J listen From Cando, North Dakota The following letter, written by Jacob R. Jus ten to his father here, has been handed to us for publication and we believe that its contents will interest many of his friends here. Cando, N. D., April 17, 1918. Dear Father--Received your letter and was glad to hear from you and that you are well. We had an all- night and all-day slow, soaking rain here. Everyone is looking for a big crop. The rain is helping the rye along. There are thousands of acres of rye sowed. I have sowed fifty-four acres, which looks good, and have also ; r , < - j v * v r V r i « ->a * 3 put in ninety acres of wheat, while I. j ^ i have about ?25 acres more to sow* v- • I have it all ready to sow now and a"./; ^ rain or two will give it enough mois-A • „ / S ture to assure a good crop. It doesn't * take long to sow a lot of wheat when" you put in twenty-five acres a da3^.,'^»*> with one drill. ^ 1 ^ We were sorry to hear about the >.£ nice church burning, as you can't find. as nice a church as that everywhere*,' - .jj Our town has a nice church, but not as large as yours. I suppose they f , will rebuild as soon as they get maty ters straightened up frith the insur ance company.' - V. I have traveled considerable in th®?/ {1?^ last seven or eight years and in that'" "" ^ time saw a lot of towns, but they hav«Kv, i ] got to go some to beat McHenry for a t ' j nice, clean town. ^ ̂ Cando is a nicely laid out* placed \^; ^r but it is not kept up like the town of M c H e n r y , t o o m a n y v a c a n t s h a c k s X f ' and old barns that are gradually go-% ing to ruination. There are good * buildings on the main streets. Thera j * are two banks in town, both buildingi, t} being larger than Frett's hutched > ^5* shop. \ They are constructed of- pressed brick and terra cotta. Any one traveling between this; place and McHenry will have to giv^s ,r: the McHenry people credit for hav* ^ f ing' the cleanest town albng the entire t| route.
