• . . . v , : jlaihdealw, tgrntsDAt STRIP ; It's hard to believe the story they have around town about Herb Freund and his aewly won Rifle Club trophy which, by the way, is the first trophy that Herb has acquired since becoming secretary of that up and going organization. Lacking a suitable place to display that attractive laurel, it is rumored that Herb removed the baby's picture from the piano to make for it. How. about it, Herb? What abotit the America Legion baseball team this year? For the past two seasons McHenry has been right »p in the running for the county championship and the material is at hand to keep them here this year- §o far but little has been heard about the program which is sponsored annually by the American Legion. Let's get busy and get them organized as the diamond will be in shape in aflat the hi gh~schooi ii again Ih fall swing aiid the boys' are At it every moment. The cinder path is in ' the best shape ever though it hasn't settled down to that late season firmness as yet. It is just as well because the boys', legs aren't as hard as they will be later on. McCracken has twenty athletes working put. Most of his material is comparatively green, but la likely to % ' '•" The Aurora race track is big bid for the worrten this year with two ladies' days a week and a new feature in the betting which is termed a daily double. This has always attractive to those of the sex and Aurora is hoping that they can thereby attract enough of them to make it pay. The, oval is reported to be the best in America the new top surface has been which should make the track a popular one for those who believe im- plicitly in «m •*r the The Chicago Brains succeeded in stopping* Johnny Wooden and thereby earned a victory over the Purdue All- .Stars in the big Pro-Amateur tilt lasf Sunday, but the margin of victory was so small that there could be but little distinction made between the two styles of play. The final score was 24-23 with Feed Murphy, former Loyola star, leading the way for the winners. Another battle between the two teams will be fought next Sunday and this may prove to the fans th?.t they can stop Wooden once in awhile, but that it won't be for long. There's just no stopping this Sayler five in the 0!<J Timers' league and they kept up their rampage long enough to take aifbther pot by turning in a neat high series of 2682, with Captain Jim topping them all with 609. It was quite an individual "match he and his opponent, Capt. Bill Bickler, had- Bill turned in 222 the first game to top Jim by two pins and then they both dropped, Bill to 191 and Jim to way down to 166. Bill turned in 195 in his final effort, but Jim rallied to 223 to cop high series and high single game by just that narrowest of margins. Looks like it's ail cut and dried in the league now,"with the Saylers and the Bkklers enjoying comfortable margins. - v » • '<?. " l^ext Tuesday is <?uite a^ftay year's history what with the maries and the opening day of baseball season all coming on same day. The Cubs have selected Charley Root to handle their opening day's pitching assignment, which is in accord with the program for the past four years. Charley always could give those Cincinnati boys a run for their money and that may have had something to do with the assignment, inasmuch as Pat Malone indicated he was ready to go to work by allowing the Pittsburgh Pirates but three hits less than a week before the opening. Washington, as usual, will get off a day ahead of the rest of the pack with President Hoover all practiced up to throw the firitt ball. "Si"" TRACK DRAWS M'HENRY HIGH SCHOOL • r~; , The basketball mentors are willing to undertake drastic measures to place the game back in the place it occupied in the sport world not so many years ago. Stalling is the thing that they ha,ve to combat and their most recent is to place before the rules com- . resolution which will thoroughly do away with it. If the new rule is adopted the team will have to advance across a line drawn parallel to the end lines across the center of the court within ten seconds after becoming into possession of the ball. It will then be allowed to pass back over the line but once t>efore attempting to make a basket or before losing possession of the ball. Another suggestion is that age old problem of the dribble. Meanwell is backing a movement to limit the dribble to one bounce, something that he has been advocating for the last eight years, but has been unable to put across up to,the present time. Eliminating the dribble wouldn't make the game any more popular to most of the fans, but would act in quite a contrary manner. 8AYLERS-BI0KLXRS' \ LEAD OLD TIMERS With but one more week to go the bid Timers' race is just about sewed up and from the looks of things the Sayler and Bickler quintets are going to receive gratis feed at the expense of the Granger and Hughes five. A few weeks ago it looked like Hughes and his bunch were going to be at the guest table, but "Grandpa" just couldn't rally the boys with his old war cry and the lead was lost with a miserable series a week ago. Jim Sayler's crew continued their victorious cruise again this week and piled up a 2,682 count to take, the sweepstakes. Capt. Jim led the assault with 609, but his work was no" more startling than that of Geo. (Alexander) Johnson, who topplH them for a 565 count by turning in a steady assault on the maples. Bickler's five had a big lead piled up during the first two gaines,.but that 966 count of the victors in their last attempt was too much for Bill, who, ly the way, had 608 to come within one pin of high man for the evening. The tune was 21-4 and Oh! what a trimming it was. Everyone on Louis' squad, especially Ray Conwa/, was trying their darndest to prevent the licking, but their efforts produced only pressing and that doesn't get one anywhere, even in volley ball. Even Conway's dramatic gyrations on the floor of the gym proved to be of no avail. While all this -was occupying the main ring of the'circus, Jack Mc- Carroll was leading his team to the high score of the evening by scaring 81 points "out of a possible 84 to creep up within 9 points of second place. Next week another business meeting is to take place on Monday evening with the formation of another, indoor league the chief object of the program. Situ, ated snugly in their new quarters just north of town, Herb and the rest settled down to some real competition,, that is it was real until Herb outdistanced them by some steady shooting in every position. . Jack Smith, the Ringwood sniper, placed second in the event, but fell down before his old nemesis, the standing event, and dropped six points. Sid Frye topped them all in this tough division, but found fiis kneeling style was far below par. The Bank Cap next Tuesday and all the boys will be working hard to get in shape for tbi» feature match of the year. With the indoor season about completed the matches are coming thick and fast. The Fox Valley individual championship match is scheduled for the near future at the Elgin gallery. Fehrnan is the odds on favorite to cop this, but McHenry has several markmen that are capable of taking home second place. Small Bore Trophy Match Freund 99 95 91 76--ill J. A large amount of the material on hand is rather green, but since most everyone has some natural talent in this line, it should be easy to adapt these talents to one or more of the events. Track is one of the best developers of young manhood of any form of competitive exercise and for this reason should provide excellent training for any of those who wish-- to report for football or basketball' next season. Coach McCracken's squad at present consists of Bacon, Walkington, Wilson, C. Peterson, A. Freund, Lockwood, M. Meyers, Wolf, B. Granger, G. Johnson, L. Meyers, Duker, G.
