Hood- She also moved its adoption. Whereas, a sentiment for more rigid enforcement of law is on the increase in many parts of onr country, and a grow­ ing demand is being made by the people to those in authority thav better mnnici pal conditions shall be granted; and Whereas, all forces that tend to lower the moral tone of our cities are danger ous and against the desires and demand R of thousands of citizens; and Whereas, the saloon is the most de strnctive foe of good citizenship and law enforcement, we. the women of the W O. T. U. of Cook county, unalterably op posed to the liquor traffic, urge upon the mayor of Chicago more rigid en forcement of the law, so that stronger and better conditions may develop in our municipal government We plead for the better protection ot many young meh and women who are going ,-to our great city in order to Secure better busi­ ness and educational advantages, wl< thus become a part of our citizenship; for the sake of the children who are a part of our great commonwealth, that they be protected and guarded from the evils of the liquor traffic, and for thou­ sands of our citizens who desire to have safer paths made for those who are tempted and who fall. We therefore urge that the mayor of the city of Chicago shall enforce the present law upon our statute books re­ quiring the saloon to be closed on Sun­ day. We believe such enforcement is being demanded by a great majority of our citizens and which puts our great city, of which we are so proud, in the front of amovement which is standing for its best inteiests. It was unanimously carried. An en feagement had been made two weeks before for the mayor to receive a com mittee, and in reply to a telephone mes­ sage he said he was expecting to receive the ladies at 4 o'clock, whereupon the chair announced the committee might consist of all those who were willing to go. Arriving at the city hall the ladies- were at once ushered into the large pri vate office of Mayor Dunne, completely filling the room. The mayor was very courteous and gave a respectful hearing. The county president introduced the ladies and explained they had come from the all-day self denial meeting where prayers had been offered for officials, lo cal, state and national, and that the wo men knew his reported position in re gard to Sunday closing; but had com* hoping he might be induced to change his position and do the right thing am) consider his official oath of vastly great er importance than his anti-election promise. They had come to appeal t< him on behalf of the women and chil dren, the innocent helpless victims oi the liquor traffic, who had a right to be protected as well as the saloon and it* frequenters. The mayor then explained that he would stand by his anti-election promise and not change his position. The W. C. T.
