Dee McClure. Mc Clure was sent to the penitentiary for life for the murder of Dee's little brother, and tbe^ second indictment was returned to *secure further pun ishment if he should be pardoned for the first crime. The Carmelite convent at San Jnan, P. R., was abandoned after being oc cupied 300 years. e fifteen veiled nuns were transported secretly by steamer to the convent, of San Ger man, in the southwest p^rt of Porto Rico. The change secures better quarters for the nuns. Many of their relatives gathered at the pier and hysterical scenes were witnessed. Mrs. Pauline'Hopkins, who was Bhot at Quincy, 111., Thursday night, is dead of the wound. John Pleasants, a negro, is in the county Jail, charged with the killing. Pleasants has waived examination on the charge of assault to kill Mrs. Hopkins' husband. Pleas ants alleges he had an altercation with Hopkins on the street and that when Hopkins started to draw a revolver from his pocket he began shooting, firing two shots. The collapse of an embankment near Cordova derailed a train. Four teen persons were killed and many in jured. James L. Blair and his wife have left St. Louis and gone to Florida. W. J. White, a Cleveland, O., mil lionaire, was fined for docking his horses' tails. The receiver of the Princeton, Wis., State bank has been discharged and resumption ordered. Lewis Andros has arrived at San Bernardino, Cal., with his daughter, kidnaped from Chicago. Katherine Parks, Jessie McClellan. Gertrude McClellan, Ida Deckard and Floyd Decker were arrested at Sulli van, Ind., for participating in duck ing Miss Sinclair, their teacher, in a pond. They gave bond and will be tried in January. Miss Sinclair is oonflned to her bed with pneumonia. Miss Rose Leo of Cross Village, Mich., was found dead from exposure near the home of her parents. Miss Leo stepped out of her home after supper. Her body was found in the morning in a snowdrift. It is thought she was drugged or knocked insensi ble by one of the woodsmen, who are numerous in that vicinity. Federal Judge Jackson at Charles ton, W. Va., has decided that John Laing and Stewart Hunt were acting as federal officers when they shot John Harless, leader of the striking miners, last winter, and therefore are not amenable to the state courts. Powell Clayton, United States am bassador to Mexico, reported to Act ing Secretary of State Loomis the con ditions in Mexico as he left them. The ambassador says that the relations be* tween the United States and Mexico never were more harmonious than at present and he attributes this in large part to the personality of President Diaz. The latter continues to enjoy phenomenal health for a man of his ye'ars. The latest reports at Shanghai es timate that the cotton crop will be 70 per cent of the average. Max Kronfeld, the New York insur ance adjuster who made a sensation al confession of dishonest methods em ployed by public insurance adjusters, was sentenced to three years in state's prison for the presentation of a false claim to an Insurance company. A verdict of $7,943 was returned against Alfred R. Goslin and Robert A. Ammon of Miller syndicate notori ety. The trial of another suit insti tuted by Finley Barrell & Co. of Chi cago to recover $11,399 was begun. Robert A. Ammon, Miller's counsel, was disbarred. The Canadian department of justice wires to Vancouver that unless Ernest Cashel, the escaped murderer, is re captured before Dec. 15, the date set for his execution, he cannot be subse quently banged, as he will be dead in law. The chief justice is asked to re prieve Cashel for four weeks so that another date may be set. Reports to Cardinal Gibbons at Bal timore indicate that the total of col lections at Roman Catholic churches throughout the country for the benefit of the Catholic university at Washing ton will reach $100,000. In a fire which partially destroyed the home of George Truilinger at Ne braska City, Neb., Mrs. Truilinger and her infant were fatally burned. The woman attempted to start a fire with kerosene, which exploded. The British cruiser Flora, which crashed into the rocks at Village point recently, was floated, the vessel hav ing meanwhile been lightened until she was a mere shell. Abbott of New Hampshire, a distant relative, has filed notice of contest of the will of Gordon McKay of Newport, R. I., who bequeathed sev eral thousand dollars to Harvard Uni versity. in sinking an artesian well on a ranch six miles west of Cheyenne, Wyo., the drill at a depth of 265 feet penetrated a lake or stream and a column of water six inches in diameter spouted out to a height of forty feet. Soundings failed to find bottom. The flow is so^ great that it is estimated to be more than ample to supply the en tire needs of the city of Cheyenne. Senator Quarles introduced a bill to further define the duties and powers of the interstate commerce commission. London cable: Queen Alexandra narrowly escaped burning to death in a fire in her apartments at Sandrin^ ham heuse, early in the morning. ThO floor collapsed only ai moment after her majesty, suddenly awakened by her maid of honor, fled from the apar^ ment, clad only in a dressing gown. The bed on which she had been asledp' fell into the flames. The blaze was started by defective insulation of an electric light wlrey which set fire to a beam beneath the floor of the queen's apartment. Maid of Honor (« Heroine. The Hon. She was awakened] at 5 o'clock In the morning by the* smoke which filled her bedroom. Shfr' realized that the first thing to h» done was to arouse the queen. Running up the stairs Miss Knollysi entered her majesty's room, and ing the queen from a sound sleep toRl her of the discovery of the fire. The queen and Miss Knollys, donning dressing gowns, left the royal bedroom with all speed and a moment later the floor of the room fell in. The whole household at Sandring* ham was quickly aroused. Fortunately there is an excellent household fire brigade, and within a few momenta of the alarm the members of the bri gade had been summoned and were en* gaged in extinguishing the fire. Fire in Two Rooms. j The work was supervised by Sir Dlghton Probyn, the queen's secre-j tary, while her majesty and Mlssl Knollys remained about for some tim« until it was apparent that the flames] had been suppressed. The fire waai confined to the two bedrooms, and thef damage is estimated at only a few hun-! dred pounds, caused largely by water.' King Edward, who is attending a! shooting party at Elvedon hall, Suffolk,' was apprised of the news at an early; hour, and later a special messengeirf was sent by the queen to reassure hUr majesty. REAR ADMIRAL GHERARDI DIES Retired Naval Officer Expires at Hie Home in Stratford, Conn. Rear Admiral Bancroft Gherardl (re tired) died at his residence in Strat ford, Conn., Dec. 10. He was born in> Jackson, La., Nov. 10, 1832, entered the navy from Massachusetts as mid shipman in 1846 and served on the Ohio of the Pacific squadron until 1850, entering the naval academy in 185& and at the beginning of the civil war was on the Lancaster of the Pacific squadron. He was made lieutenant commander in 1S62 and^took part in the engagement with^Fort Macon in- that year. In 1863-4, he successfully commanded the gunboat Chocorna andt the steamer Port Royal of the west gulf blockading squadron. In the lat ter vessel he took part In the battle' of Mobile bay and distinguished him self for coolness and courage. He was promoted to commander In 1866, to captain in 1874 and to commodore in 1884, and in 18S5 served on the board of examiners for promotion.
