How Hint Why Temp*r«n»» Work Can b«" Suo^esKfolly Done In McHenry. We find in Joshua 1:1-9 the command (*od gave to Joshua as he was ahont to take possession of the promised land: "Be strong and of good courage. Only be thou strong and very courageous that thou mayest observe to do accord ing to the law. Have I not commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thon discour aged; for the Lord thy God iR with thee whithersoever thou goest." This is the promise God gives to His people. We may live in a temperance town if we will be strong and very courageous, obeying the law of God. God is with us, He will go us through every diffi culty and His mighty power can over throw every obstacle if we will but trust and obey Him. Can we not do this, as Christian citizens? Let us fol low the Israelites to the fall of Jericho. Probably there were those who said, "Of what use to march around the walls? We cannot destroy the city that way. How foolish to think we can overthrow that strong city, by just inarching around the walls on the out side without even blowing the tram pet to let them know we are coining. " But God had commanded Joshua to do it and the rest followed the leader, and on the seventh da^, just as they completed the seventh march, and blew the trum pet, the walls fell down. The march ing did not do it, blowing the trumpet did not do it, but God did it, through the faith and obedience of the people. There is a strong wall of intemperance around our town, but God the Father can cause this wall to fall, if we as Christian people do our part, small though it may be. Next we will look at Gideon'8 army. God said his army was too large; they would think the power was in them instead of the All- powerful. Gideon was directed to let all those who were at all afraid to with draw. Twenty-two thousand with drew, ten thousand remained; still too large. They were led to a stream of water to drink. Those who took the most comfortable way of kneeling down and drinking all they Wanted were not wanted in the arihy, but those who did not take time to satisfy themselves, but hurried down, grabbed a handful of water and went on were chosen for the battle. Next is the wall Nehemiah built. Each man was directed^ to build next to hiB own house. Half of the peo pie were to build and the other half to watch the enemy. Those at work held weapons in one ^and and worked with the other. Sanbaljat and his people con trived every way to discourage Nehe miah: he even tried to work him into a plan of deceit that they inigl^t destroy the city'after the wall was built. But Nehemiah Would pay no attention to them. We have a wall of righteousness to build around our town. Our enemy, the liquor traffic, will contrive every means to discourage us, but if we keep at work day and night wif;h the tools of prayer, loving kindness in one hand, and the weapons of love, faith and hope in the other, we Bhall succeed in build ing our wall of righteousness, purity and temperance. Nichols, a merchant and postmaster at Vernon, Conn., makes the following statement: "A* little child of Michael Strauss was recently in great pain from a burn on the hand, and as cold applications only increased the inflammation, Mr. Strauss came to me for something to btop the little one's pain. From the many liniments I carry in stock, I advised him to use Chamber lain's Pain Balm, and the first applica tion drew out the inflammation and gave immediate relief. 1 have used this liniment myself and recommend it very often for cuts, burns, strains and lame back, and have never known, it to disappoint." Don't forget the "waatad'ooinnm! The Chicago Record-Herald has con ceived the unique idea of assigning a page of its Sunday edition to the public for the free discussion of important questions of the day. Under the head "The Battle Ground of Modern Thought" an opportunity is offered to the publio for the sane discussion of all problems engaging the attention of the American people. Writers of ability present their vie$s on subjects not gen erally treated in the daily press, and Rucord-Herald readers are invited to j join the debate. The fairest, most force ful and original contributions are pub lished. The following are a few of the subjects which have been discussed since this department was first established: "Is Blacklisting Within the Law?" "Trusts and the Proper Way to Regu late Them." ""Great Peril That Besets Pugan China.*' "Liquor Trade and Its Evil Consequences." "Are Free Books Wanted in Public Schools?" "Inhu manity to Animals." "New Struggles for the Negro." The Record-Herald disclaims any responsiblities for the dogmas upheld, the theories advanced or the panaceas advocated. It reserves the right only to preserve order, to keep out personalities and rancor and to see that good temper and candor .dbjftipgter- ize the discussions. , Healthy Mother*. • " Mothers snould always keep in good bodily health. They owe it to their children. Yet it is no unusual sight to see a mother, with babe in arms, cough ing violently and exhibiting all the symp toms of a consumptive tendency. And ^vby should this dangerous condition ex ist, dangerous alike to mother and child, when Dr. Boshee's German Syrup would put a stop to it at once? No mother should be without this old and tried remedy in the house--Tor its timely use will promptly cure any lung, throat or bronchial, trouble in herself or her chil dren.
