Mich., was for many years a,great sufferer with neuralgia of the heart and stomach. She was indeed considered hopelesslv ill. and considerable surprise has resulted V from the lady regaining her health, in little short of a marvelous manner. A re porter of the New' Era who was out for news called on Mrs. Beard, who stated as follows: "1 have been a sufferer from neuralgia of the heart and stomach for many years. Originally brought on by exposure. It is just ten years ago since I experienced the first neuralgic twinges in my head and . stomach, which were so severe that my screams could be heard for several blocks, and morphine was the only thing that would give me any relief. * ' **These attacks usually lasted about two hours and cam®, very frequently. Mor- 4 phine was my only standby, as it was the sale relief against the agony I constantly suffered. 1 had no appetite, I could not walk, and at times my jaws Uecame so firmly set that they could not be opened. The Wild Fig Kills the Tree that Gives It Shelter. But. of all the vegetable inhabitants of the tropical woods the strangest is that one whose seed, it is said, will die if it falls upon the ground, and which only grows when it finds a resting- place on the rock or a fence, or ou an other tree, where there is not a particle of earth or moisture; and in all the West India forest this tree is the great est criminal. It has a long and beauti ful Latin name, which, it might.be sup posed, would have some subduing in fluence upon it, but it does not seem to. This plant Is the wild fig. Let us imagine that some huugry bird, taking in its beak one of these figs, llies to a neighboring tree, and, alight ing ou a lofty branch, cats the fruit. One seed is left. The sun is warm and the air most, find after a while the tiny germ begins to sprout, aud the minute leaves,, breaking their thin shell, shoot upward--tender little iuuocent, putting up its slender arms in a "please-help- me" sort of way: while its spider-like- legs are reaching out to get a firm hold ou its aerial home. The little plant seems so harmless, and the hospitable forest giant caunot know to what a robber and monstcrit lias given a rest ing-place. After a while the fig sends up a stem, and its root, peeping over the edge of the lofty branch, finds the ground eighty or one hundred feet be low. But nature has endowed this sprig with daring, and, nothing daunt ed, the slender thread leaps into the air, and, feeding upon the moisture with which the hot atmosphere is laden, it drops slowly and boldly to the ground tui<J,hcretakes root. As the plant grows, it lete fall other long feeders, one by one. which descend to the earth. Some of the tentacles have by this time found that the tree itself affords an easy descent, and one day a root starts along the "branch, and, reaching the trunk, trips lightly down its spiral stairs, aud thus reaches the soil. Oth ers. finding this way so easy, follow, and so the roots increase in number and size, nourishing their master above. It has now grown in strength and vigor, and, wrapping themselves around the trunk of the tree that sup ports them, the roots strain and press upon it cruelly. 1 tjs a struggle for life, but their forest host is doomed. Slowly and surely they envelop it. The em brace of the fig is death. At last the great tree dies, and little by little, rot- tiug branch by branch, it falls to pieces, and its place is taken by the ogre that has strangled it. The wild fig belongs to the same fam ily as-the banyan. It is found In the East and West Indies and in Australia, aud lias the same destructive habits everywhere. Sometimes it grows to an immense size. The wood is soft, and the natives make bowls, trays aud spoons of it. The fruit is about as large as an apricot.--St. Nicholas. Texas. •In the agricultural line Texas leads all other States in the variety of its products. Cotton, corn and the cereals grow and are raised in every section of the State ami in the central and southern portions sugar cane and sorghum cane are profitably cultivated. On the Gulf coast, two and three crops of vegetables are raised e^cli year. Berries are shipped six weidcs in advance of the home crop in the north. Pears, peaches, plums, oranges, figs, olives and nuts all grow abundautfy and can be marketed from two to three weeks in advance of the California crops. Large quantities of rice are now grown. The proneness of the press to retail personal scandal has suggested a rem iniscence of the times of Louis the Fif teenth, when a member of the noble family of D'Argenson had charge of the police of the kingdom. One day he summoned before him the pamphleteer, Desfontaines, who had divulged to the public an escapade of some one of the name of D'Argenson, The royal official reprimanded Desfontaines severely and menaced him with something a good deal worse if he did not mend his ways or those of his scandal-mongering pen.
