„ FAJRM Aim HOME. j, JWwa Mmkin** / ' WHSWb grabs at the rooi of Cabbages may be destroyed as follows: Loosen tiie earth close to the root with a hoe, even so much as to disturb the plant a little. Make a flotation of one part of soft soap to twelve of soft water, aiid p$ar -bout the root in ©lose contest with the plant. One-fotfrth of a^pint of thin solution to a plant tw<^ or thrftp times during the season is sufficient. Weaker suds poured on the top would destroy the green worm. ONE hog, kept to %he age of 1 year, if furnished with suitable material, will convert a cart-load per month into a fer tilizer which will produce a good crop of corn. Twelve loads per year, multi plied by the number of hogs usually kept by our farmers, would make suffi cient fertilizing substance to grow the corn used by them; or, in other words, the hog would pay in manure the cost of his keeping. In this way we can af ford to make pork at the present low prices, but in no other way caa it be done without loss. HAYING placed ya^r bees into winter quarters, store your mind with bee lit erature, for it will make you wise and successful, and then make hives and boxes for next season's operations, or procure them of some reliable dealer. This is very often the most economical way --but don't wait till next spring be fore you send your order for them, and, then get them by express. Order them early and get them by freight, thereby saving expense and worry.--American Bee Journal. % %* KNOWING the reputation -pf a success ful cider-maker for making and keeping good cider good, we made a personal re quest for the process which has so long been a great secret, and we obtained the following hints that will enable any one to keep cider sweet: Make the Qider of good, clean, sound apples, after the weather turns cool; put it in good bar rels, perfectly clean--any taint in old barrels will spoil the cider. To a forty- gallon barrel of pure fresh cider put in six eggs, whites and yelks well beaten; then add two table-spoonfuls of salt to hasten the clarifying; draw off once a week for three or four times, and you will have good cider that will keep good. WHITE CLOVEB.--It is theippinion of a farmer of high authority and taste that every pasture should contain some white clover. It will afford more feed at certain times of the year than any Mnd of grass or clover. It will not flourish on damp soils or those that are very poor. It will do very well in a partial shade, as a grove or orchard, but to make the highest excellence it should be sown where it will have the advan tage of full sunlight. It is easy to se cure patches of white clover iffB pasture by scattering seed in early spring oA bare places, and brushing it in. One pound of seed is sufficient to start white clover in a hundred places in a pasture. The disposition of this clover is to spread by means of the branches tl/at run along the surface of the ground qnd take root. Having secured a sod-a foot square, it will soon extend so as to cover first a yard, then a rod. How TO PUT DOWN EGOS.--I send you a recipe for putting down eggs that I have used t6 our entire satisfaction for over twenty-five years. I never ex pect to find, nor do I wish for, a better one, either in point of simplicity, econ omy or certainty. Take of good salt half a pint, of unslacked lime a piece the size of a teacup. Put both in a stone jar. Pour into the jar two gallons of boiling water. Let it stand until perfectly cold, then put in your eggs. Be sure that your eggs are all good. Care must be taken not to crack any of them in putting them in, or they will spoil immediately. The eggs must be entirely covered with the bxine, and kept in a cool place. Be careful not to have too much salt, or the yelks may harden. I have kept eggs in that way from September until May, and used them for the most delicate cake and omelet. A friend in the commission business, in making some changes in his store, "found a barrel in which there weite a few eggs that had been over looked, and had been in a brine pre pared in that way nearly two years. He took them home, and they were found to be perfectly sweet and nice.--Cor. Detroit Tribune. Domestic Betmamy. s FOB OILING WALNUT FURNITURE.-- Raw linseed oil, rubbed with a flannel cloth, then polish with a dry piece of flannel; bq careful not to put too much on. s . HERMITS.-- Two eggs, one i^d, a half cups sngai, two-thirds cup butter or lard, one cup currants; one teaspoon of soda. Boll out like cookies. Boll the cuments in flour to prevent their sinking. Sprinklesugar on top before baking. * 7 • DARK CAKE.