Senator, it seems to be the general • f&pinion in this section of the State that A the Senator is to come from Chicago, the Hon, Wra. E. Mason is the man %bose name alone should be considered. His brilliant campaign, earnest and elo quent exposition of the protective prin ciple, and valiant defence of American interests on the stump, at his own per sonal sacrifice, coupled ^ith his well >' ij known ability to All the placie, weigh fctrongly in hie favor. Yet we distinctly remem ber that the Democrats were crying not many years ago that a surplus in the •national treasury was a very bad thing. . It should be borne in mind, also, that ,• the government paid off $259,000,000 of -Jlijthe national debt while Harrison was president, thus reducing annual interest "Charges f12,000,000. But under Cleve- land the debt has already been increased $50,000,000 by an issue ot b>ndf», and .now is to be increased $50,000,000 more In the same way. Again, under Harrison the receipts were always in excess of ex penditures, 'while under Cleveland the ffovernme-jt has spent $70,000,000 or 3$80,000,000 more than it has received. It is not wise for any Democratic pa yer to print figures which may provokea •Siomparison between the financial histor- -*tee of the Cleveland and Harrison ad ministrations. 'MP" IE AND BRAIN. A. J. Hopkins, of the AuK»tt^ktrjfast, is just now prominent as a candidatethe Republican nomina tion tor Governor. The congressman boasts a splendid head of fiery red hair, and to that physical peculiarity be owe* his first prominence on the floor cf con gress. % It was back in the days when Carlisle was speaker of the house. He had left Washington for a tew days aud*'Sunset" Oox, ot immortal memory, had been call ed to the chftir. Hopkins, along with a hundred or more congressmen, was engaged in a daily struggle to catch the speaker"! eye and secure unanimous consent lor the passage of a private bill affecting only the people of his own home town. For a week the young Illinois congress man had clamored vainly for recogni tion. Finally, one morning Acting Speaker Cox left the chair for a moment and came down on the floor of the house. Mr. Hopkins approached him. "Mr. Speaker/' said the Illinois man, "take a good look at me. I have been trying to catch yonr eye every morning for two weeks. I wish you'd get my features so clearly in your mind's eye that you couldn't help seeing me wh$n 1 get up to-morrow." The wit of the house laid one hand on Hopkins'shoulder. "I'd know ^our red head," he said, "anywhere iu the world. Do you know, Hopkins, the first girl I ever fell iu love with had hair exactly the shade of yours. For her sq,ke I will recognize you to-mor- row morning." Cox was as good as hi* word. When next morning came fifty or sixty con gressmen were on their feet trying to catch the speaker's eye. But "Sunset" simply waved them into silence and said: "The gentleman from Illinois--Mr. Hopkins."--Chicago Mxil r »/<•• 1894. WEDNESDAY. From Gov. Waite, fb-K ' whom nothing but gore would satisfy,to C#4'.' the long-whiskered Pfeffer, who wanted to destroy the present system of govern or, ' ment, nothing will do for these crack brained theorists but a general upheaval $t! c^jr of society and the adoption of the craziest H;notions that ever found lodgment in •X'human brains. COTTON AND FOLI'llO*. ^ S. N. Noble, of Anniston, Alabama, has taken the pains to collect from the rec ords of the New York cotton exchange the prices of cotton during the years when the Republicans and Democrats have been in majority in the house of representatives. Here are his figures : In 1872, when Grant was elected presi dent, the House stood 88 Democrats to 203 Republicans. The price, of cotton advanced 27 cents in New York. In 1874 the House changed from 88 Democrats to 181 Democrats, making a Democratic House. Cotton declined to 18% cents. In 1876 the House stood crate to 137 Republicans. clined to 13% cents. In 1878 the House stood crats to 124 Republicans. clined to 12 3-16 cents. In 1880 Garfield was elected. The House stood 152 Republicans and 130 Democrats. Cotton advanced to 13% cents. In 1882 the Honse stood 200 Demo crats to 119 Republicans. Cotton de clined to 12 cents. In 1884 Cleveland was elected. The house stood 184 demotrats to 140 Re publicans. Cotton declined to 11^cents Iu 1886 the house stood 170 demo- orats to 151 Republicans. Cotton went to 9 9-16 cents--Cleveland boom prices. In 1888 Harrison was elected. The house stood 150 democrats to 178 Re publicans, a Republican honse, and cot ton