Every man, woman and child should examine Hendersons celebrated Cus tom Made Boots and Shows before buy ing. For sale by Perry A Martin. THE Chicago Times has for a few days past been discussing "hell" exten sively, and then by way of conclusion, asks if there is any such Institution.-- Ask Beecher, Story. He knows. ALL those interested in the bringing •oat of the Cantata of "Esther," and who are willing to assist, by singing or •otherwise, are requested to meet at Bishop's Hall, on Thursday^ to-morrow) •evening, at 7 o'clock, sharp. WE have an article headed "Gram mar as a Science,1' it being a paper Qately read before the Teachers' Asfo- •ciation, which is unavoidably crowded out this week, but will appear in our; next. WE learn that the UnlversaStet Society are thinking of bringing otit the Cantata of "Esther, the Beautiful Queen." some timp during the month of February. If they should do so we predict for them a rousing benefit. WE have received notice from C. Street & Son, Hebron, to change the price«ef Pigs in their advertisement to $10 and^15. As their advertise ment was already printed for this Week we give them the benefit of this notice. All Pigs offered for sale are warrauted first class. THE Dramatic entertainment at Kiversidelffall on Thursday eventng last was well attended and highly ap preciated by all. The Play of ""The Last Loaf" was rendered in a superior mauner, and shows that the naem-beTS are improving by practice- They 'Con template getting «mta newPtay in a few weeks. "IIELLEN BlazesJ" exclaimed one of our citizens, ou a recent frosty mera- ing,as he stifldenly and forcltfly came in contact with a portion oT the side walk. Just what he meant -bv fthat probably iuvoluncary exclamation is not clear to us, for he is supposed to be a thorough'church going rnran, bat his circle of temale acquaintances nt*y be |,larger than we are aware oC WE would call the attention of oar readers to the new advertisement of Smith,Aldrieh AHsy thorn, in another bolumn, headed "Bargains, BargainsT •t'fhey are offering extraordinary in ducements to buyers, one of which is UlJ pounds of Sugar for one dollar.-- That is certainty a Sweet offer, and one hat will make an almost empty pocket jook smile. Read their *ad" and call tndexamiue their bargains. As will be seen by a notice elsewhere n this paper, the Oelieeter Cor the owu of McHenry will be at designa- •d places each week for the purpose of ecelving Taxes. There H two things ertain to coins, Taxes a*xl death, and u order to be ^*ell prepared for the atter it Is necessary that you promptly ttend to the first* Therefore heed he notice and "walk ay to the Cap- uius office aJid settle." Hswoan't drunk? No, we couldn't ay be was. But you #ee It was just ke this, ltrwas the morning after lew Years. You know how folks are enerally fixed after this occasion.-- fell, he seemed all right, anyhow, he >ld us that be had sworn off for 1878 I ntire. We have no doubt but that he li, but wheu we Me a uian attempt 's to light a cigar with a quill toeth- ick, U Jooks--wall--4,Wnder splcious," iyhowP THE distinguished Meterelogist and Weather PiophH, Professor Tlce, of St. Louis, has issued his Annual N» tiotial Weather Almanac for 1878, in which he tore tells the weather for eve ry day in the year, explains the theory clearly on which his predictions are based, gives directions by which the unscientific can fortell the weather, and other valuable matter. The whole constitutes a work of great practical value to everyone, and is almost indis- pensible to farmers. For sample copy and terms, of sale send 30 cents to Thompson, Tice A Co., St. Lcuis, Mo. Air exchange says: "Have you no ticed that cute way which a fashiona ble young lady has of grabbing the tail "end of her dress in promenading? It is indeed a funny and ludicrous sight to see a lovely woman stop at a street crossing, give her body a fearful twist, atoop low and reach backward nearly to her heels and grab from five to 40 pounds of trail, full of mud and dirt, and shake it five or six times like a buzzard fixing his wings to fly,and then hobble across th e street like a lame turkey to the other side, then "let go" and turn off like a stern wheeler In a storm." THE preparations for the Masquerade on the 8th of uoxt month is going on satisfactorily, everything promises one of the grandest times ever known in McHenry. Parties from Chicago, Woodstock, Geneva Lake, Richmond and other points have already signi fied their intention of being present, and the costumes that are being pre pared and spoken for evidence that the display In this particular will be the finest. And another thiug to be taken Into consideration is the splendid music,--the Geueva Lake Quadrille Band of six pieces--which announce ment of itself is sufficient to draw a crowd. Therefore we say remember the day and date, Friday, Feb. 8th, at Riverside Hall. WE saw on Monday last, at the barn of Thos. Knox, a curious freak of na ture. It was no less than a calf with two lower jaws and two tougues. One was in the natural place while the oth er was on the side aud when closed dove-tailed in between the two, each jaw having a perfect and distinct ton gue. Otherwise the calf does not dif fer from a common calf except that his head is perhaps a little larger.-- When we saw it on Monday It was two days old, and apparently in good health, although very thin. It was found necessary to pour milk down it with a bottle. Should they succeed in keeping it alive it would certainly be a great curiosity. It was dropped on the farm of a mau by the name of liigalls, who lives Southeast of this village.