(By Vanesse Sells) Groundhog Day came and went, and While I don't know whether or not any groundhog was foolish enough to climb put of his nice warm hole and look for his shadow, by golly I saw my shadow and I felt that cold wind and I am pretty sure that winter is still here for a little longer. Without being a groundhog, my prophesying is about as scientific as his. Apparently the theory that the groundhog has any effect on the weather is buried in antiquity. I haven't been able to trace it to its origin. B«clp in ancient Grecian times, folks depended upon what certain animals did to forecast the weather. In Germany they watch for a hibernating bear or badger to arise and look for its shadow 6n February 2, or Candlemas, (feast of the purification of the Virgin Mary.) Personally, I can't even trust the weatherman to forecast for me. If he says it is sroing to rain, and I get prepared for it--the sun shines all day. Then, if he says that it will be lovely, sun and a light wind and I believe hitn, and wash--well, you know what--it rains! However, there id one splendid way to forecast Spring. This is my method. Of course you have to have donned your red flannel longies in the full. ("Bugs" Baer suggests that the buttonholes be puttied up, but I believe this unnecessary except for the most delicate. Then, when the longies begin to be just too CHURCH SERVICE8 TWENTY TEARS AGO Mr. and Krs. JTWICE TOLD TALES Itesu of Interest Taken the Files of the Plaindealer of Years Ago Radar Invisible Beam Radar is based upon a beam of invisible short radio waves. These waves can penetrate fog and darkness. When thev strike a solid object, some of them are ' reflected back, like echoes. These reflected rays are converted into visible light rays which form a shadowgraph picture. Submarines, airships and V-bombs are located and brought within range of human vision in this manner. Light, radio, x-rays and radium emanations are all forms of atomic radiations of energy, known, as electro-magnetic waves. They form a spectrum of 60 octaves, of which visible light is only one octave. Radar, using rays below tho j visible light band, thus extends indirectly human vision to a flew set of electro-magnetic waves.* High Priced Stamp The highest price ever paid for a single postage stamp, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica, was roputed to have been more than $43,- 000.
