If bodies are allowed to be burned on the pro duction of the certificates, which are ac cepted as sufficient in the case of burial, a very wide door will be opened to murder.^ At present the interment of a body is not an absolute bar to further investigation into the cause of death. Examination can be resorted to if any reasonable ground for suspicion pre sents itself, and the presence of poison can be detected long after it has done its work. But cremation would consti tute an absolute bar to further investi gation. A murderer Who could avoid exciting suspicion for a week after death had taken place would be perfectly safe. The body would have disappeared, and the ashes of the victim would tell no tales. It is imperatively nece. sary that, before cremation is allowed, proper provision should be made either for the official examination of all the organs in which ^it is possible to detect traces of poison or for their removal from the body before burning and their preser vation until such time as they cease to serve as possible witnesses to the cause of death. A "sanitary improvement" which made murder any easier than it is would be a very decided change for Mie wai-se. --Fail Mall Gazette. v> AMERICAN MECHANICS. * I have at this moment," writes Mr. Thomas Fletcher in the English Me chanic, "at least three-fourths of my tools ©f American manufacture, many of which have been bought at a very fancy price. If it were not an absolute necessity I should be exceedingly foolish to buy American tools at a high price if English tools were to be bought which would d& the work equally well. From my own practical experience, the difference between the two is, that an English workman does not, in the first instance, learn what a tool is for, and adapt the tool to the requirements; an American workman will, as a rule, use his own brains and make what you want without spoiling the whole by ridicu lous blunders. If I needed a thing, making which required judgment on the part of the workman, and I could not give, my personal and constant supervision, I should, as the simplest way to set the thing right, send the instructions to American* "la raii water all froze v#1~ asked Aunt f>orothy of Jeems, who was trying to break the water in the water-cask on Monday morning.
