INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., May 25, 1881 - EDITOR PLAINDEALER:--A week ago 1 left your county to attend the annual gatherings of the Baptist denomina tion of America, to be held at this place. I have found the week to be ot' so much importance that I venture a few lines to your paper. The city itself is one of note, the "Hoosler Capital." They claim for It eighty thousand inhabitant*. It is well laid out, and the houses are of the best kind. Most of the streets cross each other at right angles. The streets are paved with stone and this makes it very noisy. There are some nice little parks In the city limits; one near the business center is circular In form^-Across the street west of this park Is a rather nice brick build ing. It caused some comment) at the last Presidential election. The owner would have been Vice-President had It not be^n for one little Incident--the votes were wanting. Ou the front, iu large letters, is this name--ENGLISH. There is another house here of some iuterest to the traveler--the church where H. W. Reecher preached a ntiui- bjr of years ago; however his old building has given place to a majestic stone edifice, and is now the second Presbyteriau Church of this city. The house of Hon. O. P. Morton* the War Governor, is pointed out, aud his last resting place In the city cemetery. The asylum of the blind is a place of attraction. They have now 105 iu mates. A new State House ts now in process of erection and will be au honor to the State when completed. Religious Interest i's great here just now. The Baptist National Conven tion met here the eighteenth inst., and the house has been thronged day and night since. There Is also a great awakening here among the Methodists. They ttogan some meetings of a reviv- * ********* thousand conversing. ; The ends of the earth me&jn Indian apolis this week. It was given out on Saturday that the Rev. T. DeWit Tal- mage would preach on the Sabbath in Roberts Park M. E. Church at 10£ A. M. To make sure of a seat I went at 9 o'clock. The house was then being rapidly filled. At 10 uostanding rooiu could be had. Having heard so much about this famous preacher of Brook lyn. I expected a great many odd things. Not so this time; his sermon was distinguished for nothing so mucii is It was for great simplicity. At close of the sermon an opportunity was given and hundreds requested prayers. Monday night came R. G. Ingersoil with his lecture on "Great Infidels." The usual throug of the idle and curious greeted him. He in turti greeted thom with the usual amount of irreverent railings and misrepresen tations. Of all the men I have met, this same R. G. Ingersoil is the most overestimated. No one will say that he has no talent, but there is little or nothing solid about the man. Dr. I. S. Kalloch, Mayor of San Fran cisco, is now in the city. I have not heard that he is to speak while here. He looks as well as though lie had never been shot, or passed through such scenes of trouble. Of course this remarkable week would not have been complete with out Beecher. so he is now on hand and is to lecture to-night in the Park Theater. This closes these great things. The Baptist meetings close this evening.
