O^GEKWOOO- EDITOR PLAINOEALER: -- Centuries "go, sages tell n*, there were two ri val* who sought to obtain the key* of fleaven and Hell. Each claimed to be true and infallable, which greatly puzzled the good people So much so that they knew not what course to pursue. That same spirit of rivalry ha* been handed down along through time to our present age. Positions of "Fame." "Honor*' and, "Trust." impor tant or le*» important, (whose votaries are legion) all recieve their occupants through and by opposition and rivalry. The question of the present dry is not, many times, who is best qnallfled to fill this or that position, but who will carry th* most votes. The masses as a rule follow the few. Lo cally in positions of less importance, this spirit of rivalry avd opposition often arise* from personal prejudices, or to vent some personal spite of some particular individual, who takes par ticular pains to peddle his misrepre sentations to accomplish hit object. This spirit, possessed by the ancient father will no doubt be demonstrated in more than one locality during the present week. We, personally, have no aspirations or desires to gratify in this direction, farther than to act pro bond publico. D.
