Scott's Emulsion -•'ST P '»*. *rT*> m i aitoa.--fop WHY A PLEDGE AGAINST CIDEB. [Sallie B. Hoskins.] D^. Woods, in the "United States Dispensary," says: "Alcohol is the in toxicating ingredient In all spirituous liquors, including under this hea<l all wines, porter, ale, beer, cider, and ev ery other liquid which has undergone vinous fermentation " Dr. Hayes, a noted chemist of Massa chusetst, says that "the juice of perfect ly sound apples begins to ferment with in twenty-four hours after it is express ed: and that the juice of apples that are more or less decayed (as cider apples usually are) has ttegun to ferment even before it runs from the press--the bend an the cider in the tub being proof of the presence of alcobol." He further adds that' 'ten glaeses of cider are equal to one of ram." Brandee's celebrated "table showing the proportions of alcohol in distilled and fermented liquors" agrees with "Johnston's Chemistry, of Common Life," that fermented cider contains an iverage of from five to ten per cent', alcohol, and a greater per cent than ioes wine, beer, porter, or ale." Our first reason, then, for inserting "any kind of cider" in onr pledge, is because fermented eider, contains alco hol. and alcohol is an intoxicant, nerve poison, and so injurious to the nervous system, and a creator of nerv ous diseases. The fact that cider fer ments much sooner than most people imagine, cannot be denied; and hence no person who has taken a pledge against all intoxicating drinks is safe in drinking any kind of cider. Moreover, we sign this pledge from principle, and principle is always accompanied by self- denial, to the extent that we mnst avoid even the appearance of evil. Second. Sweet cider creates an ap petite for hard cider, an appetite which always calls for alcoholics. I believe I may safely say that all confirmed sweet cider drinkers like it best when just beginning to "sparkle" and "move it self aright in the cup." In other words, when it begins to form alcohol. Third. Because cider is the snare in which Satan catches and holds the chil dren.nntil they become slaves to alco hol. Cider-drinking parents are the stumbling blocks over which their chil- lren often fall into intemperance The cider mill has justly been called the training school of the distillery. Fonrth. Because all anti-temperance men and women always condemn all cider drinkers who claim to be temper ance workers or advocates. Fifth. Because reformed drunkards dare not use it. Sixth. Because in the New England and Middle states, especially in Penn sylvania and Rhode Island, where the products of whole orchards are manu factured into cider, and where the cider pitcher has taken the place of the water pitcher, there are more drunken women than are to be fonnd elsewhere in the United States. Seventh. Because cider drinkers are never successful temperance workers The call of their appetites for alcoho. prevents them from becoming activ< tnd earnest, and there is no room in onr ranks for idlers. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, good ness, faith, meekness, temperance: 4gainst such there is no law. Accord ing to Bible law, when one law it broken, all are broken; and so when a person is lacking in temperance, all the fruit of the spirit is at least very im perfect. I dare say that cider, in its imagined weakness, has become one of the strongest barriers in the way of temperance reform. Eighth. Because cider is Satan's bait with which he catches and holds, at least for a time, weak-minded, would- oe temperance people. Satan is more iubtle than any of his snbjects, and he knows that people who drink cider will not binder the spread of intemperance, bnt rather enconrage it by their failure to fight. There is no half-way ground in this or any other branch ot church work. He that is not for is against the temperance reform--at least in prac tice, if not in principle. For instance, if„a man says he is for temperance and votes for licensing the traffic in alcohol ic drinks, he practices intemperance to juBt that extent; and who is able to measure the consequences? Just so long as Satan can keep the people in this undecided, purgatorial state, just so long will temperance re form lag; and, therefore, we want none in our ranks but such a* cap say, with Paul, "If meat maketh my brother to offend, I will eat no meat while the world standeth." If drinking any kind of cider creates an appetite for alcohoh if cider is a snare to the innocent and a temptation to the weak; if it hinders temperance reform; if it is the weak at m of intemperance with which Satan is trying to confound the strong arm 'of justice and righteousness; if by its use we may influence a weak brother or sister to take the first steps toward in ebriety, we willingly, yea, gladly, pledge ourselves to drink no cider while the world standeth. !?*: Copyright Chaa. Now is a good time to practice an<t this meet will give onr boys Bome ideas for June 8, when all the schools of the county will come together for the finals for '06.
