It maybe said that President Arthur's message Is the first document •f the sort In forty yeara that has not teferred to the South as a distinctive Mctlon of tbe country. In the appoint- tient of Dr. Adams, of Marengo, ywe nre particularly gratified, for the Mason thai his opponents have spared no t>*ins to abuse both him and his friends during the entire canvass. Mr. Adams Is a staunch and reliable Re publican, an old soldier, and that he has been rewarded for his past services we think Is proper and right, and that he will make - a postmaster that Marengo and his many friends else where will feel proud of, no one who knows him will for a moment doubt. The motive impelling the act of a certain young man. whose years are far In advance of his discretionary powers, attempted to play the role of -smarty." one evening last week, by throwing the blinds belonging to the Baptist Church, which had been newly painted and pliced under the shed to dry, out tn a promiscuous pile, hand ling them in no careful manner, mere ly for the sake of giving yent to his malicious spi;e. Such conduct coming from a young man who with ballot In hand for two or three years past has walked boldly up to the polls and de posited his vote, calling himself a man Is certainly deserving of a leather medal, or a life size chromo of Gulteau Clerical Dignity, of which mention was made some two weeks since. Is constantly meeting with some hair breadth escape. This time he made the attempt, in -groping his way through the darkness to his room, to pass in by going on both sides of the door at otice, which was standing part way open.
