We are now anxiously waiting for the MBiddy*' that can beat that. REV. ROBT. COLTER, of Chicago, will deliver his Lecture on "Clear Grit," in the Congregational Church, Woodstock •n Thursday evening of next week, March 21st. This Lecture is highly ppoken of by those wh<^ have heard It, nnd those of our readers who can should not fail to hear It. Mr Colyer is one ff tbo finest Orators iu the WeQj, AN exchange says that a new way of fastening on a ladies hat is to bore the tops of their ears, put in gold hoops and h#ve their hat strings tied through tbtm. Thus, step by step, we tread the pathway to perfection, and ere the darkness of death envelopes all the world, man will have utilized his "nose In holding up his pants or pulling on to* boots. ' THE Literary Society will hold their Mkt and last meeting of the season on Saturday evening of next week, March »d, ml which time the Committee will present a programme a little different flrom any former one, and one that can not fall of being highly Interesting to all who may attend. The programme will appear in full in these columns next week. FITZSIMMONS & EVANSON are filling their store with seasonable goods for the Spring and Summer trade, which they have marked down so low that you cannot afford to steal them. They •ell strictly for cash or ready pay, and consequently are enabled to offer rare Inducements to the buying public. Call and examine their stock and learn prices. Store near the Depot. SPRING has really come, and the old weather prophets, with a few excep tions, have given up that stereotype phrase, "we'll get pay for this." For our own part we don't ask pay. As far as the weather is concerned we are willing to go it "on tick," if they will only keep it as warm as at present. It would be more pleatfant with a little less mud, but then we can afford to wait. The grass is green and growiug finely, and farmers are getting out their machinery preparatory to start ing Springs work. WHILE in Woodstock last week we oalled at the Gallery of J. S. Medlar, and had the pleasure of looking over some of the finest specimens of Phqle graphs and Carbon Pictures that we oversaw. As we have salt! many times before Medlar is one of the best Art ists in the Northwest, always up to the times in every new style that comes •at. sparing neither time nor expense to please his many customers. These new Carbon Pictures are certainly the fliest, and cannot fall to please any who see them. When in Woodstock #| not tell to call at his Gallery. W* would call the attention of readers to the advertisement of Garri son's Early Favorite Tomato, to be found in another column. In regard to this 'Joniato we would say that the seed sold last year was. through a mis take in storing away seed, mixed with another variety, which mistake was not discovered until fruiting season, and therefore we do not wish those who procured It last seasou to condemn it on that account. This year it is all right, aud we guarantee it, to he the finest early Tomato grown. Pe/sons in this section, can procure seed by calling or sending their orderTto this office. Read the advertisement. ' • : THE dancing public should beaC -itf mind the Sheet and Pillow Case Party at Riverside Hall, on Monday evening next, the 18th. These parties are equal if not better than a Masquerade, and much cheaper, as there is no ex cise for Cpstumes, all that is needed being a Sheet and Pillow Case, and when you arrive at the Hall the Com mittee will show you how to wear them. Masks will be furnished by the Committee. Let all who ever dance come out and have a good time, while those who do not dance will find lots of sport watching those who do. The music will be furnished by the Mc- Henry Quadrille Baud. Remember the time, Mouday evening next, March 18th.- Sit. JM. 4th. 0th. Sth. 7th. &tL 9th. 10th. THE members of the Good Templars Lodge of.this village, propose giving an entertainment about the last week of this month, the exact date of which will be announced in due time, at which time they will present the fol lowing programme: i 1st. Quartette. Tableaux. (Goddess of Liberty.) Recitation. ' . < * Tableaux, (two scenes,) IrtHu Song. ,:rS v , 1 : . Comedy. „ "l % ^ ,% ,4 Quartette. > r; Tableaux; (trtiSie Ki"s" Jlccitutlon. Tableaux, (The-Bouquet^. The former entertainmenj^ gotten up by this society gave general satis faction to all who attended, and if we are to judge from the programme this will be even better than any for mer one. We predict for them a rous ing iiouse. THE Cantata of •• Esther," for the benefit of the Band, promise* to be far ahead of any former effort In that line. All those who took part before will do so now with the advantage of expert ence, which cannot fail of making it much more Interesting to all who at tend. Besides this Mrs. Anita Wellner has kindly volunteered to favor the audience with some of „her best songs