--Three eggs, two cups of eugar, one cup of butter, one cup of milk. If the milk is sour, leave out cream of tartar; one teaspoonful soda, two teaspoonfuls cream tartar; three and a cupk of flour, one teaspoonful different spice, two cups of raisins, one of the cups chopped fine. OL» BACHELOR'S CHICKEN Pnt--Put yotfr chicken in a pot, with as much witer as you wish gravy. If the ohicken is young, it will only be necessary to let it come to a boil; don't forget to season it. For the crust, thVco pints of flour; rub three teaspooniuls of cream tartar and a Half cup of butter thoroughly through it; one and a half teaspoonfuls of soda must be dissolved in hot water; put in milk to make it stiff enough to roll out. Butter the dish you are to bake it in (a deep earthen one is best)^ put the dough around the aides, not the bottom, then pour in the chicken, but first thicken the graty. Now put on the top crust and bake. * CANNED PEARS.--Prepare the sirup, allowing one-quarter pound of sugar to a quart of fruit and one pint of pure water. While heating, pare the pears, dropping each one as you pare it into a pan of water to prevent discoloring; let the sirup boil last; place in the fruit carefully and boil until they look clear and pierce easily with a fork. Tour cans must be in hot water in the mean while ; place in the pears and fill to overflowing with the sirup, and seaL To DESTROY CROTON BUGS.--Dis solve two pounds of alum in three or four quarts of water. Let it remain over night -till all the altun is dissolved. Then with a brush apply, boiling hot to every joint or crevice in the closet or shelves where ants, cockroaches, etc., intrude; also to all the pantry shelves and to the joints and crevices of tlld- steads, as bed-bugs dislike it as much as the croton bugs, roaches or ants. Brush all the cracks in the floor and mop- boards. Keep it boiling hot while us ing. We have found Cayenne pepper, however, so effectual for the dispersion of all such vermin that we have had no occasion to try the above. A strong, boiling-hot tea of Cayenne pepper used with a brush, as recommended above and, when dry, the powdered Cayenne blown into rat-holes and cracks, will prove a warmer reception than ants, bugs or rats will wish to try the second time.--Christian Union. HOMB AMUSEMENTS. Simple experiments enliven long evenings at home not a little. We give a few for the benefit of the young folks. A good imitation of the cathedral bell may be produced by suspending a poker by two strings, and inserting the ex tremities of them into the ears. A blow given to the poker will now produce, through the medium of the strings, a sound equal to that of a great bell. This shows that the vibrations to the metallic mass of the poker by the blow are much more readily communicated to the ear by the strings than through the air. Thus, on the same principle, the boiling of a kettle, inaudible in the air, may be distinctly heard, even from the beginning, by resting one end of the poker on the vessel and applying the other to the ear. So, also, the beat ing of a watch placed at one extremity of a long beam of timber may be heard through the timber at the other end of the beam, by a person who holds his ear to the wood, although it is totally inaudible in the air. LIGHT PROVENDER. Modesty is to merit as shades to fig ures in a picture, giving it strength and beauty. A good word is an easy obligation; not to speak at all requires only our silence, which costs us nothing. No man can improve in any company for which he has not sufficient respect to be under some degree of restraint. Hearts may be attracted by assumed qualities, but the affections are only to be fixed by those which are real. The most beautiful nj*yT>e the most admired and caressed, but they are not the most esteemed and loved. What a difference between civilities and acts of real friendship; how easy to obtain the former, and at times how hard to get the latter! Truthfulness is a corner-stone in char acter, and if it be not firmly laid in youth there will always be a weak spot in the foundation. CARE Of TUB COMPLEXION. There-is no artificial method of pre serving the complexion, says an ex change. The way to insure having a proper quantity of healthy blood in the skin is to rise early, to be much in the open air, especially during the hours of sunlight, to avoid overheated, artifi cially lighted^ unventilated rooms, and to retire early to rest. To