The Birthday Social, under the aus pices of theJViiling Workers Society, held at the City Hall on Friday evening last, was, as we predicted it would be, one of tlie finest entertainment's ever held in this village. It would be ha^d to estimate the number present, the coming and go ing from half past fivejuntil T-h-g-h-fri TTuotn upstairs and down, being literally packed all the time. The strpper was pronounced by" all as one of the finest they ever sat down to, and there was enough and to spare for even the large crowd in attendance.' The ladies ivho had this important part of the en-, tertainment in charge had done their duty weir™fFnd not a«thing was lacking. A few minutes past eight o'clock the large crowd at the tables adjourned to the upper hall, where the literary pro gramme of the evening was announced, and we must confess our inability to half do this part of the entertainment justice. It was simply'a programme 1 that could not be excelled. Time and space will not permit us to particularize, but can only say from beginning to .end it was one, wood, were the guests of Thos. HAVING become weary of constant dunning with meager results, we shall, on the first week in January, cut from our list all our subscribers who are a year or'more in arrears, and put the ac counts in the hands of an experienced collector, with instructions to employ any effective means to get the money, which, in the aggregate, represents the profits of several years of hard work. We can see no good reason why we shou'd carry from year to year, hun dreds of subscribers who make no pre tense of [laying the arrears we are so justly entitled to.
