J. WALSH. WEEKLY CROP BULLETIN, r;' (Tailed A(rivalt*MkI , Report *or the Week KnilluKM^ It. There was a gradual increment of mean temperature during the week, from unseasonably cool the first part, to summer-like conditions the latter part. The conditions have been very favorable for the prosecution of farm work. Wheat is showing further deteriora tion and but few correspondents report a promising condition. Rain is needed, and with unseasonably cool weather, the first part of the week, growth was seriously retarded. Many fields are losing color, and the crop looks yellow. Some localities are infested with Hes sian flies and chinch bugs. Oats are not in a promising condition. Sown mostly under adverse circum stances with regard to weather and condition of soil, germination was re tarded or arrested, and the crop, in most instances, is showing an uneyen stand. The ground is breaking hard and cloddy in the central and the southern district, and consdierable difficulty is encountered in properly preparing the soil for the planting of corn. Plowing continues in active progress. Planting is well under way, especially in the central and the southern districts. Meadows and : pastures have made but little improvement during the week. Previous reports with regard to in jury to fruits from frost on the 1st, ap pear to be confirmed, in most instances, but many orchards will bear a de creased yield. Fruit in the northern district, on account of undeveloped stage at time of occurrence of freeze, is probably in a better condition than in the southern districts. Strawberries and grapes were probably more serious ly damaged than th$ other fruits. ^ GREATLY ALARMED wmmm By a Persistent Cough, bat Permanently Cared by'Cliamberlnln's Cough Remecy. Mr. H. P. The McHenry high school commence ment, exercises will be held at Stoffel's hall on Thursday evening, June 4. An excellent program, which is being pre pared, will be published later. C. E. Wm. Stoffel, who has been traveling for the Osborn Harvester Co., was last week appointed general agent for the territory which he has been covering as expert and salesman. Mr. Stoffel is thoroughly posted in the business and will make the company a valuable agent. Our warning regarding cyclists "scorching" on the sidewalks has caused no great reform. Not long since a little girl on the west side was knocked down by a thoughtless rider. If those kind of wheelmen or boys have no thoughts of others, perhaps the police will take a hand in the game. The Melbonrn Show which exhibited here last Friday draw out a fair sized audience. It was a good, clean show and all present seemed satisfied. If a brand of soap runs along month after month, showing healthy and per manent growth in the number of friends won, it will be generally admitted that it possesses unusual merit. If you call at Evanson's store this week Saturday you may have a fine gold plated sash pin for 10c and at the same time be sure and look over the most complete line of summer merchan dise in the town and always at abso lutely correct prices based on business principles. The shoes, summer dress goods, straw goods, underwear, in fact, anything needed, are here in plenty. Economical cash buyers shonld investi gate. One of our liverymen is wearing a smile. He has cause for it. A few days ago a couple of young ladies hired a horse to drive into the country. The liveryman told them that the horse would be all right if they kept the rein away from his tail. On their return they were asked by the liveryman if they had any trouble. "Oh. no," said one, "there was one little shower but we had an umbrella so that not a drop touched the horse's tail." What do you think of that? One needs only to look through the stores in other villages the size of Mc- Hen- y and larger, to fully realize that our merchants have the largest and most complete stocks of summer goods. This season it seems that they have made greater efforts than ever before to attract the trade from the surrounding country. If persons can not find what they want in McHenry it is because they have not tried to find it.