-- What should cause this strange freak of nature is indeed a mystery. SHEDD A Co., of Chicago, commenc ed cutting Ice from the Mill Pond at this place on Friday last, and on Friday and Saturday were working about forty hands, filling about two cars per hour with fine, clet»r Ice, some 7$ inches in thickness. They had intended to put at work one huudred hands on Monday morning, but the rain aud mild weath er of Sunday made it iiupracticable, but they will do so as soon as it again freezes up. Ou Friday and Saturday they shipped something over forty car loads of Ice. This is the same com pany who last seasoh made prepara tions to build exteusive Ice House here* which project they will now carry out, and now have a gang of men put ting up the building, a part of it be ing already raised. The building is to be one hundred and fifty feet square and all under one roof. This they pro pose to till this season, besides all they ship to Chicago. Thisisr.ot only a good thing for McHenry at large but more particularly for the laboring class. They can now ge t work at re spectable wages and their pay prompt ly, thus enabling them to get through the Winter iu good shape. For this all should bo than kful. SPELLING. And now, while thanking them In the most hearty manner, we hope at no distant day to be able to show our gratitude iu a more substan tial manuer. Bv ORDER OF MEMBERS. EDITOR PLAIXDEAXKR Perkin'a hu morous lecture was highly appreciated and applauded by some, but ethers did not seem to enjoy it. Many thought his jokes low aud common. HI*, ap pearance was not attractive, but It was amusing to watch the play of his fea tures. His relations were displayed by pictures on the wall behind him. Miss Edna Jewett, of this city, was married at the residence of the bride's father, at 8 o'clock Wednesday even ing, January 16th, to W. C. Allen of Heillsville, Wisconsin, About forty in vited guests were preseut to witness the ceremony. The bride looked beau tiful. Her dress was of wine colored silk trimmed with silk velvet of the same color. The parlors were decorat ed with sin 1 lax and choice natural flowers, sent from New York City. One beautiful pyramid of fruit stood on a table. The presents were beauti ful artd numerous. Supper was an nounced at about 9 o'clock aud all partook of a bountiful repast. The bride and bride-groom departed for iheir home at 11 o'clock. Many friends accompanied them to the depot and all wished them a happy future. Harvey Davis, brother of Doctor L. H. Davis, died very suddenly on Friday last, of what was supposed to be Apo plexy. His funeral was attended on Sunday by a large number of relatives and friends. NUN6A EDITOR PLAIN-DEALERJ--The' Read ing Rooms are again open from 9 p. m, until 0 o'clock each day. It Is a cosy place to spend a few lioura during the afternoon or evening, and it Is surpris ing that more people do not go there and use the things, which are furnished at no little trouble and expense. The library has lately been ealarged by tht addition of several books of the iiigh- est grade, and a person has a variety from which he may select reading matter to suit himself. If the people of the lowfi aud vicinity iuterest them selves In the reading rooms and give the encouragement of their presence, sometimes, it will not only encourage the young men by showing them that their efforts to furnish a reading room are appreciated, but will also oiicour- age them to do more in building up the society. The Reading Rooms are designod for the publio--that Isevery- body. The parties given by the Xunda Pleasure Club are enjoyable and pros perous, although they have almost all kinds of obstacles to surmount. The roads have been in very bad cenditiou since the club was organised, thus many people that live at a distance have been prevented from joining; besides, there have been meetings and entertainments of other kinds, wh'ch have tended to lessen the number of people in attendance at the parties. However the attendance has been fair, promptly paying all expenses, and the Club are looking for sleighing, and a much " Better- time coming." Under the management of H. L. Sheldon, the very best of order is maintained and good behavior iu every respect charac terises the club and Its parties. NoncR All knowing themselves indebted to G. W. Horn A Co., Xunda, will please call at once and settle, as all unsettled accounts will be left for collection on the 1st day of February next. G- w. HORN ft CO. On Friday evening a most successful festival, for the benefit of Rev.G. L. Wiley, was held at Nunda Hall. Mrs. B. D. Vosburg and Mrs. Benjamin-Rob- Inson were the managers of the festi val, aud they, assisted by many other equally zealous ladies aud gentleman, worked Indefatlgably to make the oc casion speak somewhat of the esteem which is felt for our minister. At the door everybody cheerfully paid the 10. cent admittance fee and within pur chased tickets which read "Oysters" for 15 cents each and those which read " Supper" for 35 cents. At about 8:30 tlie house (or the people in it) wa<t called to order and a programme of entertaining exercises, ccnsistlug of Music, Sougs, Declamations, etc., was taken up; after which the Supper en* gaged the earnest attention of every body. There were ninny expressions of praise spoken of the supper aud the whole entertainment, for it is seldom that a festival gives as much satisfac tion in every respect as this one. The net profit was about 934, besides some " Baskets full." All this speaks well for all hands--The people would not give such patronage unless they were generous, and they could not be gener ous unless they regarded their mluister as being full worthy of their generosity aud esteem. CRYSTAL LAKE. EDITOR PLAIN-DEALER:--Beautiful weather is this for people who have nothing to do but enjoy the mud and sunshine. But for the farmer who has produce to sell, wood to draw, a flo-'k of sheep to . fatten nnd many other things which require good roads and a sound market, to the merchant who has accounts against these farmers, and iu fact to all business men, how differ ent the adjective which expresses their opinion of it. The Union Meetings being held in this place are very interesting to many, and will uo doubt be the means or doing a great deal of good, especially iu uuiting the hearts of christalus. The Literary Society did not meet last week and will not this, on acceuut of the meeting. Notice will be giyen a week previous to the meeting of the ociety. Renovating Beds and mattresses seetus to be the most important busi ness in this place just how, there being two machines and two firms for doing the business. Surely people ought not to sleep on hard aud unhealthy beds' If it continues to be as warm the re mainder of the winter as it has .been thus far the ice crop will not be very large, but that on haud will bring a price Mr. Dole is getting every thing ready for business when it shall froze up.
