Chapel I |cr % -- O >$* WEEKLY CROP BULLETIN. Copious KaJns Reported In All Parts of the State. i i ! 1 i ! I i 5 U. S. Department of Agriculture, Climate and Crop Bulletin ot the Weather Bureau, Illinois section, for the week ending May 5. Both temperature and rainfall condi tions have been very favorable for the growth of vegetation during the past week. The weather has generally been abnormally warm and good rains have fallen at various times. The rains have, however, generally occurred in the form of sbowers and, although ample over most of the state for the present needs of vegetation, in a few localities these showers have been very light, and rain is still badly needed. As a result of the favorable conditions vegetation has made rapid growth during the week, and the agricultural situation is much more favorable than at the end of the previous week. As a rule the week has been favorable for farm work, though in many localities it has been hindered by heavy rains, which have left the soil too wet to be worked. In many localities chinch bugs are report to be becoming numerous. The condition have been very favorable for wheat, aud there has been a decided improvement in the crop during the week. Rye is doing finely, and in many localities it is beginning to head. In a few localities oats are a thin stand, but generally the crop has im proved greatly during the week and is now in a very promising condition. The preparation of corn ground has pro gressed fairly well, and a great deal of corn has been planted. In many places early corn is now up and looking well. In a few localities alfalfa has been sown and is coming up to a good stand. The peach prospects, except in a few locali ties in the southern part of the state, are poor. In many localities small fruits, especially blackberries, are not promis ing. The prospects for other fruits, ie generally good, though in a few local ities it is believed apples, will not be a full crop. Early potatoes are generally up, and both potatoes and gardens are growing nicely. &.ike a Drowning Man. "Five years ago a disease the doctors called dyspepsia took such hold on me that I could scarcely go," writes Geo. S. Marsh, well-known attorney of Nocona, Tex. "I took quantities of pepsin and other medicines but nothing helped me. As a drowning man grabs at a straw I grabbed at KodoL I felt an improve ment at once and and after a few bottles am sound and. well." Eodol is the only preparation which exactly reproduces the natural digestive juices and conse quently is the only one which digests any good food and cures any form of stomach trouble. In this part of the state Nature has donned he* most beautiful garb, being resplendent in all the decorations of her spring-time glory. The sweet perfumes of the apple and cherry blossoms fill the atmosphere, the meadows and woodlands are being covered with the pretty carpet of wild flowers. Grains of every kind, pastures and the foliage on the trees never appeared better at this time of the year. Th6 summer resort hotels have opened earlier than usual and are enjoying a good run of business. The cottagers come out from the cities with smiles of satisfaction upon their faces and find that the country folks are just as happy, if not more so. Strange, isn't it. that despite all that Nature has done for the people, they will possess that tired feeUng. ? Don't Start Wrong. Don't start the summer with a linger ing cough or cold. We all know what a "summer cold" is.( It's the hardest kind to cure. Often it "hangs on" through the entire season. Take it in hand right now. A few doses of One Minute Cough Cure will set you right. Sure cure for coughs, colds, croup, grip, bronchitis, all throat and lung troubles. Absolutely safe. Acts at once. Chil dren like it. Reveals a Great Secret. It is often asked how such startling cures, that puzzle the best physicians, are effected by Dr. King's New Discov ery for consumption. Here's the secret. It cuts out the phlegm and germ-infect ed mucus, and lets the life-giving oxy gen enrich and vitalize the blood. It heals the inflamed, cough-worn throat and lungs. Hard colds and stubborn coughs soon yield to Dr. King's New Discovery, the most infallible remedy for all Throat and Lung diseases. Guar anteed bottles 50c and $1.00. Trial bot tles free at Julia A. Story's, A Good Gaeiier. An elderly woman with an impede ment in her speech had troubles of her own at the corner of Twelfth aud Walnut streets the other day. As each car came out Walnut street she would stop It and say to the conductor, "Dud- dud-dud-does th-tliis kuk-kuk-ear gug- gug-go"-- At this juncture, and some times before? the conductor would Im patiently exclaim, "No; take the next car." Then he would pull the strap, and the car would go ahead, leaving the woman at the crossing. There are five different lines passing out Walnut street at this point, and if the woman could read the signs she disregarded them. Finally a conductor more considerate than the others help ed her aboard and allowed her to ex plain afterward. After three blocks bad been traversed be found that she wanted to go to Darby, and his was a Darby car. When she learned this, she beamed her joy. "Yuh-yuh-young man," she said, "yuh-yuh-you're a gug-gug- good gug-gug-gug-guesser." -- Philadel phia Record. Are you thinking of pointing ? Re member the old reliable Alston Paint. G. W. Besley. CASTOR IA For Infants and Children. The Kind You Have Always Bought Dr. Straub and Family are Now Doml died In Cuba. Dr. Jacob Straub and family arrived in Cuta about April 15, and are now located in the new colony at Columbia, twenty-five miles off Nuvetas, on Sabi nal Bay, where the Cuban Colonization Company have bought 4,000 a^res, and are disposing of the land in town lots to purchasers who propose making a home on the island. Dr. Pierce, of Hoopeston, 111., is the president of the company, and G. W. Spiker, of Cleveland, vice- president. The Straub contingent consists of Dr. and Mrs. Straub, their son, Byron, and two daughters, Miss Carrie and Mrs. Gertrude Hall, recently married, and the new son-in-law. With the Straub party goes Mr. Ykema and family, of Rosedale, and two young men. Two families from Woodlawn are already on the ground. There are about 150 colonists thus far located. There is a fair sprinkling of Universal- ists among the number, in. addition to the Straubs. Union religious services are now held in the colony, but ulti mately Columbia will have regular Universalist services. A church lot, 100x125 feet, is already secured, and Dr. Straub will pioneer the movement for the Universalist Church in Cuba and preach as he can find place and hearing. \ Whooping Cough. A. woman who has had experience with this disease, tells how to prevent any dangerous consequences from it. She says: Our three children took whooping cough last summer, our baby boy being only three months old, and owing to our giving them Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, they lost none of their plumpness and came out in much better health than other children whose parents did not use this remedy. Our oldest little girl would call lustily for cough &yrup between whoops*--Jessie Pinkey Hall, Springville, Ala, This remedy is for sale by all druggists. ' Getting Even. In the crowd that filled a Mulberry •treet auction room were two Italians who watched the Bale with Interest and enjoyed the badinage for which the auctioneer is noted. One of the Ital ians bid on some household article, and it was instantly accepted. "What's the name?" asked the auc tioneer as he opened the salesbook. "Pietro Dionozella," answered the buyer. "Oh, that's too much! I'll put down 'Peanuts, 50 cents.' You're oh," said the auctioneer as he rattled off the next article. The other Italian bid enough to secure the article, and his name was requested. "Patricka O'Sullivana," quickly an swered the Italian. "Well," mused the auctioneer, "that's a good old name for a dago. Come, that's not yours, though." "You beta it isa nota mine," was the quick reply, "but ita is agooda as Pea- nuta You maka de fun witha 'taliano name; I maka fun wida Irish."--N ark Call.
