All of the candidates now in the field, except Mr. Whitte- more, have been announced for months, so that none can justly lay claim to being late in entering the arena. The contest from now on will be spirited and good-natured. The primaries, can- cuflses, will pretty generally be held during the coming week. Dorr and Marengo are. the only two towns where a fight is being put up for the local delegation. In Dorr the con test has been slightly simplified bjf the withdrawal from the race of Geo. Eckert, candidate for sheriff, who J eaves the race so far as the town of Dorr in concerned, Dorr still has three candi dates, E. C. Jewett lor treasurer and O. H. Gillmore and D. T. Smiley for county judge. ~ Mr. Jewett is conceded the delegation by consent of the judi cial candidates and they will then go before the people of the town for an endorsement as to which will have^ the Dorr delegation. The caucus there ^rill be held on the afternoon of the 22d. At Marengo the contest is between E. D. Shurtleff and Chas. Whittemore, both being aspirants for a seat in the general assembly. The battje there is being waged with the vigor so char acteristic of the town and the outcome 11 virtually settle who will represent McHenry county in the next general assembly. Something: that Will do Ton Good. We know of no way in which we can be of more service to our readers than to tell them of something that will be of real good to them. For this reason we want to acquaint them with what we consider one of the very beet remed ies on the market for coughs, colds, and that alarming complaint, croup. We refer to Chamberlain's Cough Remedy We have used it with such good results in our family so long that it has become a household necessity. By its prompt use we haven't any doubt but that it has time and again prevented croup The testimony is given upon our own experience, and we suggest that our readers, especially those who have small children, always keep it in their homes as a safeguard against croup.-- Camden, (S. There is a pretty story in connection with the series of articles which Helen Keller, the wonderful blind girl, has written for The Ladies' Home Journal, telling about her own life from infancy to the present day. She always has Shrunk from the publicity whieh fol lows successful literary work, and it was with great difficulty that she was persuaded to take up the task of pre paring her autobiography. She had, however, set her heart on owning an island in Halifax harbor for a summer home, and in a spirit of fun the editor of The Journal offered to buy it for her, or to provide the means to buy it. When the work of writing appeared especially irksome Miss Keller was re minded of her desire to beoome a land holder, and it spurred her on. Just before Chrsstmas she completed the firit chapter of her marvelous story and on Christmas morning she received from her publishers a check for a good rotrad Bum. Her delight may be im agined, for this was the first money of any account which Bhe had ever earned. "It is a fairy tale come true," she said, Whether she will reatly carry out her plan to bay the island remains to be seen. Biloxi, Miss , Feb. 12, MR SCHOONMAKER: Dear Sir:--No doubt, while you are enjoying the snow, you can imagine that at so little distance the temperature is far different, yet even in the*5 Sunny South the tiionth of February furnishes days that chill, fully equal to zero weather in the North. Biloxi still has charms, and even greater ones, after visiting New Orleans, the most noted of southern cities in this localility. Of course one must attend the wonderful Mardi Grae which consists of a series of a week's festivities and terminating just before Ash Wednesday. Thou sands of money is expended in making ready for this fete as many excursion rates are offered as inducements. The city is over crowded with an outside populace and its very meagre accommo dations for some, makes it almost an impossibility to entertain in a manner befitting a large city or the. century in which we live. Owing to good for tune we previously had secured a place to view the wonderful crowd and the two parades on Mardi Gras day. This of all days i s given to fun and general amusement. Thousands of maskers representing every nation and oondition, but particularly the colored, in its full and truest meaning. The crowd was certainly an orderly one. One can not describe the floats and give them justice. Twenty in numoer, different for each of the four parades. Rex or King of the carnival is represented by some noted gentleman who furnishes much towards the expenses of same, whose identity is a secret until his introduc tion to the city. All are dressed in beautiful costumes, the flaming torches at night add much to the beauty and brilliancy. As to the city of New Or leans, will visit it again and give better description. Monday we took a drive to Beauvoir, the home of Jefferson Davis. The man sion is in a fairly good state of preserv ation. On a payment of a fee we were allowed to visit the grounds and were taken through the houses. Many pieces of furniture atill remain to prove the once lovely home of luxury and honor. Two buildings near by, namely, guest cottage and library, the latter of espec ial interest, as here Miss Winnie passed most of her time in her private studies, and library sketches from her brush tell of her ability as an artist. The drive to Beauvoir was interesting, a distance of four and one half miles along the beach, hugh pines in the back ground at whose base the palmetto waved a welcome. We find the people of the South cor- teous and kind, ready to lend a helping hand and plenty of time for service. We send greetings to friends while we are enjoying fresh vegetables, fish and oysters, bracing atmosphere, social gatherings about a huge grate fire at evening, yet find solace that our abid ing place is northern Illinois. T EMMA G. PHILLIPS. The Last Heard of It. "My little boy took the croap one night and soon grew so bad you could hear him breathe all over the house,' says F. D. Reynolds, Mansfield, Q. "We feared he would die, but a few doses of One Minuta Cough Cure, quiok ly relieved him and he went to sleep. That's the last we heard of the croup Now isn't a cough cure line that valu able?" One Minute Cough Cure is ab solutely safe and acts immediately. For coughs, colds, croup, grip, bronchi tis and all other throat and lung troubles it is a certain enre. Very pleasant to take.
