Remember the date and be on hand. THE Chicago Journal is still receiving compliments on eyery side for its semi centennial edition. The "old reliable" deserves them all too. The Jo urnal bears its years well. Although half a century old it shows no signs of fossilising but on the contrary is brighter to-day than ever. Like wine it improves with age. COMMENTING on the pending bill before the British Parliment against "open-air advertising," The Art Amateur for May pertinently asks what has become of the similar act introduced into the New York Legislature, justly adding that it would be little short of a miracle, however, if such a measure should become a law, for •What is there in it for Tammany ?'" 85? ag>pointed at the meet ing on Thursday eveofng of last week, t* negotiate with the Bluff City Noveltg Company, in relation to securing the' location of their manufacturing plant in this village, met representatives of said company on Friday, and came to a per fect understanding and agreement and the writings were drawn up and sent to the company on Monday for their signature. Of course the only draw back now is whether or not the specified amount can be raised. As soon as the papers are received back active operations in this line will be commenced, and it will then be very soon demonstrated whether or not we are to have a manufacturing plant located here. It now rests entirely with the people, and as we confidently believe this is an honorable and upright firm, and that the amount to be raised is comparatively small, it is deeerving of the careful and candid consideration of every citizen who has the good of our town at heart. As soon as the prelimi naries are completed we shall have more to say In relation thereto. THE SHOE FACTOSY. The Shoe Factory meeting which was advertised for Saturday evening was a failure on account of the storm, but was held on Monday evening. H. S. Schwind of the firm of Nelson & Schwind,Chicago, was present and presented a proposition to the citizens as to what they would re- quire to induce them to locate here. After the matter was discussed by different parties present, the meeting adjourned to Thursday evening, when it is hoped more of our business men will turn out. On Thursday evening, if it is deemed practicable, a committee will be appointed to see what can be done to ward raising the bonus and if so to make proper arrangements with the parties. OUB NEW SCHOOL HOUSE. The preliminaries for letting the con tract for building the new School House have all been satisfactorily completed and workmen wilt commence excavating for the foundation to-day, Wednesday. It is to be built of McBenry bride and finished in a style second to none. This is what McHenry has long needed and with a good graded school we shall not be obliged to send our children away in the future. The contractor, Mr. Light- heart, comes highly recommended, and we have no doubt will do a job that will be acceptable to the Board. Jos. J, FKETT, head salesman for the firm of Viles & Bobbins, successors to Underwood & Co., Packers and Jobbers of Provisions, Chicago, has put us under obligations for his kind remembrance, which came to us by express a few days since. We can assure him that his kind ness is duly appreciated, and will be re membered with pleasure in all time to come. Mr. Frett has been connected with the Packing House of Underwood & Co. for many years, and his services have become a necessity to that institu tion, as a more faithful and honest busi ness man cannot be found in the state, and the firm have acted wisely in retain ing his services. His position is a respon sible one and he fills it with honor to himself and for the best interests of the firm be represents. He has many warm friends in this vicinity, who are always glAd to leanj of his prosperity. /GEO. E. CHAPELL, of Chicago, has been ftiaking some good improvemepts at his Rummer residence, at Pistaqua Bay. Not only lor his own benefit but which j will be a benefit to every resident on hip side of the lake. Being on the highest point on the Bay he has put down a 60 foot drive well, erected a large wind mill, As will be seen by an advertisement, to | nT1(] up a tank that will hold about 130 barrels of water. He has a system of water works that will furnish water for himself and for the use of all his Neighbors, in sprinkling lawns and other ses. It is a fine improvement, and one jhich will be highly appreciated by all summer residents there, and Mr. Chapell is deserving of great praise for his public spirit in this matter. F WE were WiMtML on Sptatday nigh? with one of ths most eater* thunder storms that bas been known here for years. The