Members of the McHenry fire de- Crtment • effected a thrilling rescue it Sunday when they saved a young nan from drowning on Pistakee Bay. The fortunate individual was UHUS Huch, 21, of 2800 Farwell avenue, Chicago, w<hoae (points have a summer home on tne bay. We narrowly escaped death when hie ice boat broke through and he also broke the ice as he started to walk toward shore. The local fire department was called after Carl Kritsch, 57, caretaker of the estate, attempted in vain to rescue him. Huch was »bout 400 feet off snore When his boat went through the ice and he was thrown into the water. He managed to crawl out and started toward shore, but had gone only fifty feet when he broke through again. When he tried to crawl out of the water onto the ice, the ice kept crumbling beneath the weight of his body. Kritsch saw Huch's danger and tried to rescue him, but when he also plunged into the icy water, the McHenry fire department was called. Responding immediately to the summons, Chief Gus Freund, Harold Hobbs, Hkrold Dickow, Dick Miller and Ted Miller used ropes, ladders, skis, snow shoes and a toboggan and then forming a human chain, managed to get the toboggan to Huch. He was pulled to safety a few minutes later. The Chicago man,"an expert swimmer, suffered only from exposure.
