It Is prob- - able that the end cannot be far of at ' the longest. " HTCongmwman Hopkins is being i favorably mentioned as the Republican 'shfi candidate for Governor in '96. There j, are many reasons why he should benom- V.v-iaated, and none why he should not. He A is capable and popular, an able states man, a skilled politician and has a most its I excellent, pnblic record. He is pre-eminent- l ' ly qualified for the position; and this section of the state is entitled to the place on the ticket. --Geneva Republican. ; MT When Mr. Cleveland was notified of his nomination last summer he said: "Lst us tell the ped|>l© plainly and honestly what we believe and how we ; propose to serve the interests of the , whole country." Mr. Cleveland has writ ten a number of letters and delivered "a number of speeches since then but he seems to have forgotten that promiw. He has not once intimated "plainly and : honestly what he believes or how he pro poses to serve the whole country."--/?*. ; - gr- : W: •• i&k- ' - ft.;"" NT* The official canvass of the vote of Illinols'lias been made. It shows the fol lowing majorities: Cleveland, 29,173; Altgfld, 22,480; Black (over Willits), 27,715; Hunter (over Yates), 26,208; Gill, 22,604; Hi n rich sen, 21,597; Gore, 23,801; Ramsey, 35,721; Maloney. 21,- 036. The total prohibition vote for president was o3,478; for governor, 22,950. The total People's party vote for president 22,087; for goveenor, 18,: 139. The canvass also shows that 54 counties went Democratic and 48 Repub lican on the presidential vote. iSTTheNew York Press has secured the opinion of two-thirds of the new Congressmen on the tariff, the silver question, and an extra session. On the tariff 164 members favor a repeal of the McKinley law and four are opposed; ninety-foar want a new session of Con gress and fifty-fonr are opposed; 101 want a free silver law and forty-seven do not. Among the Illinois Congressmen interviewed only one, Mr. Busey, is op posed to the repeal of the McKinley law. and he was not r» elected. The Demo crats from the South and West generally favor an extra session, and Mr. Cleveland will no doubt stand by the majority, even if he is opposed by his intimate friends and advisers in the East. NT The truth is coming slowly to the front. The New York Sun declares that it was the "force bill" and not. the tariff that elected Cleveland. The Memphis Avalanche admits this and then denies that the Sun bad an influence in crying against the force bill. "The fact is," says the A valanche, "that the New York Sun has about as much influence in the^outh as the Arizona Kicker, and as for Charles A. Dana making the South solid with the force-bill issue there is no truth in it." The South is hidebound in its Democracy. It is for the Democratic ticket because it has compelled the Democratic party to come around to the old doctrines of the South before the war, and there was no occasion for Mr. Dana's help. The Chi cago platform made the South solid be- caribe the South made the platform. 1ST Of the thousands of comments made on the life and character of Jay Gould by the press all over the world there is hardly one in praise. Hecreated nothing, de destroyed the happiness of thousands. Cyrus W. Field created the Atlantic cable and the elevated railroad system. Jay Gould robbed him as be did other men. He profited by the result of the genius of others. His was the genius of the highwayman. There are thousands in want because of bis success, thousands wh» feel safer in their prop erty and happiness that he is under ground. There are no mourners outside his small family, where be was kind. Is that a successful life? The Hindoo priest at the birth of a child says: "Little one, thou comest into the world weeping while all around thee smile. §o live that thou may go hence smiling while all around thee weep." No one weeps that Jay Gould has gone. Will the lesson be learuetl by his successors, who have con trol of his enormous fortune? % ' Vltl >rk anti-snappers aW» in A fair way towards making a heap of trou lor Mr. Cleveland. g If Mr. Cleveland was aware Of the in sult put upon Speaker Crisp by the New York Reform Club, the guests ot which they both were, he has forfeited all right to be considered a broad-gauge man, and if he was a party to it, as some profess to believe, be deserves only the contempt of honorable men of all politi cal belief. Congress? Oh yes; by referring to the calendar we find that the second session of the Fifty-second Congress convened on the 5th insi.' It'isn't a good practice to give advice to crowned monarchs--when they want it they should be made to pay for it; but ii Emperor Wiltfam really wanted a rac ing yacht that could win races he should have placed the order over here, instead ot England. The Russians do not like Sarah Bern hardt because she is a Jewess. They have yet to learn that there is neither cree 1 nor nationality in art genius, both of which wayward Sarah possesses. Canada has in three