Paul G. Armstrong, state director of -selective srrvice, has an- ' nounced that 18 and 19 year old ; registrants are still being permitted ! to volunteer for induction through' • selective service. I j "The amendments which Congress; ipassed. Colonel Armstrong said, "do' 'not restrict or prohibit any 18 or 19- year-old registrant from volunteering for induction as was don& , previous to May 15. . - "Selective service will accept volunteers ages 18 through 34 years provided they are physically and mentally acceptable and, if fathers, ' do not have three or more children. "Application for voluntary induction should be made to a registrant's own local board of jurisdiction." i It was announced at the local draft i boards today that young men reachi ing the age of 18 years must still ' register on their eighteenth birthday. Dairy Production payments for milk and butterfat produced during the months of May and June will be higher than originally expected, County AAA chairman Bert Bridges said this week, exceeding1 those ofi last year by 20 cents per hundred weight for whole milk and 5 cants per pound for butterfat. In atfoxdapce with the accepted practftiP • lowering payments during the flush season of production, it was originally announced that rates would be decreased to the level that prevailed during the same period in 1945. Rates have now been revised to accomplish a 15 cent instead of a 35 cent per hundredweight drop on whole milk and of two cents per pound on butterfat rather than the contemplated seven cents. It should be noted, however,, that those rates are .subject to termination. or revision in the event of any authorized increase in the price of milk or butterfat prior to June 30. 1946. This means that the farmer of this area can expect to receive for their May and June production a payment of 45 cents per hundred pounds on whole milk and 15 cents per pound on butterfat. <• ' :: On the Hour H ; ;of ray death, do not weep ;;for me -- Cry not Parted, 1 parted: union and meeting; "are mine in that hour.'--; Old Persian Manuscript." However, that the rabbit isn't the only source of the disease, which is commonly known as "rabbit fever." The wide variety of animal contact® capable of infecting man with the organism which causes tularemia is not appreciated as highly as it should be. Rodents, some birds and even such animals as the dog, cat, coyote, fox, hog and sheep have been found to be sources of the infection. Mexican Border Uprisings In the spring of 1916 Pancho Villa with a small band crossed into New Mexico, and killed a number of Americans. To prevent further outrages President Wilson sent a detachment of the regular army, under the command of General Pershing, to pursue Villa. The troops penetrated 400 miles into Mexico but were unable to capture the bandit. A month after United States troops entered the country, a small force of United States soldiers were attacked and reinforcements were sent to Pershing. In June a battle occurred jyt Carrizal where Pershing's men were ambushed and many of them killed. United States troops remained in Mexico until early in 1917 when gradually they were withdrawn. ling of Leas of Eye Impair! Vision Chief reason most persons in their 40i have impaired vision is the hardening of the lens of the eye, a process which takes place normally in all human eyes, according to the Better Vision institute. This hardening process begins at about the age of 25 years and continues until old age. In adult life the lens of the eye continues to grow by the addition to its outer layers. The center fibers shrink and become dense and hard. Starting with. a central inelastic area the hardening spreads outward and by the time a person reaches 60 the entire lens usually is hard and inelastic. In many persons this hardening is fairly well ad- f vanced in middle age. As the hardening progresses minor errors of refraction may become disturbing. As the eye lens loses its elasticity its ability to change focus for near and far seeing diminishes. besides growing harder the lens of the human eye becomes more yellow and th'is increase in coloration tends to Alter out a greater amount of jthe blue and violet rays in natural and artificial light. Thus, the world of color also changes with advancing age. In youth the lens of the eye is- very flexible. Inverted Camels In 1857, Secretary of'War Jefferson Davis introduced the camel to the United States as an experiment in aiding troops and supply movements across desert stretches of the American Southwest. The beasts were imported from Smyrna to Texas. Inexperienced men made the mistake of loading the camels too heavily. Their feet became cut and bruised. Unable to go on, they were let loose in the desert. Later many were rounded up in Nevada, where they had become a nuisance, and were sold to circuses. Wild camels were seen in Arizona as late as 1920. 2?
