Sec. Treas. OBAS. D. BCHOONMAKEB, Editor. Office In Bank Building. Telephone, No. 272. TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION: One year H-V) 81 x months, 75cts. Three months. 40 cts. Thursday, June 30, 1904. /I WITH this nnmber The Plaindealer fittters upon its thirtieth year. We start (the new volume with .no apologies and with jnst one promise for the future. We promise to fight, scratch, pull hair •nd turn the world upside down, if need be, for the benefit of McHenry in busi ness, moral and social advancement and to give our readers the best news ser vice possible. Can more be expected V Apologies are not necessary, for The Plaihdealer has done its best in the past year. That the efforts of the manage ment have been appreciated is evidenced by the ever increasing business. A large number of new names have been added to tibe mailing list during the past twelve months, and there is scarcely a first class business honse in the village that does not use the advertising col umns. The'very fact that the business men of the city have faith in The Plain- dealer as an advertising medium is suf ficient evidence of the paper's prosper ity. And it is another conclusive fact that this confidence has been established IV the response from the large number of bona fide subscribers who read the aicely displayed ads. . THE republican, democratic and pro hibition parties in their recent 'State conventions in Illinois all unqualified ly endorsed in their platforms the Con stitutional Amendment passed by the last legislature and which will be voted on at the general election in November. The amendment empowers the legislat ure to provide a new charter for Chica go, which city is universally conceded to be seriously hampered by its present charter restrictions. All of the plat forms mentioned urged the voters to cast their ballots for the amendment. In relieving Chicago it is believed the measure will work to the benefit of the %hdle state. w i" IP Aii Orphan prflnt-d. The word "orphan" occurred in the Jhinday school lesson. Miss Ida V. Stamps asked if any of the little boys in the class knew what an orphan was. There was no response. Thinking to help the little fellows to search out the right answer, Miss Stamps, said,-- "Why, children, I'm an orphan; now, 't yon tell me what an orphan is?" Up went the hand of a little boy. ' , "All right, Johnnie, " said the teach er, "you may tell us what an orphan is." ','An orphan," replied the little fel- 3f*pr, without the slightest hint of a smile and with deep earnestness, --- "an orphan is a young lady what wants to get married and can't."- Silas Xavier Floyd, in Jnly Lippincott's. Frisby and family. Jan., Robert and Miss Mary Castello of Elgin are spending a few weeks of their vacation with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. P. Walsh. H. Berkircher and Mrs. Chas. The same day Mr. and Mrs. Cohan arrived at Green cottage, where they expect to spend the season. Chas. is well known in this vi cinity, having made a host of friends the seasons he has spent here. Congrat ulations. In one of the most exciting games ever played on the local diamond, the Emerald Park base ball team last Sun day defeated the Elgin Crescents by a score of 10 to 9. Both teams put up a fine game, the fielding being almost per fect. The batting honors of the after noon belon ? to Martin Knox, he getting four hits. The Elgin boys are a gentle manly lot and know a thing or two about the national game. We hope to meet again before the boys leave us. IiiterentiiiK to AnttimH Sufferer*.