keep the cells which protect the skin in a natural state, all that is necessary is to wash the surface of the body with soap and water only, or, in the case of some delicate gkina, which the alkali of most soaps irritates, with water alone. Whoever will attend to theses directions will do all that can be done to preserve, as all ought to try and preserve, their skin in the most healthy, a§d». therefore, beau tiful condition. THE next 22d of February promises to be celebrated as usual--by the non- completion of the Washington monu- rnjen*^ ' f- ^ ' • - a THE MTSTERT OF DREAMS. A man fell asleep as the clock tolled the first stroke of 12. He awakened ere the echo of the twelfth stroke had died away, having in the interval dreamed that he had oomBaittcd a crime, was detected after five years, uried and condemned; the shock of finding the halter around his neck aroused him to consciousness, when he discovered that all these events had happened in an in finitesimal fragment of time. Moham med, wishing to illustrate the wonders of sleep, told how a certain man, being a sheik, found himself, for his prid$, made a poor fisherman, that he lived as one for sixty years, bringing up a fami ly and working hard, and how, upon waking up from his long dream, so short a time had he been asleep, that the narrow-necked gourd bottle filled with water, which he knew he overturned as he fell asleep, had not time to empty itself. How fast the soul travels when the is body asleep ! Often when we awake we shrink from going back into the dull routine of a sordid existence, regretting the pleasanter life of dream land. How is it that sometimes, when we go to a strange place, we fancy that we have seen it before? Is it possible that when we have been asleep, the soul has floated away, seen the place and has that memory of it which so surprised us? In a word, how far dual is the life of man, how far not? ^ A QUESTION OB RELATIONSHIP. A sable son of Ham presented him self at the desk oi the marriage-license Clerk of the Probate Court, the other day, and asked for a license to marry his dusky Dulcinea. Among other prob lems propounded him was, "Are you and the lady related?" "Yes.sah!" was the answer. "What relation are you to each other?" was the next query. "Sah?" ejaculated the applicant for matrimonial honors. "I mean what kin are you to each other?" explained the handsome clerk. "We isn't any kin to each other; no kin at all, sah," responded the American citizen of Ethiopian de scent. "But you said you were related," answered the clerk. "I thought you* deluded to de tender relashuns of luv what prevails between us at de present moment," said Scipio; so' he got his license. THE Canadian live-stock shipments to England continue Jieavy, and in creased exportation is anticipated by breeders and shippers during the sea son of 1879. It is estimated on good authority that more than 200,000 cattle and 500,000 sheep are now feeding for exportation in the spring. THE Albany Evening Journal refers to a couple of tramps with hearts that dead-beat as one. Suffering fur a Life Time. Persons afflicted with- rheumatism often suf fer for a life time, their tortures being almost without remission. The joints aud muscles of sncii unfortunates are in most cases shockiagly oonterted and drawn out of shape. To afford them even temporary relief, the ordinary reme dies often prove utterly useless. Hosteller's Stomach Bitters, on the other hand, is avouched, by persons who have used it, to be a genuine source of relief. It keeps the blood cool by promoting a regular habit of body, and removes l'rom it impurities which, in the opinion of all rational pathologists, originate tins agonizing complaint aud its kindred malady, the gout. Besides this the Bitters re medy disorders of the stomach, liver and nerves, prevent and eradi cate intermittent and remittent fevers, promote appetite and sleep, and axe highly recommended by physicians as a desirable medicinal stimulant and tonic. . H. BALDWIN, of Monroe City, Ind., writes under date of Dec. 8, 1877, that hie wife nsed Dr. Tierce's Favorite Proscription with wonder ful results. It effected her entire cure, aftor several physicians had failed. The many simi lar letters positively affirming that the Favorite Prescription had cured the diseases and weak nesses peculiar to women induced Dr. Pierce to sell it under a guarantee. Ladies need no longer submit to useless and painful local treat ment, as the Favorite Prescription is a safe, sure, and speedy cure. .