months paid near ly $33,000for her discrimination against American veeseis in the Weil and Cacal, and this is only the beginning, unless she gets down from her high horse. Th® farmers and farm laborers of Europe seem to be in a fair way to have to choose between starvation and fight ing. Americans do not half appreciate their advantages over the rest of the world. The intimation of Carl Schnra that all the honest men in the country voted for Mr. Cleveland came with bad grace from a man who has spoken on all sides of all questions; and always for a cash-price. Congressman Tom Johnson, of Ohio, who proudly proclaims himself a free trader, was allowed to speak in the pres ence of the mighty Grover, but Speaker Crisp was ruthlessly gagged. Speaker Crisp's "cinch" on the speaker ship of the next House appears to be in a badly damaged condition. Yes; Cleveland end Hill will probably "come together" in the near future; but the indications are that the meeting will be on the Corbett--Sullivan order. Revenge is as sweet to the politician as to other people. When Speaker Crisp was elected it was given out asatriumph of Hill over Cleveland. It will not b* strange to find Mr. Cleveland workinv to turn the thing around when the next Speaker iB elected. "The apotheosis of political impud ence" is what Senator Sanders, of Mon tana, calls the appointment of the com mittee to interfere with the election of U S. Senator in bis own and other States, by a caucus of democratic Senators. A majority of the democratic members of the next House may believe that Mr Crisp ought to be re-elected Speaker: but if a vote for him is to put th«m in bad odor with the man who is to dish out the federal pap, lota of them will not cast that vote. It is said that home-life is now consid ered very unfashionable in New York So are the virtues which make the most beautiful part of home-life. It has come at last. A New York paper recen" ly printed as news a column from G. Washington's farewell address. O, we are progressive, at war. ed by the saoif noted artist who did the "Roses." You will be delated with it. How Masai Women Dress. "The Masai women are very interest ing. They wear no dress except a fu'l cow-hide fastened over the shoulder and another around the waist; but they were fairly loaded down with coils of brass and iron wire, which formed earrings, legletd, collars and armlets, often amounting to a weight of forty, fifty and even sixty pounds. Those wbo can. not afford to wear the heavy coils, wear as many of the lighter bracelets as they can procure. The higher the rank of the woman, the more of this sort of jewelry she wears; which betokens the fact that Fashion has her slaves even in Central Africa. The Masai women are tall, gannt and bony, but not well developed, prob ably owing to their wearing so much heavy jewelry while growing. They aie very fleet and strong, and are the pur veyors of the tribe; allowed to pass un molested everywhere, even in times of war ."--From "Bebe Bwana" in Demor est's Family Magazine for January- The Wealth of the Country. It is a very alluring statement the President makes in bis message when be says the total wealth of the country is $62,619,000,000, and has increased 287 per since 1860. The figures are enorm ous, and the temptation presented to th" average Americans is to swell with pride and exultation. But, before in dulging too much in swelling, it would be wis8 for the average American to ex amine the statement a little. It is quite true, so far as we know, that there is that amount of wealth here. The chanc «• are, indeed, considering, the secretive- MM of certain classes--when the statis tician comes around--that the amount Is understated. But it is misleading to •peak of it as the wealth "of the country. The country does not own a dollar of it It all belongs to individuals. The coun try, as such, has no great amount of wealth. It is in danger at times of be- eon^ng bankrupt unless the tax-payers eome up promptly, for it is supported by the tax-payers. Moreover, whpt wealth the country happens to have is not in eluded in 'he amount given by the Presi dent. It is all individual money, every of it. has yet mentioned Senator •a a e i 8- * 11 I * I S s I GO JS W to © 53 E 8 t I 1 * 00 K GO 55 < Oi &* o ft PS •< I J ! § Xi w g a An honest Swede tells his story as plain but unmistakable language for the benefit of the public. "One of my child ren took a Bevere cold and got the croup I gave her a teaspoon of Chamberlain's (tough Remedy, and fn five minutes later I gave her one more. By thin time she had to cough up the gathering in her throat, Then she went to sleep and slept good for fifteen minutes. Thenshe got up and vomited; then she went back to bed and slept good for the remainder of the i ig'it. She got the croup the second i ight and I gave the same remedy with same good results. I write this because I thought there might be some one in the same need and not know the true merits of this wondeful medicine."
