Buch Phone 48 McHenry EARLY DATS IN M'HENRH (CONTINUED FBOM LAST WEEK) Nearly one hundred years have passed since the first white settlers arrived here. Animated by the promises of youth and the rich prospects epread out around them they struggled on through storm and tempest and many adversities until the grand, culminating reward is summed up in the achievements of today. Today the screeching of the sand hill crane and other primitive birds is replaced by the whistle of factory sirens and train whistles and the spots where the painted savage, the prowling wolf and the timid deer roamed unmolested are now replaced by cities and villages where dwellings mark the happy homes and the farmers have turned into fields the prairies of grass and flowers. Civilisation has established a permanent residence here and made room for a higher, more perfect development of the vegetable, animal and intellectual kingdom. As we look over the country today, behold how changed! Shanties have given place to spacious dwellings, constructed with all the convenience and elegance of the most approved style of modern architecture. The rude habitations of the past exist only in the memory of the few remaining old settlers as among the things that werV This country with its fertile hills and verdant plains, seems to be the chosen ^spot of all others on this green earth for the highest and most perfect development of human intellect, with a government based upon the principles of equal and exact justice to all mankind, recognizing the principle of human equality before the law, with freedom of thought, freedom of speech and freedom of the press. America is fast advancing the sciences and arts and is today the gutding: star, the light and hope of the world. Our railroads and telegraphs, our steam boats, wireless devices and automobiles with thousands of other wonderful and marvelous inventions are the results of American science and industry and the product of the age in which we live. Glorious prospects are spread out before us for all succeeding generations in the wonderful inventions and improvements of today and the pioneers when called from this world have gone leaving a proud, imperishable record. Probably no part of the country offers more brilliant prospects for the future or satisfying promises for the present than does this prosperous Fox River country. This quiet, gentle stream meanders in leisurely fashion through a verdant landscape, winding through low-lying meadows which are in their turn enclosed by hills as lonely as any sung to fame by English poets. It was a passageway carved out in some remote age by one of the tremendous glaciers that crept down from the arctic regions and left their marks on this northern hemisphere. These scars are evidenced by gravelly morains that crop out of the steep hillsides and by odd heaps of pre-historic debris for which ordinary erosion does not account. In Fox River valley are to be found many prosperous farms with some of the richest soil in the country where the owners, under modern methods, are developing and reaping richer harvests than ever before. From the hilltops and the surrounding farms the eyes rove over a landscape dotted with homes and estates, with cottages by the river's edge, smart motor cars and the beautiful Fox aliv<* with canoes and motor boats. Amid these surroundings McHenry sits on top of the world, where after the shifting tides of migration, it has become one of the most up-to-date cities to be found in the valley. Today at McHenry trains travel back and forth between the world's third largest pity flnri the inviting cottages along the river bank. (TO BE CONTINUED NEXT WEEK) BRDA'S HARDWARE The history of the city of McHenry is drawing to a close and with it the history of the various business houses advertised on this page will be completed, but although completed they will »ot be forgotten. There are bound to be pioneers in every walk of life and business industry and today, as in the days of early history, their activities in building up the community distinguishes them as being among the progressive business firms of this city. They stand squarely for a bigger and better community and as leadprg in a movement for the betterment of our city, the^ deserve your patronage. One of thesfe business firms is the hardware store owned by John F. Brda, situated on Green street, in the business section of McHenry. Mr. Brda and his family came to-this city several years ago and purchased the building on Green street when he opened up a hardware store, which he has continued to enlarge and improve until he has established a reliable and permanent business. He handles all the high grade lines of hardware, paints, oils, sporting goods and household utensils, furnaces, gas stoves and rangfs. Mr. Brda also does all kinds of tin and copper work and installs furnaces and is ready at any time to give an estimate on any work in his line. Not long ago Mr. Brda built a large addition at the rear of his building which gives him a large convenient work room with a basement underneath which extends the full length of the building and affords plenty of room for the storage of his supplies, material and stock. # All work is personally supervised by Mr. Brda, who offers the best in quality, service and prices and invites the public to pay him a visit. -- reading between the lines is THE Organized Dollars" DYNAMIC POWER THAT OPENS THE DOOR OF OPPORTUNITY 'ORGANIZE YOUHS" with an account at this bank STATE BANK OF M'HENRY 'WE'LL CO-OPERATE*'--in theHflirt CITI FALL LEADERS Cannonball Coaster Wagons, roller bearings, rubber tires, disc wheels.
