Golf Instructions 'I'WO men, neither of champion- ^ ship class, and wboM knowledge it the rules of golf was no more accurate than their technical knowledge of the various shots, were standing on the first tee of a golf course. Hie first fairway was bordered- on the right by a *ow-of 4ak 6he of the taking a swing, sliced to such an .extant that thp hall struck one 01 the trees fairly, and came bound* ing ha ck over the toe, so that the player in question, without moving from his stance, caught {fee ban In his hand as it was passing. With a bewildered look on his face, he turned to his opponent and adced: "What shall I do now?" His opponent, without studied fffort or inclination to make a Joke, replied: 'Tee it up, hit it again, and then put your hands In your pockets.** am Dorian' DiiuBlMliL British medical mo «• tiMn to call on atom aid for impwtatt new experiments In diagnooing serious diseases. A large atomic pflo at Harwell Research stdtion, Berkshire, will start operating shortly. It win pro* duce enough atomic by-products for Britain'f own immediate needs and a possible surplus tor export to the continent The "atomic doctors" wfll work in close collaboration with the American specialists who already have atomic by-products in use. "The Gleep", a small-scale pile at Harwell, is already "cooking" 160 samples of radio-active chemicals a month--carbon, sodium, potassium, iodine, gold, silver and so on. Increased quantities from the new pile will meet the demands of research workers and doctors all over Britain. These radio-active elements are the trail-blazers of great new discoveries in medical science. When fed into diseased tissues of the human body, they act like radium. They can be traced through the most complicated processes or into the most inaccessible parts of the body. Remarkable results of scientific diagnosis by atom-charged elements have already been had. In cases of grangrene, for instance, surgeons are never sure how far the disease has spread nor how much of the limb ought to be amputated. Radio-active chemicals "light up" the gangrenous tissues and they can operate accurately. Artificial Sahara Desert Increases Life of Powder Skeet and trap-shooters can thank a year-round artificial Sahara desert in an Illinois ammunition plant for the stability of the smokeless ball powder used in their shot shells. This artificial Sahara is a 10-foot high cylinder called a "surveillance chamber" in which powder is prematurely aged under the speedup conditions of a constant 159% degree Fahrenheit temperature. Under normal conditions in temperate and frigid climates powder made by conventional methods retains its full power, or as the experts say, its potential energy, for periods of 20 or more years. Under very high temperatures its life' is shortened and the materials from which it is formed tend to return to their original constituents. Knowing how long powder retains its original stability under the torrid zone temperatures of the surveillance chamber, powder makers can control and extened powder life under average temperature conditions. y Blue geese travel from the coast* al marshes of Louisiana to the James bay region at Canada in al* most a non-stop flight during Mr spring migration. , It.
