Send In your orders and we will keep you waiting but a short time. THE weather Mince oor last has been t warm and pleasant, and contrary to expectations, no storm. The traveling is simply horrible, it being neither ^sleighing nor wheeling. The great | body of suow on th» ground goes off L slow, and without rain will be i long ® time in disappearing. Farmers will of k necessity be late with tliefr sp^ng's jjj work, and the demand for farm Jielp. tl will be great as soon as the weather will permit their going to work. n< -r " THE newspapers are full of the ^ wjekedest stories, of which this Is one: s wOne of the most ludicrous typograph- g ical errors lately reported was from t the substitution of a t4d" for the final s< *'l" in chill. A gentleman on making a ^ trip east left his wife in her usual go&d ®} health, and was surprised In a few days fat the receiptor a telegram announcing *her serious illness. He telegraphed the family doctor for particulars, and received in reply the following: Mrs. B. has had a child. If we can prevent her having another she will do well." MRS. SMITH COLBY and son, of Chi cago. are visiting with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. H. 6. Gregory, in this village HON. O. C. DIGGINS will accept our thanks for a copy of the Illinois Legis lative TMrectory. WHILE at Ricbmolid cfn Monday we noticed that nine cars of stock were shipped from that station on that day. Tliii shows that Richmond has some live men in. the stock business. THE Ashing season will soon be here. Then will the school boy be taken sud denly sick, aud only a .firm grip on a flsh pole, and n nan of bait, will aftord him anjr relief from his misery. WE learn that Mr. Kennebeck, who lives East of this village, has bought the farm of the late J.S. Carter, near Rlngwood. We believe the price paid was #48 per acre. , Is McHenry to have a Base Ball Club the coming Season ? If so now is the time to organize. We have the material for a first-class Club. Ball tossers come to the front. C. H. MOREY is repovted very sick with Inflammatory Rheumatism, and unable to leave his bed. This is a dreadful disease, and Mr. Morey lias the sympathy of all, with a hope tor Ills speedy recovery. A. W. YOUNG. County Superintend ent of Schools, will be at the Public School building, in this village, to morrow. Thursday, to make examina tions of Teachers. All those Interested shonld bear il in mind. THE Board of Auditors of the town of McHenry, met at the Council Room in this village "on Tuesday, finished their business and adjourned. The Supervisor's Financial Statement can be found in full in another column. LOST, between McHenry and Volo, on Monday. March 28, a mink Boa. One dollar reward will be paid to the Under by leaving the same at this office, or at the store of Henry Rogers, Volo. J. D. MCCA.BE. LOST, between the old Tanner Farm, on the Woodstock road, and the resi dence of Martin Boyle, a pair * of new Rubber Boots. The finder will be suit ably rewarded by leaving them at the residence of Martin Boyle or. at this office. AND now another Prophet comes to the front. Dr. Wild, of Canada, pre dicts fifty-three years of war after 1882. With Vennor. Mammy Shipton and this other wild lunatic, the world cannot be expected to last much lon ger. Come and pay op your subscrip tion before it is too late. AT the breaking up of winter some people are apt, on the first warm day, to leave oft their fianiiels. The prac tice is a dangerous one. They should be worn until warm weatlier.is really a settled fact. And that will not be soon if Vendor's last prediction proves true. • . THE Anniial Town Meeting will be held on Tuesday next. The Caucuses are called for Saturday next, when It Is hoped all those Interested will turn out and by their presence and voice signify their preference as to who shall be their candidates to be sup ported for Town officers for the ensu ing year. PsoPLEwho wear thiu-soled shoes from now until warm weather, would do well to make their wills and select their undertaker. '"Died of thin-soled shoes" would be an appropriate epi taph for a great multitude of silly peo ple. Thin shoes, a tight fit and a weak head are generally combined in the same individual. THE Chicago Inter Ocean of Satur day last contained thirty-two pages, the size of four full papers. This shows enterprise and prosperity. It Is. without question, the best Daily pa per published in Chicago, stalwart Re publican in politics, and in the ten years of its existence has gained an enviable reputation as a straight-for ward, reliable newspaper. WE are now open for proposals from any one who wishes to work our garden 4,on shares." We will furnish the old boots, straw hat. spade, hoe, earth, and heaven will throw in the dew and sun shine; all that is required of the party of the third part is the manual, the mus cular, the bone and the sinew, the early rising, the backbone, and--the c|op.