advanced to 11% cents. In 1890 the house stood 235 demo crats and 88 Republicans. The price went to 6% cents. > ? p^n that was sent Mr. Cleveland to be uas'd in figning the Democratic tariff bill. CU vtland will fiud the financial ques tion qnite as heavily charged with politi cal dynamite as the tariff was. Somebody may find those popgun bills loaded, and if they are taken oat of the Senatorial pigeon holes somebody may get hurt). Chas. A. Dana has at last found ont that it was a case of wrinkles in the working man's stomach. Congressman Springer has turned up at Washington with his talking appara tus in good condition. There is one bad thing about a perma nent commission to investigate strikes. Somebody would always be trying to get up a strike, in order to make the mem bers of the commission earn their salary. fY»l Riwlfinriilmi nil] try mok# ft living as a public lecturer, bis first sub ject being "Ten years among Tariff Re formers." He would be more likely to make a hit by lecturing on "Ten Years of Hypocrisy." 1 There seems to be a disposition in parts of Kentucky to revive the brutal pastime of fighting bloody street ba ttles. It is to Wall street and not to Wash ington, that you must go, if you wish to ascertain the financial intentions of this administration. Objector Holman has recovered his wind sufficiently to talk abont what struck him and where he was hit. The defeated Populist aspirants for seats in Congress are open to proposals for the promulgation of a new crop of isms. Senator Brice expresses his opinion of Cleveland with all the abandon of a man who has no pull on the pap mill. Southern Republicans of a certain class --they are well known--should be rele gated to the rear at once if the party ex pects to retain what it has won in that section. Cleveland's second administration will be' remembered for its bond issues if for nothing else. The principal source of trouble in all co-operative schemes is man's inherent disposition to get the big head. It seems incredible that the adminis tration should have pigeon-holed Admi ral Walkers report on Hawaii and Haw aiian affairs after sending him over thera to make it. But that is just what has been done.. The report don't agree with Blount's. Cleveland may not be loved to the ex- tent be was a few years ago, for the enemies he has made, but he is probably loved, by a few capitalists, for the bonds he has issued. There are a lot of newspaper men in Washington who will require corrobora tion before making use of any more of Secretary Carlisle's positive statements. One hundred millions borrowed in the coarse of about nine months. Isn't that a financial record which ought to make every Democrat bide himself ? And yet, the country is told that Cleveland is am bitious of giving the country more les-, sons in finance. s f* XU,'; ^V is ItJned Vests for l«dlef vt • « a full line of Underwear of all kinds VBoee KTbbed Flee soon be gone. mike ik ;m move rig up, *od t%e fclgg<»8t stocfc iii iown. People are beginning to recognize the fact that we have a great University in the state as was shown by the large number of prominent men in attendance from *11 over the country. Dr. Draper, the newly elected president, is a men of remarkable executive ability, and the name he has gained as a lawyer and as State Superintendent of Schools of New York indicates that the trustees iqade no mistake when they elected him to his present position. The beginning of his administration will nu doubt mark a new era In the progress of the Uni versity. The new Engineering Hall is the hand somest in the country, and while it may at this time call attention especially to the excellence of the Engineering Colleges : yet it must not be forgotten that the | other college courses offered are equally good. The school has had a remarkable! growth. From but sixty-five engineering Studfnts fifteen years ago the number has swelled to nearly five hundred this year. The University authorities are do ing their best to make the University of Illinois the peer of any institution in the land and with the support of the State Legislature and the loyal citizens of Illi- • aois it may be done. 19 Illinois is becoming somewhftt fn- terested in the Speakership of Congress. Several Illinois Congressmen are being talked of as possibili||es, should thle choice ot the new congress come west Among those mentioned in this con nection in Illinois political circles are Congressman Cannon of the Danville dis trict; Congressman Hopkins, Of the Aurora district, and Congressman Hitt.
