COTTAGE ORGAN CO, Li ** ̂ i ̂ i-V*' "pp. m^̂ U êloprn̂ t ' ;* " Within» Few y«wfc coThparatirely a 'few yfctftr "irttM* the Chicago Cottage Organ Co. was wwlring organs in limited numbers only, in a,small factory at the corner of Awn and Randolph Ste. The btipi- neew soon ontgrew the factory, when the present site was decided upon at 22nd and Paulina Ste. Increased facilities backed by merit and honest dealing resulted in a rapidly developing trade which to-day places the business at the head of its kind. The company then realized that there Was the same opportunity in the piano business. Their first production was the Conover, which is too well known to reqvire special mention here. The Kingsbury piano followed until to-day the fi cto -y is the largest of the kind in .Jr': r M- K#' „ ' { t y ?TO§ #OfM with a productive capacity of 86,000 instruments a year--18,000 pianos and 18,000 organs. These figures are doubly significant lii the first place, they' show what a tremendous development Chicago and the territory tributary to it has made in order to support so great an enterprise. Bear in mind that it is lees than a dozen years ago when Chicago first made any claims to be a center of the piano manufacturing industry. 'The appearance of the first piano was not followed by any remarkable progress in this branch of industry. The growth was slow but sure, and the wonderful expansion has come within the last few years. The other significance of the fig ures lies in the story that they .tell of the growth of the Chicago Cottage Organ Co. This is one of the institu tions of the city that has a remarkable history. As a "piano manufacturing concern it. is one of the infant indus tries, while as an organ manufacturing concern it is a number of years older. From a modest beginning in a tew years has advanced to a place in the front rank of the great producing establish ment of the West. Its influence on the trade of which it is a member is recog nized and felt from ocean to ocean, and its energy and enterprise kre comment- el upon as particularly the American spirit, which ought'to be emulated by others. ' But there is a reason for this sub stantial prosperity and power, as there is a reason for every other condition in this world. The men at the head of the company 's affairs, and who guide its destinies, are men of brains and action. They know what ought to be done in or der to place them in a o o m m a nd- ing position, and having the intelli gence to do that,, they h a v e a l s o the energy to carry out their plans. T h e r e a r e few corpor ations in the U n i t e d States that have made p r o g r e s s that the Chi :s~3'" cago Cottage Organ Co. have made. It is not only because the golden opportunity came to them, as it sometimes or another comes to us all, but that they had the wisdom and determination ifeceesary to make it bear golden fruit. And we may add here that this strong and ambitious cor poration is yet in its teens. It will be a greater factor in < a few years in the piano and organ trade of the nation, great as it is * to-day, simply because there are at the head of it men who are not satisfied with accomplishing ordi nary things, but who are ever pushing forward with irresistible force to the attainment of more potent result. A piano every five minutes! A piano and an organ every 10 min utes! Let us do some figuring to ptove the accuracy of th»5 ajbove statement. There are 800 working days in the year. The capacity of the Chicago Cottage Organ Co. 's factory, and it will be used to the utmost degree, is 86,000^ instruments annually, divided equally between pianos and oi^MW- ^That gives & daily capacity of 120 instruments. Does it not? The working day is 10 hours; therefore the hourly production is 12 in struments. There are 60 minutes in the hour Then is ^$t the output a piano and an organ--two instruments--every 10 minutes, or one instrument of either kind every five minutes. Figures never lie, and here is Abun dant proof of the statement. About a year ago President H. C. Cable of the Chicago Cottage Organ Co. said that at the end of a twelve-montb his company would be making anc marketing something like 20,000 piahos- a year- It seems to us, judging by tht light of recent information, that Presi dent Cable knew what he was talking about at the time. There is no doub. about that.--From the Indicator. Milo Howe, west side, is the agent, and will be pleased to give any infor mation you may desire. Library Exhibit at the l'arl* Exposition.