rain came down in torrents, the lightning was terrific, and taken all in all it was a terrible night. We have. J»ofr~aS^yetrTaard ol any particular damage being done in this section. ANYONE may easily calculate lor him self how many shingles are needed to cover a given space. As a rule, a thous and shingles, laid with four inches ex posed to the weather, will cover 100 square feet of surface, and five pounds of shingle nails will fasten them on. With a foot-rule and five minutes figur ing any one can ascertain the expense of a new roof. A ME BE tattler or busybody, who tells the faults of others for the love of gossip or for the pleasure received, is simply despicable. No more contemptible, dis honorable, vile Mid disreputable person exists than one who can hatch out dam nable carnards, and use them through envy, jealousy or malice against some innocent person. Such a person has no good motive, and is not wdrthy of re spect and confidence. There is a distinc tion between a tattler and one who in forms for the purpose of doing good and to prevent wrong. THE announcement is made that the seventeen-year locusts are due again this year, and that we may expect a formid able invasion. If we remember correctly, this announcement has been made al most every year for the last twenty years. There appears to be successive generations of these locusts, and each choosee a different year for its wander ings. They have ceased, however, to be a terror, for their enemies include every species of birds from fly catchers to hawks, the chipmunks and squirrels, and last but not least the iBherman, who finds them the ideal bait. Fatally Shot. John Kasten, who resides at Cuba, about eleven miles northeast of Dundee, was fatally shot by Deputy Sheriff Frank Adamek,of Algonquin, Wednesday night. It appears that Adamek, accompanied by Chas. Wandrack and Eugene Andrus, were in pursuit of an Algonquin burglar, and upon hearing that he was secreted at Kasten's went there and demanded admittance. Kasten, who had a consid erable sum of money in the house, thought the intruders were burglars and denied them admittance, upon which the officers started to force the door. Kas ten opened fire. Adamek returned the complement with a revolver shot that proved too effectual. The latter was hit but fortunately a suspender button pre vented serious injury. Kasten, it is thought will die. He is well known in this vicinity, a married man, fearless and violent of temper.--Hawkeye. Bsal Estate Transfers. In many cases the habit of the former is just as strong as that of the latter, and just as hard to break. It has been fre quently demonstrated that the drinking of ice water is an acquired habit, and not one that comes naturally. Give an infant ice water and you will notice by its action that the drink is very distaste ful. It usually has the same effect upon an Indian or upon a person not accus tomed to it. Besides, it is very un healthy, and any person who caa avoid drinking ioe water should do so. ,* , GOING* TO SEE DB. HOWE. Judging from the number of patients who have placed their cases in the hands of the great Specialist, it would seem that there are few who enjoy perfect health, except it be the doctor himself. Yet he complains of having lost bis appetite while on the Pacific coast last winter, s|ill he is a picture of health and it is to be hoped that he, together with nearly one hundred patients here, may yull through. j AT a regular meeting of the Village Board, held on Monday evening, the following appointments were made for the coming year: Marsha's, John Welsh and Mat Neisen; Street Commissioner, Wm. Schreinerj Treasurer, Geo. G. Smith; Village Attorney, H. C. Mead, Board of Health, Dr. O. J. Howard, ^nton Weber. L. E. Bennett THE Lakeside Hotel, Fox Lake, S. E. This Hotel is one of the finest at the Lakes, being beautifully located, finely furnished and kept in a style second to none. Nothing will be left undone by the proprietor and manager to make it pleasant for all pleasure seekers and the public generally who may give them a call. WE can endorse every word of the following, from the Marengo Jtepublican: "Of all the low, contemptible, brainless, bard-hearted wretches in the world the person who will steal flowers is the lowest. Last year beautiful flower beds were despoiled of their contents a number of times; this year this flend without soul, this pharisaical admirer of the flowers is again abroad. How anyone can so de grade themselves to such a contemptible, debasing act is almost beyond compre hension. A person who is a lover of flowers would never steal them from the one who had cared for them until they were in bloom."
