"Prom my experience ft* a teacher and from observation in general, I must con demn the cigaret as one of the worst of evils. It (1) poiapriH fb« body, (3) weak ens the vital powers, (8> "deBtroys the in tellectual faculties, (4) unmans tbe will power and (5) results in loss of self res pect If this were all. the evil wonld end with the individual. So far it only pats a man's better self in obeyance The worst (if indeed there may be worse) is yet to come. Then (1) the vicious tendencies develop, (8) the animal pro pensities become the marked character istic and (8) results in the victim becom ing either a knave, a dissolute or both. The more force there is in the character originally, the more positive the evil re salts. Like every question of reform this is one of education. "--Mrs, C. M. Suringle. •' WHAT DOES IT. Several miHion pounds pf glyceripe are consumed annually by the manufac ture of cigarets. The glycerine is nsed to keep the tobacco in a moist condition.. When glycerine is burned the tempera ture becomes sufficient to convert it into acrolein gas. The dry. hawking cough of the ciearet smoker and the condition of the mucous membrane of the throat called "smoker's throat" is the result of this irritant gas which is inhaled in the smoke.' In some cases the moderate use of such smoke results in a pleasant stimulation of the membranes but long, continued use brings irritation, inflam mation and eventually nlceration.--A physician's opinion. # Well, well, well, hear* us yell! is the enthusiastic call of the boys of Fort Collins, Colorado. Why? Because of the splendid anti-cigaret work accom plished--700 boys and girls and twenty- tive adults enrolled, Tbe Junior Anti Cigaret League of Wheeling. West Virginia, has sixty-five members and has pledged 600 names throughout the state. The league's weekly program consists of debates, readings and music, all bearing on the evil which they are helping'to stamp oat of existence. "I do not believe there is an agency more destructive of soul, 'mind and body or more subversive of good morals tban the cigaret. Tbe fight against the'ci- garet is a fight for civilization.-6r. Frank W. Gensalus/ How does it happen that a fresh, sweet girl, jnoving in *her own atmos phere which resembles the blended breath of violets .md roses, endures the presence of stale cigaret smoke that, lin gers perpetually about the "fiend*' whose very breath bears the odor of the jaice of tobacco? THAT SETTLED IT. A nice-looking yonng man stepped in to this office this morning and asked for a job. We were very much in need of a man and thoughtourselveslncky indeed. Before he had been talking two minutes he took from his pocket a sack of tobac co and some papers and began to roll a cigaret in a way which showed that he was no new hand at the business. That settled it with ns. When we have to hire cigaret fiends to do onr work we won't have it done.*--Mankato (Kansas) Advertiser. 'Whether tobacco is smoked or chew ed it has an extremely harmful effect upon men who are engaged in severe physical exertion and not least so when the supply of food is not abundant. To bacco has not only an injurious influence upon digestion bnt it lessens the strength of the body and reduces capacity for en durance and tenacity of purpose. Tak ing smoke into the bronchial tubes where pure air is required to organize the blood creates nervous weakness and leaves the victim unprotected against any malady to which he may be exposed. I see dishonor, disappointment and dis grace ahead of every boy or man who habitually smokes cigarets. "--Elbert Hubbard. Neither President Roosevelt nor Vice- President Fairbanks use tobacco, a co incidence which somewhat discredits the assertion that smoking is becoming almost universal. It also suggests that the social smoke is not absolutely essen tial to "getting along" in the world. <*. B. Barhann Tentifles after Poor Team. G. B. Burhans of Carlisle Center, N Y., writes: "About four years ago I wrote you, stating that I had been en tirely cured of a severe kidney trouble by taking less, than two bottles of Fol ey's Kidney Cure. It entirely stopped the brick dust sediment and symptoms of kidney disease disappeared. I am glad to state that I have never had a re turn of any of these symptoms during tbe four years that have elapsed and I am evidently cured to stay cured, and heartily recommend Foley's Kidney Cure to anyone suffering from kidney or bladder trouble."
