KDUCATTOICAL COLUMN Oomworm) bt S. D. BttDwnr. Next Saturday* Oct. 15,1881, at Nun- da, m. H. R Baldwin was obliged to close MSMIIOOI at Crystal Lake •n aoooant of poor health. Mr.'Vrooman, of Marengo, made m a short call last week to ascertain the .Condition of our blackboards. t.;V ' \,t r*: r ' r * A £ m. Olirer Wendell Holmes Is seventy two years old and still hale and hearty. He Is slightly deaf but otherwise seems to be in fall possession of his mental powers. Next Saturday at Nunrtft there will be ft teachers1 meeting commencing at ten o'clock, k. M. Supt. Young will present the subject of reading; J. A. Sheldon, square and cube roots; H. R. Baldwin, political Geography, and Prof. Estee, school government. While the programme is short yet others are expected to take part |n the exercises so as to make the meeting interesting and profitable. One week from to-day (Wednesday) ts the one hundredth anniversary of the surrender of the British to the American? and French at Torktown. Va„and quite extensive preparations are being made t-> celebrate the day and the event. Quite a number of prominent French ofBclals ftave ar rived and more are expected. Teach ers can Impress their pupils with the importance of the event by having special exercises that day upon the plaoe and circumstances of the surren der. Some scfcoeil children down In Missis sippi have asked Jeff Davis to write a school history ot the United States, and the old man talks as though he wonld do so. Our present school histories do not present Jell Davis and the South In compli mentary terms, it Is true, but most of the authors haw been as generous as the foots would allow. However, with nnnserons and woll patronised common schools through the South, another re bellion As impoeslble (hough all their histories tMCk the doctrine of "state rights.** , There Is a good deal of torse com mon sense in these extracts from the Hawkeyft advice to young men: * Remember, my son, you have to work. Whether you handle a pick or a pen, a wheelbarrow or a set£of books, dig ging ditches or editing a paper, ring ing an Motion beH or£writing funny things, you must work. If you will look around you, you will see that the men who are most able to work are the men who work the hardest. *• Don't be afraid «f killing yourself with overwork, son. Men seldom word so hard as that on the sunny side of thirty. They die sometimes but it Is because they quit work at § p. u. and don'tgethomenntll9A. M. It's the Intervals that kill, my son. The work gives you an appetite for your meals, is lends solidity to your slumber. It gives you a perfect and grateful appre ciation of a holiday. There are young men who don*t work my son; young men who make a living by sucking the end of a cane, and who can tie a necktie In eleven different knots and never lay a wrinkle in It, who can spend more money in a day than you can earn in a month, son, and who will go to the sheriff's to boy a postal card, aud apply at the office of the Street Commissioners for a mar- rige license. "So find out what you want to be end to do, and take off your ooat and make success In the world. The busier you are the less evil you will be apt to get Into, the sweeter will be your sleep, the brighter and happier your holidays, and the better satisfied will the world be with you." For years no one has supposed that a lamp of soft coal, dug from ita mine or bed in the earth, possessed any oth er purpose than that of fuel. It was next found that it would afford a gas that was combustible. Chemical anal ysis proved it to be made of hydrogen. In process of time mechanical and chemical Ingenuity devised a plan of manufacturing this gas, and applying It to the lightening of buildings and dties on a large scale. In doing this other products of distillation were de veloped, until, step by step, the follow ing Ingredients are extracted from It: 1. An excellent oil to supply light houses, equal to the best sperm oil at lower, cost. 1. Benzole--a light sort of ethereal fluid, which evaporates easily, and, combined with vapors or moist atr, is used for the purpose of portable gas-lamps, so called. 3. Nap. tha--a heavy fluid, useful to dissolve gutta-percha, India-rubber, etc. 4. An excellent oil for lubrloating purposes. 6. Asphaltum, which is a black, solid substance, used In making varnishes, covering roofs and covering over vaults. 6. Para A3 ne--a white crystal line substanoe, resembling white wax, which can be made into beautiful wax' candies; U melts at a temperature of 11® degrees, end affords an excellent light.
