THE Club House of the Sycamore Rod and Gun Club at Fot Lake Is now finished and furnished, ,and a large party of Sycamore people occupied it. last week. They report that it is the finest and pleasantest place on all the Lake. The Club is now building a boat house by excavating the bank and ru«fing it over* The stairs up the bluff ' *are completed. The inemb^is of the Club will find the key of the Club House with Mr. Snyder at the Wllley bwiss Cottage; he has charge of th<| Club property during their absenoe* So says the Sycftmoje EepubHcan. A genera] Invitation to all, throughout the county, Is extended WE learn that C. Dale Armstrong, the Reader and Ventriloquist, will give one of his entertainments at the Congregational Church, in Ringwood, an Friday evening of this week. We can assure on* leaders in that vicinity that if they fail to hear him they will mis#a rare trtat. His entertainments are unique, refined end highly enjoy able. Go aud hear him by all means. GEO. SMITH, a Butcher who works at the Central Market of R. W^ilte, had the misfortune to break his leg on Friday last. The particulars as we learn them are that they were butch ering a steer, and after knocking the animal down Smith stepped around to get his knife, when the animal, in the throes of death, kicked him, breaking his leg about half way be tween the knee and foot. Dr. Brown was called and set the broken limb, and we leam that he is now doing at well as could be expected. THE fun loving public should bear iii| mind that on Friday of this week, Oct, 4th, Mayu's Combination will pitch their tent in this village, and give two performances, afternoon and evening. That this is One of the finest little shows now traveling is acknowledged by all who have witnessed' their per formances. The best gymnasts, educa ted horpes and dogs, and the best Clown In the world, are a few of the attractions, and We shall expect to see the tent crowded at both entertain ment* on the day advertised. "bumUU'I. ' I Just as we go to press we learn that the Hardware Store of J. Story <& Sou, near the Depot in thH village, was entered by burglars last night, -and goods to the amount of$«K»0 taken. They affected an entrance through a rear window aud after ransacking the money drawer, which fortunately con tained but a small amount of change, cleaned out tbfe bhow Cnae filled with Pocket and Table Cutlery of all kinds. This is the first burglary7 which has takeu place here, aud should be a war ning to our busiueta men to be on tlieir guard. • <• THE Republican Mass Meeting at Woodstock on Saturday next, at which Geh. John A. Logan, aud others will speak, promises to be oue of the larg est gatherings of the kind that has beeu held in the county for years.-- Every voter shoulii turn out and liear this gallant statesman on the political Issues of the day. and more especially on the Financial question. Few men in the country are better .posted on this question, which is occupying to such an extent, the minds of the peo ple, and it Is highly important that all should be well informed on tbe sub ject. Remember the day and date, Saturday next, Oct. 5th. , WE had the pleasure 4 few days ago or seeing a Portrait.of A. S, Wright, of Woodatock, Paiuted by Miss Cad Owen, whleh we consider ono of the best we ever saw. Miss Owen, in the past year, lias far surpassed all her former efiorM and while all thought her pictures were-superior specimens of Art, they are no^stmply" splendid. She has a talent M this line possessed by few of our best Artists, and surpass* ed by none, aud we predict for Iter a briUlant career in the future. The Portrait of which we speak waa on ex hibition at the County Fair, and took first premium, but tuiug hi such a bad ligbt that it did jVot show its true mer it. It should be seen as we saw it to be Appreciated. Miss Owen also had a nmitber of Figures on exhibition at the Waukegan Fair, all of which, t«M*k first Premiums. y! ..; , 'J7 NOTICE.' - The ladies of the White Ribbon "Club arerequested to meet Saturday, Oct. 5th, at 3 o'clock p. M. at the USni- versalist church. As the weather is eooier and all seem to have more lei» snre, we trust there will be more inter est manifested. , MUH. F. G MATKS, Pre«LA®a». FA*HT A BKCKWITU, Secretary. HoHeaijr County Teaoh«r» Association. The regular meeting of the McHenry County .'Teachers Association will be held at Nuuda, Saturday Oct. 5th, s1878, Lst all interested In the cause of edit* cation, Specially teachers, be present, W. W. PERSONS, Secretary, HlOHWW HOUliEfty. On Monday evening last, about six o'clock, Wm. Stoffle. who works for O. Bishop, was Waylaid In the road two mihj* South of this village, by three disguised ruffians knocked from his buggy with a club, and robbed of his pocket book containing about ttt'2.-- The facts as we learn them from Stoftte himself, are as follows: He had been down the river road selling machinery for Mr. Bishop, and wait returning home, and when driving lelsntely along near the School Honse, two miles below this village, three men sprang from the bushes by the side of the road, one seised his horse, and another dealt him a heavy blow with * club over the head, knocking hits from the buggy. While he was down they took his pocket book. Ha bad no weapon of defense with the exception of a common pocket knife. This he draw and faced his assailants, when they came for him one with a club and the other with a knife. He defended him self as best he could, receiving several kaife scratches on the hands and face, but succeeded in wounding 6tte Of his assailants in the arte. At this juncture a wagon waa heard coming and the robbers fled. He could not recognise them as they were all three blacked up and evidently had prepared themselves for this particular job, supposing that he had been out collecting an<l* Would have considerable money wlthXhlm.