An un familiar driver was undoubtedly the cause for the poor showing made. "' frank McKee, owned by Frank Jus ts*, looks good and with an experi enced driver behind him we feel quite certain that he would have made Azie Hall go some to cop first money. 5 All told, the opening matinee proved 10success and the promoters of the sp6rt here are looking forward to some classy events in McHenry this summer. ' . •"SHOULD; ARREST SPEEDERS : : *V fw, tine For Police Officers to Put a Stop to Reckless Driving fek- ®fc5' that the summer season has again set in and in view of the fact that with it comes the heavy automo bile traffic thru this village, the police officers should be instructed to watcft the drivers of cars and make arrests whenever necessary. Ordinances regulating the automo bile traffic thru the village were passed by our village board some two or more years ago, but up to the present time the law has been en forced just about as carelessly as numerous other laws in McHenry dur ing the past twenty-five years or more. Last year a faint effort was made . to enforce the automobile law in Mc Henry and, \5rhile a few arrests were made and fines collected, the village authorities displayed signs of neg ligence. From the lips of the motor cycle cop himfeelf the writer has heard that he was thoroly disgusted with his job for the simple reason that the village board failed to back him up last season. Time and time again he had occasion to make arrests, but for reasons better known to himself h£ failed to do so. Why go to the trouble and expense passing these laws if they are not t» be inforced? This question has been heard time and time again. "While The Plaindealer does not deem it necessary to go to the extra expense of hiring a motorcycle cop to enforce our automobile laws, we do believe that they can and should be enfored by our officers who are now serving the village. It isn't necessary for an officer to mount a motorcycle . and take a risk of inmry or death run ning down law ViolatorsIt isn't even necessary to take a chance of injury by running out into the street after these reckless drivers. An officer can shout the command to stop from any place of safety and the drivers' failure to do so will warrant the use of the ' tJDcer's firearm. While we believe'in strict observ ance of not only our automobile but all other laws as well, we also believe . that the officers should use good judg ment in all cases. We believe that proper warning should be given all drivers. A slight offense of the vil lage ordinance should be met with a stern warning and should the same driver repeat his unlawful act an: ar rest should be made and if fouijid guilty should be fined. j While the minor offenses, such as parking on the wrong side of' the Street, going round our guide posts Ote wrong way, lights, etc., are not as People Who Come and jGo Duriftf a '• - Week - ;:/vV • ' Mr. : liSTl^ldr^ ot Chicago spent Sunday la the guests of McHenry friends. The ceremonies were impressive and beautiful. Early Sunday morning a crew of imen erected a temporary altar on an elevation on the edge of the park. Green stately tamaracks formed the back ground. Artistic hands of the women draped the platform and altaf* most gorgeously with linens and bunt ing, for which they merited rightfully many congratulations. It was a touching spectacle when the aged priest and pioneer of Spring Grove, Rev. Father Duerr, raised the sacred host to bless the great throng which marched so solemnly and orderly to this newly erected shrine. Under the supervision of Carl Stenger, S. H. Freund, H. J. Schaffer and Wm. G. Schreiner the march ' proceeded to Peter J. Doherty's beautiful porch, -Where the second altar had been so tastefully erected and decorated. Mrs Doherty and her assisting friends de serve many compliments for their generous devotion and artistic display. From here the march turned back to St. ftlary's chuch, where the final benediction was given. The canopy bearers were: . Messrs. John Phalin, Math. Blake, Sr., M. Freund and Louis Oertel. Band Concert Tuesday Night The Plaindealer has been requested to announce that the first of the sum mer series of band concerts will take place on the McHenry public school grounds on Tuesday evening of next week, June p. Arrested For Speeding itf, !pt' On Thursday evening last two speed |ffry' §§i^ maniacs, rounding the corner at Fred U Justen's place, were traveling at such • high speed tl>at they were unable to !'%'• stop the auto and crashed into one - side of the Fox river bridge, thus avoiding what might have been a fatal ^ « accident, as Miss Rena Niesen, while being wheeled out, was just crossing f the street and barely escaped being *» run over by the auto. The occupants % of the car were placed under arrest ; and taken before Justice of the Peace Wm. J. Welch, Where the driver, Joseph Cashmere, was given a fine of $25.00 and costs for reckless driving I and his companion, Wm. Aim, $10.00 1 and costs for disorderly conduct. Both men were from Winnetka. I ' - + tr -f ' • conclusion that Tuesday night will be the only night that these concerts can be held. Contributions for these con certs may be left at either one of the banks and the number of concerts to be given depends entirely upon the generosity of our people^ The boys ask but $15 per concert and it is up to our citizens to decide by popular subscription how many open air con cents we are to enjoy during the summer months. Don't forget the opening concert next Tuesday night June 19, . Geo. Walmaley Passed Away The remains of Geo.