--Ex. LAUER A BECKER, the Merchant Tailors, who for the past few years liave had their place of business near the DejK)t, have decided to remove from this place to Kenosha, Wis., and will commence packing their goods for that purpose on Monday next. This decision will be much regretted by their many friends in this place and surrounding country. Since their residence here they have made manv warm friends, both in tjieir business and personally. They are a No. 1 workmen, and the citizens of Kenosha are fortunate In getting them to again locate in that cily. THK remains of" Walter Church, brother-in-law of John S. Wheat. Esq., of Woodstock,- arrived there from Poncho Springs. Col., on Friday last. He was 30 years of age. Monday, the 21st, two men standing near him got into a quarrel. One of them drew a large'revolver with which he struck the other on the head. This discharg ed the pistol and Mr. Church was struck in the right eye and felj dead. The . letter accompanying tlie body says that uo blame is attached to any one on account of his 'death. The fu neral was held in Woodstock on Satur day last, and was attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends. The latest news in regard to our Jong hoped for direct railroad line to Chi cago will lie found In the following from the Lake Get evji, Herald. There seems to be something authentic about this news: For the last month or two rumors of all kinds lun-e been flying about con eernlng the old Northern Pacific Air Line Railroad, now the Portage A Lake Superior Road. Nothing definite could be learned until this last week, when a trade that has been 011 the boards for some time, was finally com pleted. The following friMii the Mil waukee Republican will give our readers an idea of the facts: The Daily Republican recently pub lished an item stating that it had been rumored that the Chicago «fc Superior Air Line had been sold, and that a through line would be eonstructedtrom f'hica o m Lake Superior. This rumor was yesterday verified by reports re ceived in this city. The franchise of the old organization has passed into the hands of an entirely new company, among whom are Mr. J. A. Ludington, a wealthy capitalist of Chicago, who has been elected president of the new organization, and Barnes Bros of New York. The line is already graded from Geneva, in this state to jefler«oii. The laud grant, ol the company, which three railroad companies were striving to gain possessiou'of during the present session of the legislature, thus remains in its possession, as the company's title to it does not expire until May, 18*2; and by that time tlie new roan will probably lie entirely completed. If not. however, a bill will probably be introduced requesting an exteution of the time. T!ie work on the road will begin early in the spring, as the first contracts for the work have already been let. aud all funds necessary have been raised. We had previously written to Rail road Commissioner Turner, asking.him if lie knew anything about the matter and if there was any truth in the rumors we had heard. His reply was as follows: MADJSON, March 11,1881, 'J. EH EG. ESQ: Dear Sir--In reply to yours of the 9th iust.. I would say that A. A, Jack son. Esq., the representative of the Chicago, Portage <& Superior Railroad, informs me that it it the intention of his couipanv to enter upon the con struction of the road the present year, and build a considerable portion of it-- the Land Grant Division of sixty miles southeast from Superior, to receive at tention first, in order to earn the laud grant conferred upon the company be fore its time expires, which will be In May. 1S82. He also Informs me that a loaii for the funds necessary to build the entire road have been secured, aud he lias shown me the agreement of capitalists to furnish the motley Po construct the imad, Of their ability to 1141'uuh the money there is uaquestion. So I"believe It is undoubtedly the In tention of the company to build the road, and I think they have the ability to do it, if I hey are not disturbed by legislature the present session. Thpre are several bills pending. hoWever* which relate to the company's laud grant, that may seriously intefore \vlth Its plans, and defeat its intentious.\ Yours truly, " \ A. J. TUKNEBi The land grants spoken of above, amount In all to841.488 acres already certified to, and 350.000 acres for which • no certificate his yet been Issued.-- There is also In the state treasury 8180,000 in cash, which has been re ceived for trespass on these lands and which will belong to the roa:l whet/ sixty miles are completed. It may be years lief ore we get the road or it may be never, but it is a.consolation to hope for it at any rate. THE NEW DRUG STORE. One door East from J. C- Choate, South Sido, Woodstock. III.
