A new Industry lias been developed on the Pacific coast--the manufacture of salt by the evaporation of sea-water. The process is a very simple one. A series of ponds covering eighty acres, and divided Into water tight compart­ ments, has been arranged on the bay shore. In Alameda County, California* The ponds are connected with the bay by a ditch, and the water Is passed Into the upper end of the vats by wind- mil! pumps. From this point it is gradually distributed into the various receptacles below, becoming by evapo­ ration, more and more salty as It ap­ proaches the lower vats. It Is then pumped into other vafs. where It re­ mains until crystalized, and layers of •all half an inch thick are formed. The salt thus obtained is then dried in Heated pans and crushed in mills. Sev­ eral thousand tons are annually made by this method, and sold to San Fran- oisco jobbers, whe formerly were en­ tirely dependent upon foreign sup- .
