" ' Although their products SfiH for much, lower prices than they did a lew years ago, sheep are etill among the most profitable which can be pat upon a farm, but, in order to yield the highest returns of which they are capable, they need to be properly cared for. To Gst Bn> or Mold in Ohllabs.-- Pnt some roll-brimstone into a pan and set fire to it; dose the doors, making the cellar 'nearly as air-tight as possible for two or three hours, when the fungi will be destroyed and the mold dried up. Repeat this simple and inexpensive operation every two or three months, and yon will have your cellars free from all parasitical growth. Evert farmer may Bot^1&» able to reach the maximum of production, yet he can make his land produce what he needs and what an accommodating mar ket will pay him well for, when he has it in excess of home wants. No farmer in the land, however poor his uoil may be at the outset, has any excuse for not making every acre contribute to hid own and the general good. Cabbots form a palatable and nutri tious food for almost every species of stock. They may be given unboiled, mixed with cut hay or straw. There are few things that will better support the horse, while colts are brought into excellent condition when fed with them. To the cow they afford a wholesome food, coloring and flavoring the butter agreeably. The hog eats carrots raven ously, and thrives upon them. T.twn and kerosene are good to keep lice from calves; sulphur mixed with salt is good to drive ticks from sheep. Calves, like all animals, should be kept growing from birth to maturity. Here is one place where the profit comes in. There is always a loss of time and feed and more, too, by allowing young n-TiiimJa to " stand still" for six months or more of the year. Sheep are well clothed, and need shelter from snow and rain, and perhaps from the very strongest winds, but cold agrees with them. Feed them well; give them plenty of water, in small flocks ; keep them dry, and they may stay out in the oold and thrive. A close, dark pen is a poor place for sheep.--Rural New Yorker. In Saxony, where the cold-water sys tem is carried out in large dairies, an apparently-effectual plan has been hit upon to prevent ihe milk " turning" suddenly in tempestuous weather. A thin iron-wire chain is passed through the milk-pans, the lids of which are kept constantly in the cold water. Dr. Fleischman, of Baden, testifies to the practicability of this method, for, he ob serves, authorities on the subject main tain that milk is less sensitive to the electricity of the air than to the tem perature that surrounds it more imme diately. The fact that milk kept in en ameled or tinned vessels is less liable to sour in hot weather is thought to speak well for this new theory. A New Jersey paper says that ninety years ago it was regarded as a settled point that corn in drills gave a larger product than in hills, but that now, after much discussion, it remains unsettled. The remark would not be made by any one who has informed himself on the subject. We have thoroughly tested this question by measuring the results, and find almost uniformly an increase of 25 to 30 per cent, with drill corn over hills, provided the proper distance is given for the plants. It would be easy to obtain a diminished amount from the drills if too thinly planted; or ears of an inferior quality if much too thick.-- Country Gentleman. CoatMON acorns, baked in an oven and ground into flour, are recommended as a particularly valuable food for poultry. Its administration must, however, be at tended by certain precautions, if we desire to get the full effect of its bene ficial action. Acorn-meal undoubtedly encourages the production of eggs; but to secure this the hens must be kept in a warm place and rigidly separated from the cocks. The meal may be given mixed with the ordinary food and in a lukewarm condition. The best plan is to make a paste of the flour with warm water, form this into small loaves about the size of the hand, and again dry them. When required for use, it should be softened in warm water and mixed with the other food in proportion of one part in twelve. The addition of ground egg-shells or crushed bones is an advan tage. Hens thus fed are more assiduous in laying, especially when not allowed to run too freely with the cocks. One uplift bird for every ten hens is quite sufficient, and he should only be allowed access to them twice in the week, and that only in the daytime. The cock birds should have the same diet as the hens, where free laying is the object in view.---The Farmer. DemtwKe JSmmmv. Btainkd Brass.