I hereby announce myself a candi date for the office of highway com missioner for the town of McHenry, subject to the decision of the legal voters at the coming town caucus "and will be thankful for the support of my friends. JOHN BOYLE. 37-3t TOWN CAUCUS. Notice is hereby given that the an nual township caucus of the Republi can legal voters of the township of Mc Henry will be held in the village hall in the village of McHenry on Satur day, March 18. for the purpose of plac ing in nomination the various town officers to be elected at the coining April elections, to-wit: One super visor and one commissioner of high ways. Polls will be open from one o'clock p. m. until five o'clock p. m. 37-3t TOWNSHIP COMMITTEE. QUARTER OF A CENTURY. ITEMS CLIPPED FROM PLAINDEALER OF TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. Allen Walsh has been appointed postmaster at West McHenry. vice (' V. Stevens. David Parker will build an addition and otherwise improve his residence the coming summer. About six inches of snow fell here on Saturday night and Sunday. That ground bog is invisible. The McHenry military band went to Richmond on Saturday evening last and played for the skating rink at that place. At the meeting of the village board on Monday evening two night watches were appointed, one for the West Side and one for the East Side. A good ides. Captain Hill is busy at work putting the steamers "Mary Griswold" and "Mamie" in order for the spring open ing1 and will have them in better shape than ever before. We learn that a new wagon maker took up his residence with Theodore Bickler on Sunday last. He weighed nine pounds. Theodore is as well as could be expected. A new postoffice, called Terra Cotta, has been established at the station by that name between McHenry and Nun- da. Joseph Buss, the station agent, has been appointed postmaster! We learn that Geo. Smith, the junior member of the firm of Smith, Son & Co., will build a fine new residence on the lot just west of his father's. It is a fine location, and we have no doubt he will put up a house that will be an honor to the village. Grand reception and band social at Riverside hall, McHenry, 111., Thurs day evening, March 4, given by the young ladies of McHenry to the Mili tary band. To consist of overtures by the band, songs, solos, duets and quar tets, violin, cornet, flute and piano •olos, duets, etc. Drawing of a $30 quilt given by the young ladies of the T. O. C. club of McHenry. To con clude with a social and basket supper. Our village had a narrow escape from fire during the high wind one day last week. A pail of varnish was accidentally tipped over on the stove in Bishop's wagon factory and it was only by extraordinary efforts that it was extinguished before any damage was done. With a southwest wind blowing at the time, there is no know ing where it would have stopped had it once got under head way. It makes us tremble to think of "what might have been." Happening into the jewelry store of O. W. Owen a few days since, we found him at work on a watch that was in deed a "'relic of ye olden times." It was a regular old English bull's eye and was the property of Mr. Mead of Lake county, and is said by him to be over 200 years old. It had been laid by as worn out, but Mr. Owen has over hauled it, put it in order and it is now running all right and good for another hundred years. The works, case and in fact the entire watch is a rare curi osity. itESLY fEKSQML ITEMS HAS MILLIONS OF FRIENDS. Call and select your Easter suit early at M Jf. Walsh's, The papal decree issued last fall, fixing the age fttr the reception of the first holy communion at seven years, is to go into effect this Easter season. It was read in the churches of Rock- ford diocese, Sunday: Heretofore the minimum age for the receiving of holy communion has been twelve years. The decree sets forth, among other reasons for the change to seven years, that the average child at tains the age of reason before he is twelve and henceforth should not be deprived of the sacraments, the holiest of means for the preservation of inno cence. ,f Copies of the decree have been placed in the hands of the plergy of the diocese and lit. Rev. P. J. Mul- doon has sent with each copy a letter of instmiction, The bishop says: "I am sending you a copy of the de cree on the age of those to be admitted to receive first holy communion. You will please read it to your congrega tion auu jii raiige to put it into effect during the approaching paschal sea son. "Great care and vigilance will be necessary on the i>art of the pastor, confessor and parents to instruct prop erly the little ones for their first com munion and succeeding communions. •Both for first confession and com munion a complete and perfect knowl edge of Christian doctrine is not neces sary. The child, however, will be obliged to learn the whole catechism according to its ability," says the de cree. "And again they (who have the care of the children) should bear in mind their most important duty by which they are obliged to have the children present at the public instruc tions in catechism, otherwise they n^nSl^^ipply religious instruction in some other way. From all this it follows that now more than ever par ents are solemnly bound to send their children to parochial schools where t hey exist, and to the catechism classes when there are no parochial schools. "It may be well to draw the atten= tion of parents to their grave obliga tions of assisting the pastor in the in struction of the children. Unfortun ately. today, far too many parents take no interest in the religious instruction of their children, but leave it all to priest and sister. This i& a serious mistake. Parents should teach their children their prayers, hear the les sons in catechism and provide their children with good Catholic papers and books. After you have read this de cree to your congregation please oc cupy a few Sundays during Lent ex plaining it." ENKB&LI) PARK. The Northern Life of Illinois. A FIERCE NIGHT ALARM is the hoarse, startling cough of a child suddenly attacked by croup Often it aroused Lewis Chamblin of Manchester, O., [R. R. No. 2] for their four children were greatly subject to croup. "Sometimes in severe attacks," he wrote, "we were afraid they would die, but since we proved what a certain remedy, Dr. King's New Disoovery, is, we have no fear. We rely on it for croup and for coughs, colds or any throat or lung trouble." So do thou sands of others. So may you.