during the evening, and those who have not heard her should not fail to do so now. As we have before said, the object for which the entertainment is gotten up is a most worthy one, %nd our citizens should, one and all. turn out and give them a rousing benefit. The Georgia Minstrels ar« also re hearsing some new and side-splitting' pieces for the occasion, and their per formance alone ljrill be worth the price of admission. Do not fail to see them both evenings. WE have received a uew advertise ment from Dwight A Forrest, Boot and Shoe dealers, Woodstock, which will appear in our next. And by the way, while In Woodstock on Saturday last, yre noticed a large pile of new goods boyig received at this store, and they informed us\lt was not half what they had purchased for the Spring trade. They are selling entirely on the cash principle, and will sell you any goods in their Hue, of the best quality and make, at prices that will astonish the natives. They have no fancy prices, "quick sales and small profits" being their motto, and are indeed offering bargains seldom if ever found outside of the wholesale trade.--- They handle none but the best of goods, and warrant everything jtt#% represented. Look out for their ne# advertisement next week, and in th#j meantime if you want auything in their Hue do not fail to give thorn a call. Notwithstanding the cry of times, quite a numberof improvements are reported as contemplated in this village this Spring, among which are the following: Smith & Snyder, a store 34x80, two stories high, on the lot Eastof P. D. Smith's store. Fred Schnorr, a building 30x40 on the lot West of John M. Smith's Hard ware Store, which he will use as a Boot and Shoe Store and Shop. The Methodist Society will build a new fence around their Church lot, and are also talking of building a Parson age. • • • -- Hon. R. Bishop contemplates build ing a large building South of his Mill, to be used as a Wagon Factory. , Besides this building A. H. Hanley & Sons are making some good improve ments on their grounds West of the Railroad, filling in the clay holes at the old Brick Yard, the gravel for which they are drawing from the un sightly kuoll near the Pickle Factory, also making a great improvement in that locality. g Considering the times we think this a good showing, and proves that our citizens have enterprise aud pluck sufficient to surmount all obstacles. We shall undoubtedly be able to report more improvements during the season. WHILE all Motions are helping to furnish emigrants to the West, Mc Henry will not be outdone even In that. One day last week we learn that the "boss" hunter, the " boss" ditcher and the man that is too much married packed up two days rations and with a boat started tor Texcu. They had not been gone long before it was found that the two former had gone without a "furlough" aud immediately n de tachment was sent iu pursuit planted a -battery 011 the bridge neighboring town and awaited the ar rival of the craft, but lo, she did not make her appearance, when a scjut was sent iu to report, when behold he found the deserters safely at hotne awaiting his arrival. |lrord was im mediately sent to "drawoff the forced' t»nd now everything Is quiet on the raging Fox, aud Texa* has lost--what? Excuse* these tears. We might tell what cansed their sudden return but we refrain. JAS. NlSH, CoHrty TrOMttiftM. Woodauwk, Maxcta 12, THE Concert given by Mrs. Anita Wellner, assisted by some of the musi cal talent of McHenry, at Riverside Hall, on Thursday evening last, was one of the richest musical treats of the season. Mrs. Wellner IsNpne of the finest singers we ever heard* and her rendering of the different pieces on the programme took the house completely bv storm. " Eilleen Allanna," and 44 Casta Dlva,M won for her enthusiastic encoree, to which she gracefully re sponded with very appropriate pieces. She has an easy graceful manner on the stage, and with her clear, sweet voice, completely carries the audience with her. She was ably assisted by Mrs. H. H. Nichols, Mr. Will Siers, and Miss Mattie MuOmher, the latter of whom played the Piano In a manner not to be excelled. The Pladdte Song, by Masters Clydie Nichol aud Freddie Race, was rendered in a superior man ner. and was received with thunders of applause. Taken all In all it was the finest Coucerc that was ever given in this county, and those who failed to at tend missed a rare musical treat., The McHeury Cornet Baud also furnished some excellent music for the occasion. Mrs. Wellner had intended to visit Richmond this week Thursday, but 6n account of the entertainment of the Rifle Team ou that occasion has de cided to postpone it until next week, when we can iufortn our reade'rs In that 6ectlou they will be able to listen to an entertainment equaled by few and surpassed by none. We hope to hear that she received a rousing beueflt on that occasion.
