PRESS DEPARTMENT [The Plaindeaier does not hold itself respon sible for the opinions expressed in this col umn.--Kd.1 "STOP SMOKING."--THE WAY T0STOP SMOKING. Various devtoee have been proposed for inducing boys to leave off the smok ing of cigarets: - Clubs, the members of which are pledged not to smoke them: school prizes for those whojjo Out smoke, chewing guui warranted to destroy the desire for the cigaret: even laws against the smoking and selling of cigarets-- all these have testified to the effort on the part of parents and teachers to re duce the evil effects of smoking when practiced by young boys. None of these devices succeeds so well as they ought to succeed. The boys' club, the school prize, and the state law reach a certain number of offenders, but the worst cases remain and go on destroying them and corrupting others. The truth probably is that the Old- fashioned appeal to the will of the boy himself is the only efficient cure of the cigaret habit. He must be told plainly that he is sacrificing his health, hiB brain and his future to the bad habit. The facts are clear and forcible enough to convince his reason if he will once listen to them. Then must follow the plain bold statement: "Nobody can help you but yourself. It is doubtful if you have even now enough will left to stop smoking. If you havon't enough to day you will have lees next week and still lees next month. Unless you break off the habit you are in danger of be coming a burden to everybody--especi ally to your friends--to yourself most of alL If yon want to stop smoking, the way to do it is to stop smoking!" Many a boy who would sneer at milder methods will rise in response to this heroic one. The brutal truth car ries a weight far beyond that of the comfortable half truths with which we often try to rouse a sleeping conscience. All substitutes for conscience and will are doomed to failure. The boy who cannot kill off a bad habit must live with it nntil it kills him. OUR RALLY SONG. Yes, we'll rally round the flag, boys. We'll rally once again. Shouting the fatal biow to smoking. And although we may be young. We shall very soon be men. Shouting the fatal blow to smoking. CHORDS. The A. C. L. forever, hurray, boys, hurray With the cigaret we've finished, Forever and for aye; Yes, we'll rally round the flag, boys. We'll rally not in vain, Shouting the fatal blow to smoking. Yea, we'll rally round the Mag, boys, With loyal hearts and true, Shooting the fatal blow to smoking. Day by day we older grow, And the pledge we will renew. Shouting the fatal blow to smoking. WHY HE OPPOSES THE CIGARET. James Case beer of Blue Springs, Neb., father of the anti-cigaret law which waa passed by the last legislature of Nebras ka, was asked why he introduced such bill. He replied: "I have In my employ a young man with a wife and family. He has great ability, but is a perfect slave to the cig aret habit. I have tried repeatedly to have him save his money and purchase a home for his family. He leaves the office with a solemn promise to do so and to let cigarets alone, but the next time he comes to work I see him with a cigaret in his mouth. It was for this and other reasons that I introduced the bill." The Anti-cigaret league at Rhodes' Military academy at Kingston, N. C., absolutely will not tolerate the use of cigarets in the school buildings or on the grounds. At a recent league meet ing in the court house, addressee were given by prominent citizens, "all of whom," says the local press, "paid their respects in no uncertain tana." s "Just a little poison.-- No, I thank you sir, For my mother trusts me, And I'll stand by her. Do you think I'd give her A moment's grief or pain By using what would surely Harm my busy hraln?" MI will not smoke, I will notchev, 1 will not drink or swear. When such temptations come to me, To yield I will not dare." The sale of the cigaret is proscribed by ordinance in Rockford, Illinois. The policemen of Fort Worth, Tax., are barred from the use of cigarets. The cigaret has been expelled from the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute. Kidney trouble preys upon the mind, dis courages and lessens ambition; beauty, vigor and cheerfulness soon disappear when the kid neys are out of order or diseased. Kidney trouble has become so prevalent that it is not uncommon for a child to be born afflicted with weak kid neys. If the child urin- ates too often, if the urine scalds the flesh or if, when the child retches an .age when it should be able to control the passage, it is yet afflicted with bed-we?ting* depend upon it. the cause of the difficulty is kidney trouble, and the first step should be towards the treatment of these important organs. This unpleasant trouble is due to a diseased condition of the kidneys and bladder and not to a habit as most people suppose. Women ps well as men are made mis erable with kidney and bladder trouble, and both need the same great remedy. The mild and the immediate effect of Swamp-Root is soon realized. When Maxim, the famous gun invent or, placed his gun before a committee of judges, he stated its carrying power to be much below what he felt sure the gun would accomplish. The result of the trial was therefore a great surprise, instead of disappointment. It is the same with the manufacturers of Cham berlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. They do not publicly boast of all this remedy will accomplish, but prefer to let the users make the state ments.