--Whiting wet with "•qua ammonia will cleans brass from and is excellent for polishing faucets and door-knobs of brass or silver. Bakers' Qxnokrbbxad--Th^ee-fourths of a pound of flour, 'one quart of molasses, one-fourth of a pound of butter, one ounce of salerstas, and one ounce of ginger. Worms on Plants.--Worms at the roots of plants can be exterminated by watering with a solution made of fresh lime and water. Use after the lime has fettled* It will improve the plants. Macaroons.--One cupful of hickory- nut meats, pounded in a mortar; one cup of sugar, one egg and a half, and two table-spoonfuls of flour; bake on a greased paper; put very little in a place. Jumbles.--Take four eggs, three cops of sugar, a little nutmeg, a table-spoon- ful of saleratus, a cup of butter. Stir in the flour until it will roll; cut in rounds, with a hole in the center. Boll them in sugar. Queen's Toast.--Out thick slices of baker's bread into rounds or squares and fry to a nice brown hi butter or lard. Dip each piece quickly in boiling water, sprinkle with powdered sugar and cinnamon and pile one upon the other. Serve with a sauce made of powdered sugar dissolved in the juice of a lemon and thinned with a glass of wine. To Wash Silk.--Silk will wash as follows: Mix quarter pound of honey, quarter of a pound of soft soap and a gill of gin; lay each breadth of silk on a wooden table, scrub it well with a brush and this mixture; then dip it suc cessively in two pails of soft water; do not wring it, hang it thus to dry, and iron between paper when sufficiently dry. Stewed Macaroni.--Break the maca roni into pieces an inch long, throw them into boiling water. Boil half an hour and drain. Put into a stew-pan a pint of cream, an ounce qf butter, one well-beaten egg, pepper and salt. Stir over a clear fire till it thickens/ but do not boil. Add the macaroni, boil five minutes, toss in wineglasaful of Madeira, and serve hot. To Itmcp Beefsteaks.--Have the steaks cut about the usual thickness. Mix together some salt, sugar, and some finely-powdered saltpeter. In an earthen jar lay a steak, and sprinkle it with this mixture; put on another, and sprinkle the same as before, and over all turn a plate with a heavy weight on it. This will form a brine of its own, and the meat will keep sweet in this way for a long time. You can take it out to broi in the usual way. This is a very good recipe for people who live away from cities^ Do not let it freeze. THE RETIRING KENTUCKY 8KNATOX. McCreery is one of the most remark able men who has ever been in the Sen ate. Physically he is the most con spicuous member of it. His thin, pipe- stem legs are surmounted by a rotund body, and that in turn is crowned with a head perfectly massive in proportion, perfectly bald on top and fringed with iong, straight, jet-black hair. The face is flat, large and smooth-shaven, and the eyes small and deep-set. He ap pears habitually in a full-dress suit of rusty black, carries his hands in his pants pockets, chew^ tobacco incessant ly, and has the most benignant ex pression of countenance imaginable. He is a modern Pickwick. As a hu morous and pathetic speaker he has no equal in the Senate, and neither Conk- ling nor Blaine command the attention of the Senate in a more marked degree than he has on the few occasions he has vouchsafed to speak. His voice is deep and mellow and his language more pure ^nd simple that of any public speaker of the day. His fund of in formation is inexhaustible, and the play of his imagination delicate and bound less. But for his chronic indolence he would be one of the most noted men in the country. As it is, he is one of the most notable.--Washington Cor. Cin cinnati Enquirer. A SUGGESTION. A sick-room should be kept as quie as possible. In cases of severe illness there is nothing more annoying to the patient than the noise made by pouring coal into a stove to replenish the fire. It is a nuisance in more ways than one; but it can be avoided. A lady requests us to mention the very simple plan of filling a paper-bag or tunnel with coal, and having it in readiness to gently place upon the fire. This is a sugges tion worth heeding, and should be re ceived with thankfulness and acted upon whenever there may happen to be any person sick. The New York Sun says thatacigar- shaped steamer 1,200 feet long, and hav ing engines of 100,000 horse power, is soon to be constructed at some port in England. She is to have a tower 150 feet high, containing in part state-rooms looking out on circular balconies, but having within a hollow cylinder extend ing vertically throughout its entire length and traversed by an immense weight susceptible of being adjusted at any desired height.
