulation. Those of our citizens who railed to see it before should make arrangements to attend, and those who did will be sure to be there again. BY invitatiou, about forty couples of our town people assembled at the Riv erside Hall on Friday evening last, to Cnjov a few hours dance and pay their respects to the host and hostess of that popular Hotel. The -McHenry Quad rille Band were out in full force, and everybody having come out to have a good time, seemed to enter into the spirit of the occasion, and a royal good time we did have. During'the even ing a table was spread in the Hall and all were invited to partake which they did to their entire satisfaction. Every thing was free, but before retiring the company "chipped in'v to the tune Of $16 or 618, thus paying the music and leaving a balance to the host for the trouble. The company broke up about midnight, well pleased with their eveuings entertainment. IT has been decided that the Grand Masquerade Ball, under the direction of the Geneva Lake Quadrille Baud, will take place at the Riverside Hall, in this village, on Friday evening February 8tli. This will be, without doubt, one of the grandest parties ever given in McHenry, and it need not'be an expensive one. The tickets will be put at a very low price, and each one can procure their own costume, repre sent what character he or she may choose, and make their costumes them selves. Masks will be furnished at from ten to twenty cents each. The Leader of the Band, Mort Rogers, in forms us that the Band will be compos ed of six pieces, and with this assurance we can guarantee those who attend as flue music as was ever heard in Mellen ry. The tickets-will be issued in a few days, wheu a full programme will be published. In the mean time make * our preparations to attend the Grand Masquerade. Remember the date, February 8rh. R. V. TIIOMI'SOSI, successor to L. Francisco, in the wagon and carriage making and general Blacksmith busi ness, whose shop can be found opposi te the Parker House, in this village, is now running that establishment to its utmost capacity, and turning out work equal to the best to be found in the county. Mr. Thompson comes among us with the reputation of a thorough going busi- eess man, and this, with the excellent reputation of this old established stand we predict hfe will do a large and pay ing business, and be a good addition to the business interests of McHenry. Persons wanting anything in his line should not fail to give Mr. Thompson a call. HAVING- secured the services ot H. D. Holmes, we hereby notify our patrons that he is authorized to receive money in our name and receipt for the same. He will immediately start out among our patrons on a collecting and can vassing tour, and we hope our friends will receive him cordially and send him away happy. We ask you to give o^r Agent, Mr. Holmes, a fair hearing, when he calls, which he will do as soon as timu and roads will admit, HEBRON. EDITOR PLAINDEALKR. January 15th. At midnight on New Years eve. bells were rung and pistols fired, awakening many from their peaceful slumbers and removing the drowsy ' feeling from the eyes of those who did not re tire uutil after twelve, that thoy might bid farewell to the Old Year and welcome in the New. The sun shone brightly New Year's morning and luckily it did not rain. Service was held at the Catholic church both afternoon and evening. The eve ning services were very interesting. Having1 done business for several years on the Credit Sys tem, and finding that thonell we have done a good trade, ana have on our books a list of names who arc good and honest men, yet to the man who pays cash, ihoee names are ot' no benefit, because both the cash and the credit buy er certainly pay more' for th«ir goods. No one will deny the fact that goods sold for cash can be sold much cheaper than on time, for the reason there are but few merchants doing business, who sell on time, that can buy goods for cash, and the live merchant who buys goods with all discounts off, aud with money in hand to take advantage of anything that comes along, can save money for his customers. Besides, parties buying on time, whether whole sale or retail, if not in a direct way, pay each a share for all poor debts, and the best merchant liv ing, iet him be ever so careful, will make some poor debts if he does a large credit business.
