Natural gas bubbling out of the water on the piece of lancl known as Buffalo park about eight miles north of Elgin has attracted the attention of people who have paised the place in boats, or camped on the grounds, says the Elgin Press. In the south end of the property a little cove is filled with the gas, which comes up in huge bubbles as if the wa­ ter were boiling. The property is own­ ed by Charles Smith of St. Charles % street, who camps there with his fami­ ly every bummer. A son of Mr. Smith discovered that the bubbles were caused by gas last year, when he made a gasometer to catch some of the stuff. His apparatus was an old tub with a gas pipe protrud­ ing thru the center. This he filled with water and turned upside down until the gas had forced the water out of the tub ami-taken its place. Then he re­ moved the plug from the end of the gas pipe, applied a match and had a good flame for about two hours. While it is not believed that there is enough gas about the place to be of any great mercantile value, still there is considerable, because it bubbles up in the mud all over the water for a consid­ erable distance. Many people who have noticed the disturbance in the water have wondered over the cause, but have not guessed that it was natural gas. It is probable that some camping party, of which a great number frequent the place, will next year rig up some kind of a gasometer which will catch the gas automatically, thuf affording heat with which to cook their meals.
