FOR two Sunday evenings In succes* sion a man by the name of Hunt has advertised »o lecture on Temperance, In the Unlversalist church in this vi'„ I age, but lias both times failed to put In an appearance. Whether he exacted someone'was gtlng to hunt for him when the time came to open the lec ture, or whether he meant It for a huge joke, we know not. but hear the words "dead be*t" used in connection with his name quite often on our streets, and we are of the opinion this Is not f«r frora correet. •' •-.-Ji-u-- -- i. „• v m i- • i- WE learn that the Janesville Light Guard Band, said to be one of the best Quadrille Bands in the 8tate of jWls* consiu, have been furnishing mu*lc for parties iu the western part of this coun ty and in the edge of Wisconsin, and have given such universal satisfaction that the dancing public are completely carried away with them. As McHenry alvays "takes the cake" on dancing, we hope that at the next gathering of this kind the Janesville Light Guard Band may be secured, so that we may be able to judge for Oursel ves. • • , OUR citizens should not forget- the entertainment for the benefit of the Cemetery, which takes place at River side Hall on Thursday and Friday eve ning of next ^ireek. the 27th and 28th, at which time Mrs. Jarley, with her wonderful collection of wax figures will be present. R, Brearly. of Detroit, Michigan, a Urge photograph of a gem ot scenery near the Glen House in the White Moun tains, and any one who desires to in« spect it will find it adorning the aanctum 4-cmctorvm of this paper. This is one ef the scores of Interesting plaees visited by the popular annual excursions "From Detroit to the Sea," via the Grand Trunk Railroad and St; Lawrence River Steamers, and In dicate the character of acenery along this popular route of summer pleasure trivel. These excursions have been carried on successfully for the past six years and are each under tbo per sonal management of Mr. Brearly, from whom a circular ol particulars can be obtained by addressing him enclosing one three cent stamp, or by sending thirty cent* for illustrated guide book. " Wjs copy the .following from the Woodstock correspondent of the Rich mond Gazette. It will be remembered by iftftfty yonr readers that Mr. Jones, while act ing as Deputy Post Master in this city, about a year ago. left suddenly, and after lie had Iveen gone some days it was discovered that there was five- or six hundred .lollfirs short in the post office. Mr. Jones states to Marshal Ringiand that after leaving here he went into the State of Kentucky where he had been living ii|> to a short time previous to his appearance at Knox- ville. hut the thoughts of his family and the way he had left theui so prey ed upon his mind that he decided to giveiiimxeif up. He says that just, before lie was taken into custody he imagined that he was being pursued and ran tp the bank of the river where two meti told him to jiuiip into their boat and they wjotild take him over. He jump ed, but the boat IxMng purely imagin ary lie went into the river, and on get ting out was soon seen on the railroad track, soaking wet by the men who took him in charge, to whom he told ,th'e story ot his imoe?zieuteut and also that he iud drowned a man (one in tlie boat) In the river. Hence the confes gion of murder which was telegraphed to Chicago. Jones states that lie had been working here for South worth for frou».g& to S? per week and trying to support his family on that amount, and they being in nearly a destitute condi tion he Siad used money in small amounts to meet everyday expenses, intending to charge it up at the end of t'te month until tne amount was so large that detection must, come soon and he dew to escape It. It is well known here that lie edited the Sentinel, read nearly all the proofs a*>d did pretty much ail the work of running the post office frequently eating his meals, a mouth ful at a time, while waiting on the pat rons of the office, and for some time trying to support his family on the muui licent sitm of seven dollars a week which was the highest wages ever paid him by o*ir liberal hearted P. M. and proprietor of the "leading Republican paper in McHenry Co." Is it any won der he used money that did not belong to him* There is one tiling that we are certain of, and that is that while no one claims he did righr(he says him self he did not) lie has the sympathy of every one In this city--with perhaps two or three exceptions--who are con versant with the matter. There are many more circumstances connected with this aflair that would hardly be proper for us to slate now, that will be brought out iiLgood time* yj--..r-=eiiB; wr~ Hislatice^ wlio bid shoulder a sack of coffee like that jnder, and carry it across the floor aud Iver lot it down." From the Elgin Daily News On the board of trade Monday butter dropped to 33 cents, aud at that figure every sale was effected. The cause of so great a decline in a week |was |due to a telegram from New York • which read something like tnlf: "The large receipts of new butter and the abun dance of the artificial article has fright ened buyers and mads a great demor alization. It does not seem to be so muoh of a question of price aa to who sliall sell out first." The telegram gave the price of Saturday as 33 cents, atjd that governed the board of trade tran sactions. The local causes here help the fall. Roads are getting better every day and more dairy batter Is coming iu from the country.