-- The money thef got belonged to Stoffle himself. \ The general opinion Is that whoever it was they were not strangers In this locality. If he succeeded In cutting one of them upon the arm It would be^ a mark thu. he will not easily get rid ot, and measures should be taken to ferret out the perpetrators of this bold rbbbery. It Is a great pity he did not have a revolver, for he might have done the country a service by prompt ly shooting the villians dead. Persons travel! us should go pre pared to give these gentry a warm reception In the future. THK JTAIK. Si?, aft t Six SxlO ChroniQ8fcfor 3* cents,a^ J B Blake's. j Itesa T%tB*C<«inty Fair was held at stock last week, »ind in point of Exhi bition was equal to the best ever held by the. Society, although the atten dance was not as large as iu many former yeans. The second day Was rainy, and practically a failure, but the third and fourth were pleasant which gave the Society a chance to go through with their programme, which they did in good shape, with the exception of the Races. This part was a regular farce, aud we think the Society made a great mistake in tills particular. We know it is said that Horse Racing Is demoralizing, but we notice that when a Race comes of! tho*e who are the loudest in tlieir con demnation of such performances be fore, are always tn the foremost places to see the Race. And we also rotlce that when the Races adveftteed are a failure they are sure to be tlie first oue* to pronounce the whole Fair the same. Time Aiid space will not permtt us to give an extended notice of the differ ent departments as we would like to do. and we cau only sav that the. show of Hogs, Sheep, and Cattle was good, while in tlw Agricultural machinery department Dacy had more than his usual exhibit. Floral Hall was well filled iu some classes, vis, ladies fancy work and Vegetables while there was a noticeable absence of the usual dis play of Stoves, Sewing Machines, Ac.-- The Floral Display was as fine as we ever saw, the most noticeable of which was^lauts and powers from the 'jfar- djn of F. Maicus, of Woodstock, who we have no hesitation In saying has the best flower garden to be found in the county. No person who goes to Woodstock should fail to call and aee his splendid Flower Garden. At the timfe of writing we have not learned what wete the receipts, bat we judge must be somewhat below expenses. This is to be deplored* as the officers have spared uo pains, and left nothing undone to make It a suc cess. Such worthy efforts should hare . . , . . The boys played the game with hardly a single error, and' al though the Bluffs had what is called a "Curve Pitcher" the Fox Rivers batted' him all over the field. At the end of the sixth innings the Blulfo found that -they had no business with the country boys, and voluntarily relinquished the game. By order of ALPHONZO TTXRR, Acting Master. flNK ItOftSKS. While at the Fair, last week we had the pleasure of seeing the fine blooded horses, owned by Effljah Buck, of Crys tal Lake, and have no hesitation In saying, that taking all things into con sideration, thajr have no «uperion In the Northwest. The liret one WS noticed was "Red Cross* a six year old Chestnut,by BrighamB * He by Clay's Membrlno liief, and to say that he la a fine ani- thal does not half express It. He is simply perfection Itself. During the hurry we did not have tit* opportuni ty to get particulars aa *o weight Ae.%; but should judge him to lie about W hands high, well developed, in weight about 1100 pound*, and in ttjrh and action he is as fine a specimen of a horse as one could with to see. Ills pedigree on both sides is from a family of trotter*, and any vone who sees l»im in harness, cannot m^t<t, admira his style and ictio(IVjPlj a horse that would be plckeabntamong a thousand for his prominence, iutelllgeooe and general good point*., v Our attention was nest called to •*Gleanor,n a three year old by Lake- lsnd Abdellah. He by Rysdlke's Hkm- lltoulan. He is a bright Bay, about 14 or 15 hands high, and another model of perfection and beanty. \ No description we can give of t two horses will half <16 them justice. Mr. Buck ha* just cat$e to feel proud of them as two of the finest young horses to be found ii|. the county, and no breeder of horse* or farmer should fall to see them. They will well repay a journey of twenty mile*. REPLY TO "A GARfe" ^ ' PLAINDEALBR^>-t.l) flfofr §a- r of last week, Sept. 25th, we noticed an article under the head of "A Card," signed by (3. Henry of Nunda, in which are ^uch gross misrepresentation* In regard to us that we cannot let it pass by unnoticed. In tAld article he rep- resents that we charged him 920 for the use of a room and threo beds four days. Now th* facts are these. The party came to my place, used three sleeping rooms and five bed* for four days,Jtad the use of the kitchen and stove to do tlieir cooking, all the Flour, Butter aud Milk they wanted, besides helping themselves to what else they wanted, and no, questions were asked. Besides this they had one and two boats, minnow Pfills, &c., all the time they were here. XFinally, on the night before their departure I took the things out of my D^ing Room, andla^ them use it for a Dance. Now I would ask any reasonable man if my charge was unreasonable? 1 tried to use them well, and when they "kicked" at the price I told them to pay me what they were a mind to, and received for my trouble and outlay simply $8,00 and tbeu he goes out and report* that I tried to rob bim. We think, and do not fear but all unprejb» diced persons will think, that I was the one robbed, and if we are to judge by( the leugtli of the bristle* we pro- noumtc tho said Henry the biggest hog in the county.
