THE M'HENSY PLAINDEALER, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1929 CITY COUNCIL IN 1 FEBRUARY MEETING OHLY FOUR PRESENT SkNtoral Matters Arc tni •\;4':Meeting Lasts Until After : The Midnight Hour ; regular meeting of the city council was called to order at 8 o'clock Monday night, Feb. 4. Aldermen Doherty, Bonslett, Kreutzer and Stoffel present. Alderman Knox is wintering in the south. The minutes of the last stated meetin? and subsequent meetings were read and approved. The treasurer's report, collectors report and the clerk's report were separately read and approved. The bills were read and ordered paid as OK'd by the finance committee as soon as available funds are received* The assessment roll and the controversy between Aid. Bonslett and the Wells Engineering Co. took up considerable time. Aid. Bonslett has put in a great deal of time in checking the sewer -assesiHaeEt spread and finds that in tfhe main the Wells Engineering Co, has covered the ground very thoroughly. Mr. W«!ls is expected to be in McHenry the latter part of the week, at which time the spread will be corrected and it is to be hoped that next week's Plaindealer will give some interesting facts concerning the spread. There are several water service pipes that are frosen between the main sewer and the basements of the homes and an electrical apparatus for thawing them out has been borrowed from Barrington, but as Barrington also has frozen water pipes the outfit must be returned immediately. As the outfit is considered quite reasonable in cost as compared to the digging up of the pavement for repairs, the boar<) deemed it a wise investment to purchase an outfit. The purchasing committee was to order one the first thing Tuesday morning. The matter of the ornamental light globes at the west side was taken up and Mr. Carey of the Carey Electric Shop was ordered to get the globes at once as the whole system is in danger of being short circuited by water getting into the posts with the globes off. The matter of delinquent water bills was discussed and rather than to start suit the mayor instructed Aid. Bonslett to interview each case and see if the bills could not be collected without shutting the water off. As all available funds are used the city will be Unable to pay the Publiq, Service company for present light bills unless the city can collect what is due it from plumbers' licenses, drug store licenses, gas filling station permits and delinquent water bills. Discuss Parking Questioa The matter of parking of automobiles was taken up and the marshal was instructed to keep the home people parking their cars in regular manner. One point that was brought up is the parking of cars at night on the wrong side of the street with bright deadlights left on. Such offenders are subject to arrest. There are to be "no parking" signs in front of churches, schools and theater as well as a few, fire plugs on the main streets, such as in front of the West McHenry State bank, National Tea company corner, Peter J. Sehaefer's market and other similar owners, who wish to get a refund from the state, together with a little aid from the city board, that the two-day trip to Springfield could be financed for the representative. It was thought that the mayor being better posted on the situation than any other member of the board should be the one to go and he was appointed by the board to represent Mchenry and vicinity at the meeting. The board voted to continue its membership in the Municipal League of Illinois for another year. The bill of the Andersonn egineers was discussed bat no action taken. The matter of the extra lights used by the "Green Street Business Men's association, which were used for extra street illumination during the carnival a few years ago and for which the association agreed to reimburse the city, but never has done so, was thoroughly discussed and Attorney Oowplugs where the public is in the habit lin was instructed to take the matter of parking directly in front of the j up 'with the association. plugs. • ^ matter of the gasoline tax and Ffcett to Springfield !of widening of roads wafc given as flffayor Frett brought up the matter !re»son to have the city attorney draw of sending a representative to attend! an ordinance that no new plats should a meeting of the Municipal League of be accepted within the corporate Illinois Feb. 6 »nd 7 at Springfield, limits with streets less than 66 feet The mayor informed the board that | in width, excepting streets that would he had made several trips to Spring-;be a continuation of streets now in field in behalf of the city and did not use of lesser widths, but in no case see how he could continue otanding ail; no street le?.s than 50 feet wide would the expenses of such trips. He stated b® accepted. to the board that at this meeting of the Municipal League several points of vital interest to the welfare of the citizens of McHenry would be discussed.
