Lee estimates that probably 200,000 of the rural population in the Cuban provinces of Pinar del Rio, Ha vana, M atanzas and Santa Clara have died from starvation. Gen. Lee says: "Four hundred and sixty women and children, thrown on the ground, heaped pell-mell as animals, some in dying con dition, others sick, others dead, without the slightest cleanliness or the least hel[i; not even able to give water to the thirsty; without either religious or social help--all dying wherever chance laid them. 4mong the many deaths we saw there was one impossible to forget. There is still alive the only witness, a young girl of 18, whom we found Seem ingly lifeless on the ground. On her right side was the body of a young mother, cold and rigid, but with her young child, still alive, clinging to her breast. On her left side was the corpse of a dying woman, having in her arms a daughter of 14, crazy with pain, who, after twelve orfourteen days, died in spite of the care she received." Who can inihjudge the rectitude of the iutention of the nation which proposes to put a stop to this wholesale murder by the barbarians of| Spain ? The dogs of war could not be let slip in a more holy cause. Telephone-- office, 66, residence, 69. 36; 1 Seientiflally speaking, this is a stereo- sf-ore; and yet it is very unlike the ordinary instrumentcalied by that name. The stereo scope, heretofore in common use, although a pleasing instrument and givinga "bolid view" as its name indicates, does not (rive a correct perspective, the depth of the view being much exagerated; bu t the new Instrament. which is called the PERSPECTOSCOPE, not only gives the "solid view," but the true perspec tive. r r This 1° no doubt the most brilliant discovery in this line ot optics since Prof. Wheatstone's time, 70 years ago. The inventor of the Per- sbectoscope began investigations and opera, tionsor. the theory of obtaining a perfect per- spective from two reflected images of a'slng!« picture. The Perspectoscopo ts a binocular Instrument which uses in its construction two ground glass lenses and two mirrors of oertect reflectin ' surface, and Is constructed on scientific principals just dicoovered by its inventor, Its use is the same as the orlinary stereo scope, but;*vith the following differences an>1 advantages: 1st. As above noted, it gives a true perspec tive, An you look at a picture through the Perepectnscop* you behold a scene, in every respect precisely llko the one compassed by the camera which took the picture. 2nd* A Perspijctoscope requires but a single picture and that of any size The numerous Kodak pictures and other photographs to be found in almoft any home, and which would be useless with a stereoscope, are already adapted to use with the Perspectoscope. 3d. In viewing the pictures with the Per- spectoscope the eyes assume the natural position, as they look forward in parallel lines: there is, therefore, no pain attending1 the effort, as in the stereoscope, which requires the beholder to cross the vision at a point which, to pome eyes, is unbearable. Everybody that is interested in the Kodak, will w;ant a Perspectoscope. Anybody possessing views taken by a cam- era or other photographic instrument will want a Perspectoscope. We guarantee the article ;to be exactly as we describe it, and if you Ifind it in anywise different, you ran return it within 30aays and the money will be refunded. It is Che°p We sell It to purchasers direct or through an agent, for#2.00, free of express or.other charges, Full particular* In regard to the instrument or its sale will be sent free on application. Drafts, money orders, etc., should bo made payable to the order of Henry H Hill. Remittances in currency will be {at sender's risk. The manufacturers lexpect to sell several million of these tilings, and a good agent would do well to write them for agents terms, SPRING GROVE. Important to Township Assessors The township assessors elected through Illinois recently will hold the office until Jan. 1, 1900, and will make the assess ments for the years 1898 and 1899. Their successors elected i/t April, 1899, will not take their offices until Jan. 1, 1900, nine months after their election, and will hold the same for one year. After this year assessors elected at the April town meetings will take the offices the first of January following and hold them until the first of next January, or until their successors shall be qualified. The law is very akward and inconvenient in this respect, but assessments will after this year be begun on or before April 1, before the annual town meeting, and must be concluded by June L, instead ol July 1, as heretofore. Real estate will be assessed in 1900 and every fourth year hereafter. This is to be known as the general assess ment. Persoual property will be assess ed every year, and improvements, etc., on real estate, if any, on each of the three intervening years. The above facts are due to the new revenue law adopted at the recent special session of the Legislature. JOHN P. SMITH, Watchmaker & Jeweler MoHENRY, ILLINOIS.
