March came in like a lamb, and if the old saying holds good the going out of the month will be very much lionish. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Lerche of Waukegan, Saturday. Feb. 19, 1910, a son. Mrs.. Lercke was formerly Miss Gertrude Zens of McHenry. Quite a number of Chiesgoans who own summer homes along the river and lakes are beginning to make weekly, trips to this place--ft sure sign of spring. Ben Adams, who at one time conduct ed a meat market in the building now owned and occupied by N. J. Justen on the West Side, is again engaged in a similar business in Chicago, his market being located on the West Side. 3$ We understand that a Chicago man is to build a fine new landing on the West shore of Fox river just.. opposite N. E. Barbian's residence. Besides the land ing he will also construct a neat little waiting station. A bright idea. The Ladies' Afternoon club met at the home of Mrs. R. G. Chamberlin yester day (Wednesday) afternoon.' A, very pleasant time was had and the after noon's honors went to Mrs. C. L. Page. Progressive cinch was played and re freshments served. By the last bill presented to as, wte note that the electric light company now styles itself as the North Shore Electric. Just what we predicted that the outcome would be. The change, we understand, took place some time last month. From good autharity we learn that a general shake-up* is about to take place at the local plant. Eight additional men from this place started work at the Terra Cotta factory last Monday morning. There are now over twenty men from this place em ployed in that institution. T„o see a gang of twenty working men boarding the early morning train every day and again returning on the ft:40 in the even ing is a sigh! that has never before been witnessed here. The prospects are that this number will be doubled ere long. Saved a Soldier's Life. Facing death from shot and shell in the civil war was more agreeable to J. A. Stone, of Kemp, Tex., than facing it from what doctors said was consump tion. "I contracted a stubborn cold," he writes, "that developed a cough, that stnek to me in spite of all remedies for years. My weight ran down to 130 pounds. Then I began to use Dr. King's New Discovery, which completely cured me. I now weigh 178 pounds." For Coughs, Colds, La Grippe, Asthma, Hemorrhage, Hoarseness, Croup, Whooping Cough and lung trouble, it's supreme. 50c, $1.00. Trial bottle free. Guaranteed by N. H. Petesch and F. Maequelet. The following from Tuesday's Rockford Register Gazette explains the nature of the illness: The reward of f 100 offered by the gas company forinformatioi^ leading to the arrest afrd conviction of /the party or parties' guilty of robbing various gas meters about town-will be claimed by Max *%4ewaterf who oondpets a floral establishment at the corner of Charles street and Tenth. Mr. Sadewater did even more than provide information. He looked the gailty one in his floral establishment and sat on him until the police arrived and took the intruder into custody. Mrs. Sadewater noticed a stranger go into the basement of her home Monday about 8 o'clock. Going to the head of the stairs she heard the intruder monkey,- ing with the gas meter and a moment later the visitor came out of the baser ment as unconcerned as tho he was a regular caller. ' * . "What are yon doing here?'5 demand ed Mrs. Sadewater. "Oh, I'm the gas man," the fellow replied in a nonchalant m&*u>er. "If yon are the gas man, where is your badge?" insisted Mrs. Sadewater. "Ob, I do not need any badge, as I am the regul&r meter inspector," was the reply of the visitor as he' walked away. Mrs. Sadewater hurried to the green house and notified her husband, pointing out the intruder, who was making his way toward Third avenue, and Mr. Sadewater gave chase. ^ Overtaking the fellow, the florist de manded an explanation and when the other reiterated the "regular inspector" story and could not produce a badge, Sadewater took him in tow, leading hiin back to the greenhouse. Locking the door he summoned the police by phone and Officer Erickson soon put in an appearance. The fellow proved to be Fred Thnrl well, a former employe of the gas com pany. Of late Thurlwell has been em ployed as a driver for Swift & Co. He is a married man and resides at 1610 Fifth avenue. On his arrival at the station and be ing ushered into the presence of Chief Bargreq, Thurlwell admitted his guilt. He said he secured only a single quarter at the Sadewater home, but he bad $28 50 in quarters in his pockets, the proceeds of other raids. He also had $41 in other money on his person. The chief thinks that at least $800 of the stolen quarters were garnered by Thnrlwell and the gas company figures that it has lost something like $1,500 the past two or three years from this source. A year ago several thousand dollars were expended in the installa tion of a new meter device, but Thurl well 's knowledge of the working of meters aided him in beating the game notwithstanding. " Thurlwell has been under suspicion for some time by employes of the gas company, as certain circumstances pointed strongly in hia direction as the thief, but they were unable to fasten the crime upon him until the quick action of Florist Sadewater this morn- ing. The company has had a standing offer of a reward of $25 for the information sectored today, and last week increased the reward to an even hundred, in the hope of its having effect, as the thefts were growing more numerous and the $25 offe^ failedW bring results; Thurlwell was given a preliminary examination in police court this morn ing and was held to the grand jury in bonds of $1,000. He iB the local agent for Swift & Co., and was working the get-rich-quick game as a side line. How Good News Spreads. "SI 70 years old and travel most of the time," writes B. F.
